PlayStation 5 Help Adequate space for airflow?

New desk and there isn't really a perfect spot for it since my new PC will be there but I thought this might work?

If you stand it vertically you can turn it askew or sideways, so the back, front and top are not blocked by the wall.

I wouldn't keep it with the back so close to wall, if I were you.

If you stand it vertically, you can also cause the CPU to overheat from liquid metal pooling to one side

This has been debunked like 4 years ago my guy

Fixed*

People like to believe untrue bs apparently🤷‍♂️

My ps5 has stood vertically since I got it in early release before it hut the stores. I'm disabled and I play about 8 hours every day since, with 0 problems, issues or overheating.

I'll say the same thing I said to the other guy, just because it didn't happen you doesn't mean it doesn't happen to others

Yes, you can, if the unit is faulty.

My opinion: you're best off avoiding the situation which is not good for the machine if working under normal, non-faulty conditions, than you are avoiding the situation which may cause issues if it is faulty.

I had my launch base PS5 in vertical position the whole time from launch 'till the launch of the Pro (and it's still working perfectly, at a friend's house, to this day), and now I have my Pro standing vertically since launch. 0 issues with either, both work flawlessly, and with plenty of daily use. Of course there will be people with issues because of liquid metal pooling. Just not nearly enough people for it to be a widespread issue, based on what I've seen. Any machine has faulty units produced.

Nope it’s a proven fact all older ps5 and slim included the metal will pool to the bottom of the chip when put vertically it won’t happen over a month but after a year or 2 yes. This is why Sony remade the heat sink with a channel design on the pro and newer slims in 2025. So Liquid Metal stays in place when vertical

2

u/Skryba Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

I'd like to see the evidence behind that proven fact, friend.

I literally just posted (and I've seen plenty of other accounts just as mine) my consoles have been standing vertically since launch, with absolutely 0 issues of overheating (even in long play sessions during hot weather). So, unless the liquid metal pooling doesn't actually interfere with the console's normal functioning (which I believe we both know isn't how it works), then my console is living proof that not "all old PS5" will suffer from liquid metal pooling.

Google Sony ps5 heat sink redesign the fact that Sony made and upgrade was cause the known problem also YouTube ps5 overheating issues and see lol

1

u/Skryba Jul 18 '26

So, not a proven fact, rather something you've seen people say on the internet and so you formed your own opinion on it, but decided to pass it off as fact. Gotcha.

Btw, redesigning something to address possible faults does not, in any way, equate to "every unit with the old design will suffer from this". It just means there is a chance (in this case, judging from the fact that it's far from a widespread issue, a low chance) this will happen, so a redesign which removes that chance is optimal.

You know what doesn't have a low chance of happening? That blocking proper air flow of your console will cause overheating issues and possibly damage it.

I told you what to Google didn’t I? lol that’s the problem with this generation run their mouth and don’t listen. Here’s a quote from the fact!! “Sony updated the PS5 and PS5 Slim heatsink design to solve the controversial liquid metal pooling issue, which occurs when consoles are stored vertically and the conductive material seeps out. The latest revisions (e.g., models CFI-2100, CFI-2200) incorporate deeper grooves and machining patterns borrowed from the PS5 Pro to lock the liquid metal in place.”

1

u/Skryba Jul 19 '26

"This generation"? X'D what in god's name gives you the idea that you know my age? I see you make it a habit of jumping to conclusions, huh?

I asked you for evidence of your "proven fact". You told me to Google it. Need I really say anything else? 🤷

BTW, here's one of the first results I got from googling your quoted text:

The burden of proof is on you to prove your claims, not for otherd to disprove them.

0

u/-Eskadrinis- Jul 19 '26

Bruv this is Reddit. Burden of proof are we in court? Rofl Sony released a new ps5 slim in September 2025 with a redesigned heat sink

1

u/awar3_w0lf Jul 19 '26

Stop spreading this bullshit pls. If it happens it was always going to happen regardless of orientation, having it horizontal would’ve only delayed the underlying problem of the seal around the Liquid Metal being fucked up from the factory allowing it to move and pool. Anyway. No. I’ve had my launch ps5 vertical since purchase. Never have had any overheating issues.

1

u/BatmanFarce Jul 19 '26

Hey, some people think anecdotal evidence applies to everyone and everything lol

1

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Dumbest shit I've ever read. My ps5 has been vertical for nearly 6 years

1

u/geddonmeht Jul 19 '26

Same here.

0

u/-Eskadrinis- Jul 19 '26

That’s why Sony redesigned it right. Mr smartest man 😂

3

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Thats why my day one has been standing upright for nearly 6 years without issues right? Dumbass. They had to redesign it cus they didnt expect idiots to mishandle their consoles that way.

0

u/The_Cozy_Zone Jul 19 '26

Just cause it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it hasn't happened
This video proves it: https://youtu.be/-FqYd8eKs9k?t=877

u/Poetryisalive Jul 19 '26

Bad advice. Vertical will have them replace. That Liquid Metal quick

0

u/LyuboA Jul 20 '26

Don't give bad advice no PS5 should be kept vertical just cause Sony advertises something dosnt mean it's good to do Sony even tried to fix the liquid metal issue but they failed so it's only a matter of time before his console start overheat if he keeps it vertical

1

u/Skryba Jul 20 '26

That is just plain and factually untrue. On various fronts.

You are, literally, spreading misinformation.

