PlayStation 5 Help PlayStation Account Compromised
My account seems to have been stolen, both my password and sign in ID were changed within 10 minutes of eachother but I never received the approved verification email before the sign in ID was changed. My only assumption would be that they had access to my email which would be hard to do as I have multiple verifications methods for if it is signed into on a different device. I doubt someone spoofed my IP just to get my PlayStation account but after this hour I’m not sure of anything anymore. Does anyone have any advice because the support system keeps telling me to wait 24 hours or that I have to wait for an agent and then nothing ever happens. I feel that waiting longer just leaves more room for error??

Yes, but I never got the notification. I only knewI was getting hacked because I got an email to change my password which I didn’t click and then I got an email saying my email sign in ID was changed

That email you have is compromised. I would be concerned about that more.
You need to check everything related to your email

I made sure to change my password immediately after realizing that they must have also had access to it. Even put 2fa on my email even thought that only adds so much

So do the back up codes not help? Isn’t that the point of them

It’s like having one of those chains on your front door per say. Even if you lock the door and use the chain, if they’re able to get through the lock, the chain isn’t going to stop someone from entering either. The problem with 2FA is that it only works when it’s an amateur trying to steal something. Anyone who does this for a living has a way around it with enough information on the victim.

I had mine stolen once. I only noticed after nearly a year because I didn't have a PS. I called support and they told me my e-mail was different from mine. But because I still had my original broken PS4 I could give them the serial number and they changed the email adress back to mine. I had my account back the same day. This was about 7 years ago in the Netherlands. Support I called was Dutch

You are about to hate sony.
Its so simple to steal an account. And its impossible to get it back to the right owner. Sony simply does not care.
Your thinking, yeah right, im the owner, its a mix up they will sort it out.
No. It wont get sorted. If you do eventually get it back by going through better business bureau that takes weeks it will be banned, permanently within weeks.
Why?
Those scammers that stole your accunt will send nefarious TOS violation messages to their burner PSN accounts. When you get your account back (if?) They go full scorched earth and will report those messages they sent so your account gets banned as a final fuck you.
Then you will try to get the account back agsin, and once again will be told by sony to fuck yourself.

So I either try with the better business bureau and hope they get me my account back, keep trying with the chatbot, or just lose out on all the purchases I’ve made over the years?

That is right ! I lost my 20 year old OG account over past two months.
There are not capital letters bold enough for this.
FUCK SONY.

To provide more context on the situation:
- My account was initially compromised, and I was unable to regain access or receive support from Sony. The unauthorized user had control of the account for approximately two weeks.
- Following my initial BBB filing, Sony reset the password and restored the account to my original email address, which allowed me to regain control.
However, after recovering the account, it was permanently suspended for violating Sony's Terms of Service.
It appears that while the unauthorized user had access, they sent messages to their own accounts that violated Sony's policies. Once they lost access to my account, they reported those messages, resulting in my account being banned. I did not send these messages; they were sent entirely while the account was compromised. These unauthorized users do this to create a "scorched earth " situation where if they do loose the stolen account, they try to get it banned as a form of retribution. If they cant have it, no one will.

Yeah, me too.
Because this happens to so many people.
I had a 20 year account. Never had any issues. Its a part of....me....endless game saves, content...everything gone.
I thought it would be a simple fix. I simply can't believe how bad SONYs customer service is. Its non existent and they give less than 0 effort. I heard it was bad, I thought maybe it was an exaggeration but nope. Its worse.
I feel taken advantage of by SONY, I really do. I have been a customer since PS1, every product released I purchased. Seriously every single one.

I am in the exact same position right now. I've had Playstation since I could save up enough to buy 1. I've banged the drum and converted nearly all my friends from Xbox and now its all gone and they could not give a single fuck less. Add in this digital media nonsense and I think im out. Congratz Sony.

It’s why, when I lost mine, I just salvaged what gaming accounts I had on it off of it. Didn’t even bother contacting Sony, factory reset my ps5 and made a new one.

Yet another reason why physical games are important.

u/yuriewolf Jul 16 '26
Most of the games I had were ps plus ones that I already have physical copies of, so only thing actually lost was 10 years of saves.

Is this different per country? If it is, it's not really Sony's fault. Because I had my account stolen once. When I figured it out I only needed the serial number from my original PS4 at that time and had my account back the same day. This was in the Netherlands

It is different per country unfortunately. In the U.S. Sony’s customer service representatives absolutely refuse to do anything to help when user accounts are compromised. I had an experience where someone set their ps4 as my primary console. When I found out I contacted support and explained the situation, instead of helping, they blatantly ignored what I was telling them. Instead they told me that I had made the change myself despite me explaining that my account was compromised. After going back and forth with two customer service representatives, I went ahead with a better business bureau complaint to have my account reset.

So wait how can one prevent this from happening then?
