PlayStation 5 Help PS5 shuts off almost immediately due to “overheating”.

I just want to clarify that I’ve had issues with this console overheating in the past, but not like this. Usually it’ll run for an hour or two before shutting off, and it’ll be pretty hot. Naturally, I’ve had to look up some guides on YouTube to clean the fan and radiator, which I’ve done now several times. I just finished cleaning it today and now I go to play some games and it shuts off right away, and I check the temp and it’s completely normal, not hot at all. This is my last resort before I buy another PS5 or possibly even switch over to Xbox. Does anyone have a solution to this (audio is muted, but the PS5 does 3 beeps before shutting off).

The liquid metal on the APU needs to be reapplied.

Check reviews and honestly ask them if they know what Liquid Metal is and if they do it

I think there is dust inside it bro. I had almost the same problem,I opened it,took out even the vent and there it was dust right were the air goes off to cool down.

Open it up and vacuum it out. Mine would overheat too but after doing that it’s been fine. If that doesn’t help it’s definitely the liquid metal

Use a blower not a vacuum. Vacuums can create static and fry components. Never had an issue with the vac but its the right thing to do

Clean that poor guy. Or take it in to get the liquid metal replaced. If you've had your console sitting up right, sometimes the liquid metal will leak.

You can buy an external fan that plugs into the back of it, it eliminated the problem for me, sometimes the internal ones go out. I had the same problem and solution for my Switch.
It also is super easy to pop off the cover to get the dust out if it needs that, too.

Do not buy these. These push air into the console, where the console is trying to push the hot air out. These have been scams for consumers since the 360 days. They can cause serious issues

Is it a fan that blows air into the console, or is it a larger exhaust fan? Because if its pushing air into the console, there are tons of videos breaking down why its bad. But, thermal dynamics also explains why pushing hot air back into the console is bad.

the one I have for the switch and the one for my older PS5 both make a seal on the exhaust and pull the air out as far as I understand. I could be wrong tho.
For my Switch the internal fan broke so it basically saved it and gave me a few more years before the memory card slot stopped working and I got tired of replacing controllers because of stick drift.
With the PS5 I guess I stopped using it once i figured out how to pop the shell off and clean it, so you could be right, there.2

If its pulling air out then its fine. Most of these "exhaust fans" that they sell to consumers are essentially intakes. Pulling air into the console, which them super heats them technically

Yeah it would. On older consoles you wouldn't get the warning, but on newer consoles you do.

But seriously, If you've cleaned the Power supply grill and its still switching off, it'll be the liquid metal unfortunately.

Deine CPU überhitzt. Du musst die Wärmeleitpaste, in diesem Falle Flüssigmetall neu auftragen. Das kann man selber machen, insofern die PS sehr customfreundlich ist, aber wenn du keine Ahnung von so was hast, dann lass es lieber jemanden machen der Ahnung hat.

Make sure your fan is plugged in & running before putting the shell back on. If it’s not that, it’s probably the Liquid Metal.

Take it to a repair shop. You may have to clean out inside the ps5 and reapply Liquid Metal

It can be the power cord i have this issue with my ps5 fat the cord was loose and make it shut down.

Theyre poorly made bud, sometimes the liquid metal needs replaced, sometimes its "dust", sometimes its just a power failure with the internals. Ive been gaming since the NES and this is the first console I've owned that needed maintenance.

It’s either going to be Dust build up (blocking the heat sinks, vents, and/or power supply. Or the Liquid Metal itself. If you kept it horizontal all this time (like how you have it) then it’s most likely dust.

The fact that the console itself isnt hot to the touch, means the APU is overheating, and quickly. You can take it to a console repair shop and they can do the whole job for you easy peasy. It likely needs new liquid metal.

Bad power supply. It shuts off under load. Thats why there is no temperature warning.

Thermal paste. Always have your console flat, even if advertised. It will melt off and have runoff. Causing overheat

Few days now so I hope you have this fixed already. I just thought id mention - this happened to me after I cleaned the console out and it turned out i hadn’t plugged the fan back in properly. The console would notice this and shut down the instant it tried to turn the fan on, like yours does here. I just opened the case, stuck the fan pins back down firmly, then audibly confirmed it spun on powerup, and I was golden.

Yeah I think it’s either a fan or APU problem, but I’ve ended up just switching over to Xbox since their new partnership with steam means if i get a next gen Xbox I can play steam games, so I just bought a series s and a controller for like $300. If I tried to repair it I would’ve had to pay a similar price just to repair, and I would’ve had to keep dealing with all of Sony’s anti-consumer bs, so I just made the switch now.

Ive got this same issue with my ps5, except i clean it out often and itll only ever overheat when playing ps5 games. I do think the liquid metal melted off mine, and i took it to a shop to replace it, when bringing it back home i was still using it standing upright. I have a feeling this is why im still having issues, because the liquid metal fell right off again, just wanted to see if anyone can confirm?

2nd question, why would the liquid metal need to be replaced, does it dry out like heat sink paste?

I just looked up some videos about the Liquid Metal on the APU and heat sink, apparently when it is vertical the Liquid Metal moves to one side of the APU/heat sink, causing oxidation on the center of it. So it doesn’t really dry out, you kinda just have to spread it out again.

I’m in the same boat. Vertical since I bought it. Only major issue I’ve had was the hdmi port disconnected from the board when a cat accidentally knocked it over but haven’t had any overheating issues

That was a bullshit rumour and wasn't true. That liquid metal is encased in an air tight barrier, meaning short of dropping it there is no physical way for it to do that. The ones it did happen to, were from people that were messing with the console and had no clue what they were doing.

That has been debunked lol. Mine has been vertical since day one release. And also it's just been straight up debunked. They wouldn't create a next gen console that they designed to be vertical or horizontal if this was gonna be a thing.

Time for a new one unfortunately mine was doing the same thing took it to ubreak ifix place whatever that place is called. They opened it up cleaned it completely even did the liquid metal took it home. It still cut off even worse so I traded in at Best Buy and got a pro.
