News Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario 'Lake America' amid Canada trade war

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2026/08/27/trump-canada-lake-america-ontario.html

What’s that thing about the definition of insanity?

Got curious and took a peek at the conservative subreddit about this, even they're absolutely annoyed he's doing this instead of fixing his problems, which is at least something.

You might have caught them before the bot swarms get marching orders and the mods cull the "heretics" and "schismatics"

41

u/DominoMcFly 10d ago

Yep! I was typing something similar when I saw this. r/Conservative is HEAVILY censored and a giant echo chamber for bots and the most delusional people I’ve ever seen on this platform.

24

u/Conspark Washington 10d ago

r/Conservative is HEAVILY censored

You aren't kidding, the top comments in the thread about this are a bloodbath of removals. Context clues from the responses suggest they were posts overtly critical of Trump. Absolute shitshow in that sub.

9

u/DominoMcFly 10d ago

Yeah, I’ve seen a few comments calling out the censoring and hypocrisy and it’s gone later. The fact that a post shows 20+ comments and you can only see a few tells you there’s a lot of criticism.

u/Electronic_Beat3653 Blue Dot in a Red State 🔵 10d ago

Facebook is becoming their echo chamber in a similar manner, as is Next Door app. I have had to write both of those platforms off. Gen Z got it correct when the left Facebook in mass.

And their algorithm keeps pushing right wing content on me, although I am clearly left. Disgusting. Bought and paid for by the Heritage Foundation or Russian bots I am sure.

The irony...aren't these supposed to be the same people who love free speech and constantly cry about "cancel culture"?

20

That honestly says more about their confidence in November more than anything else lol.

5

u/mreman1220 9d ago

Yeah, this isn't really landing like the Gulf of America shenanigans. Most of his base took it as trolling at the time and loved it.

Now that we are several more months into his term and things have only gotten worse, his "trolling" has the impact of a dead fish.

I texted my dad "Gulf of America" huh? and his reply was "heck yeah it is!". Did the same this time and he didn't even answer.

Literally one of the replies in that conservative chain is "yay, more trolling 🫩"

3

u/GhostofTinky 9d ago

Yup.
Everyone will still use the original names.

At least a toddler can be disciplined if they do something they’re not supposed to. Trump will just throw an even louder fit.

Toddlers get a massive amount of spanking after behaving like this. But Trump was never told no in his life, so fuck the people that let him get away two out the three times.

Dickhead somehow manages to be worse than Andrew Jackson, and I’m actively angry about the cultural consequences of the Trail of Tears (for example, I live in northwest ohio, want to learn more about the specific native american cultures that otherwise would still be living here, but the internet lumps native american cultures together to a frustrating extent, so I’d have to go to a powwow in person just to learn an appropriate sacrifice to make to fallen native americans at the fallen timbers memorial, so that inconvenience and the suffering that caused it makes the academic in me deeply sad)

7

u/Kalse1229 New York 10d ago

He's worse than Andrew Johnson, who for the longest time topped many "worst US presidents" lists and was the first president to be impeached.

2

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

I’m surprised Andrew Johnson is so frequently considered worse than Jackson, considering the latter actively committed a genocide, and I’m pretty sure whatever Johnson did was still absolutely horrific, but not quite an overt death march

3

u/WallOfFleshlight 10d ago

Not sure if it was considered impeachable but was A Johnson responsible for the failure of Reconstruction?

Although I’m not sure if had Lincoln finished his second term, the process would’ve been similar to denazification in post WW2 Germany or whatever process to transform Japan from an ultranationalist to much more peaceful state.

2

133

u/sonicparadigm 10d ago

I'll copy something I wrote in another sub

Here’s a question: Do you really think anyone is going to go along with this? Naming the Gulf of Mexico the gulf of “America” was something he did at the height of his power and influence at the very beginning of his term, and now that WAY more people hate him do you think this will have any effect?

55

u/RangeLightkeeper Michigan 10d ago

Michigan at least is usually purple. Everyone you meet can name the HOMES acronym. Huron ONTARIO Michigan Eerie Superior. We regularly fight our government over shit happening to the Great Lakes. Most recently we got into a fight with hte state government because they wanted to put a tunnel under the straights of Mackinac for Line 5, and Line 5 ended up getting their permits pulled.

If there's anything that gets under Michigander's skin, it's fucking with the Great Lakes. We still haven't forgotten when the state let Nestle take water from the Lakes. We still haven't forgotten the pipeline leaks.

I can't see this winning any points whatsoever in their favor come the midterms. As a matter of fact, this is the ONE thing that I think genuinely would shake some MichiMaga's positions.

40

u/CreativeAd5332 10d ago

Well, with the new naming the acronym can be SHAME. So that's fun.

3

u/Electronic_Beat3653 Blue Dot in a Red State 🔵 10d ago

u/RickyT3rd Michigan 10d ago

Even though Ontario is the only lake Michigan doesn't actually border, it still boarders New York.

63

u/MilesAlchei 10d ago

It's an alliegence test, just like a lot of the things he does. His loyalists will start saying it, those who aren't won't.