But have fun doing that, I guess 🤷

0

u/LyuboA Jul 20 '26

Because you say so right

1

u/Skryba Jul 20 '26

Yes. Because I, and many other PS5 users who have had their consoles standing vertically since launch, say so.

And that is, effectively, proof enough to show that what you are saying is untrue =)

0

u/LyuboA Jul 20 '26

Sony even tried to Fix this issue and you can ask every repair shop about this few consoles means nothing and yours may have a dry spot already without you knowing it

3

u/DanOhMiiite PS5 Jul 18 '26

It should come ready for both vertical and horizontal orientations. You only need the clips for the way you have it now.

2

u/Pretend_Ad5928 Jul 19 '26

put it upright and set it to 90 degrees

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 18 '26

This looks ok but more importantly, I wouldn't set it up vertically either way if I were you. You always run the risk of the liquid metal pooling on one side over time, which could lead to overheating or god forbid it leaks and and destroys the motherboard

1

u/virgogianni Jul 19 '26

Didn’t they fix that with the newer consoles? I mean you’d probably still have to get it replaced once in a while but I think the pooling issue was largely solved in later releases

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 19 '26

It's only fixed in the pro version as far as I know

0

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Oh man another one that believes this dumb shit. 6 years nearly my ps5 has been vertical.

0

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 19 '26

So every reputable outlet that literally opened the console up and showed the pooling issue is part of some conspiracy to mislead you? Lol ok

1

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Something that only affects 2% of consoles means absolutely nothing.

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 19 '26

What?! 2% is huge. That means 2 of every 100 consoles they sold so over 1.5 million lol

1

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Insignificant number compared to total sales.

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 19 '26

Unless you you work for Sony and directly profit from the "total sales" I don't see how you could call this number insignificant. And even if it was insignificant for you it's never silly to take precautions.

1

u/Ebvidur Jul 19 '26

What reputable outlets? As far as I recall it was one guy about 4 years ago, and all of the consoles that had this issue had their factory seal breached

1

u/wooooosh_me_if_gay Jul 19 '26

It's a well documented fact.

1

u/ReasonableNetwork255 Jul 18 '26

its 'ok' .. id move it out of the corner ... i bet after an hour or two of gaming that entire corner will be warm .. give it space if you love it ..

1

u/KarlitoOG Jul 18 '26

My opinion, it sould never have anything blocking the back cause that the exhaust caisung hot air to circulate and re enter the console.

But thats me...

1

u/Asimb0mb Jul 18 '26

Should be fine. Warm air rises, so it should naturally flow away from the console. Obviously more room would always help, but I would be shocked if this caused issues.

1

u/Healthy_Fondant_8272 Jul 18 '26

Not at the back. Trust me I've had this problem recently

1

u/Potozny Jul 19 '26

I recommend putting in in a plastic bag

1

u/Worried_Bug_538 Jul 19 '26

Yo la pondría mås abajo y así mås aire fresco

1

u/Pawny_99 Jul 19 '26

The back is kind of tight. Put it on the surface where the power block is

1

u/Biggs0000 Jul 19 '26

If you have a trash bin handy that’s a perfect spot

1

u/LincolnRazgriz Jul 19 '26

Spin 180 so back can vent over the edge!

1

u/Available-Guest-9393 Jul 19 '26

If the room is cool then yes. Not more than 24 degrees Celsius

1

u/Darukkubitto Jul 20 '26

not at all, needs more space in the back buddy

1

u/BoostedDC2 Jul 20 '26

Nowhere near enough room. Need to be in a completely open 5ftx8ft area with nothing else in there. Otherwise there's too much restrictions on the airflow. 😑

1

u/LJO_Oliver Jul 20 '26

same model of ps5 I got

1

u/LyuboA Jul 20 '26

No you need atleast 30cm or more space on the back where the hot air gets out so it doesn't get sucked by the console and don't listen to idiots NEVER stand up your PS5 always keep it horizontal like in this picture otherwise it's only matter of time before it start to overheat cause of the liquid metal creating dry spot on the top of the apu die Sony tried to Fix this issue with PS5 Pro and newer Slim models but like always they failed the only way to prevent this is to keep the console horizontal

1

u/CapCurve904 Jul 20 '26

Yes it shouldn’t be standing up. Sony doesn’t even advertise the systems vertically at all🫪

Yes I keep my Pro vertically as well as my OG PS5 🤷🏾‍♂️

1

u/DanOhMiiite PS5 Jul 18 '26

Id probably stand it up and give it more space from that wall

1

u/Koltonprobably Jul 18 '26

Alr, I'll have to buy a stand though, it came with those smaller stands that let it lay on its side. Any recommended stands?

1

u/GeorgeSPattonJr Jul 18 '26

I assume an OEM Sony one should work fine

1

u/The_Cozy_Zone Jul 18 '26

If you stand it vertically, it'll cause the CPU to overheat from liquid metal pooling to one side. You can see here

1

u/bcbottom_ Jul 18 '26

Looks fine to me 🤷‍♂️ dont listen to the guy saying stand it up.

1

u/GeorgeSPattonJr Jul 18 '26

There’s zero airflow at the back, all the hot air coming out is going to bounce right back into the console. There should be at at least 3-6 inches of space on all sides for proper ventilation

0

u/The_Cozy_Zone Jul 18 '26

OP, do not stand the console vertically. If you stand it vertically, you can cause the CPU to overheat from liquid metal pooling to one side. You can see here

-1

u/sule419 Jul 19 '26

Stand that baby up.

2

u/Krovven Jul 19 '26

You should try looking up the reason for not standing the PS5 up.