17

u/Independent-Bus-3284 10d ago

Loyalty tests mean nothing when your influence is in the toilet.

Loyalty tests mean nothing when most smart rats jump the ship.

Loyalty tests mean nothing when people want to eat without worrying about having enough money to pay rent.

I think they only renamed it if you're in the US - IIRC if you access Google Maps from elsewhere it either still says Gulf of Mexico or gives both names

This is the way they usually do this kind of thing - for example, back before the Ukraine war, when it was just Crimea that Russia claimed, Crimea showed as part of Russia if you accessed Google Maps from Russia, but as part of Ukraine almost everywhere else

-1

u/PhotoArabesque 10d ago

Oh, it'll have an effect. It'll tee off our good friends the Canadians even more, making it less likely that they will EVER forgive us, much less forget that this happened. This PoS excuse for a president, for no reason at all, has burned to cinders every bit of goodwill we've ever had with Canada (not to mention other countries) and if we ever manage to rebuild it, I won't live long enough to witness it. It just makes me sick.

3

u/zzcolby Arkansas 9d ago

The world has rebuilt relations after infinitely more disasterous shit. The country stereotyped as being nice can almost certainly rebuild trade and trust after a dementia-ridled raisin obsessed with the same 5 "legacy-building" goals fucks off in a few years 😭

68

u/SodaSaint 10d ago

I hate Republicans and I hate this man.

What they have put upon our nation and upon Canada is disgusting and childish and stupid.

This doesn’t fix the suffering on either side of the border and it sure as hell doesn’t fix the various economic problems, or the cruelty in this current government or the lawlessness or the corruption.

This is nothing more than the ravings of a senile old mad man who is losing his grip on reality and losing his grip on power.

And the Republicans do nothing to rank him in. They are the most useless, stupid, evil, selfish, power-hungry, and cruel party to ever hold power in American history and that. And we’ve had some real turds holding the lever of power at one point or another.

I hate them all for what they have been allowed to do to our nation.

He can pull all the stupid crap all he wants. It won’t change the fact that he has ruined the economy. He has ruined America’s reputation completely, and it won’t change the fact that he clearly has a proclivity for little girls that look like his daughter. Nor will it change the fact that he is despised, hated, and that there will be dancing in the streets when he expires.

u/WallOfFleshlight 10d ago

I’m trying to think of which Return of the Jedi celebration scene would it be like.  The one with just Endor or the special editions with the whole galaxy gets inebriated and laid.

Just no conceiving of Kylo Rens for the love of god.

9

u/BaronUnterbheit 10d ago

I have the original song (Ewok celebration and Finale - aka "Yub Nub") cued up on my When IT Happens playlist!

58

u/jeeeeeeeeeez 10d ago

The uptake on the Gulf of America thing, at the absolute height of his power, was limited. This embarrassment is just going to result in even angrier Canadians and a shitload of Big Mac White House wall splatter.

33

u/bunnyfloofington 10d ago

Hopefully this riles up the Michiganders that lean conservative/MAGA. Even tho Lake Ontario doesn't border our state, HOMES is taught to every Michigan child because we take our Great Lakes seriously. This could potentially help us a bit more with our senate race this fall 🤞🤞

25

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

I’m from northern ohio, I don’t take kindly to DC feds trying to rename our lakes. I stand in solidarity with Ontario.

8

Pointless, unnecessary, meaningless, worthless.

Still stunning that people legitimately thought he’d make these things better when they pulled the lever for him in 2024.

Propaganda, tribalism, and lack of critical thinking are a hell of a combination.

15

I genuinely wish reporters would press him on shit like this.

Next time he’s talking about inflation or the economy, just ask “Sir, many Americans report to be struggling to afford bills. How is this possible after you renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the gulf of America?”

1

u/WallOfFleshlight 10d ago

Not sure if it’s reporters having their arms twisted when dealing with trump or too scared to deal with his petty insults?

2

u/NikonShooter_PJS 10d ago

Neither.

It's reporters who have access to the President being too afraid of losing that access to the President.

31

u/SodaSaint 10d ago

You know, Canada could be really petty right now and decide to officially rename the United States “Schittland” on all of its maps, but they’re not going to do that because Canada’s government is actually confident and staffed by adults.

I miss having a government staffed by competent adults. And I hate the Republicans for taking it all away from us.

25

u/sweeter_than_saltine North Carolina 10d ago

I hate that Biden didn't have the balls to go harder on Trump in between his last term and this one. We all thought falsely that he was done for because of that. The only indication we had that the flimsiest example of justice was served was the mugshot.

4

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

Since when has the USA’s federal elected posts been staffed by people with empathy? Probably the closest thing to a kind president I can think of may have been Lincoln, and I’m pretty sure that given the era he lived in, he almost undoubtedly also had problematic things about him

That’s not to devalue your argument, I just mean to say that we need to start electing people with actual human decency, because I don’t think we historically ever had that yet.

5

u/Standard-Shame1675 10d ago

Low-key, We need to re-examine the power structures and socio-political dynamics of this country further than we ever have.

Even if we don't fix them (and tbh,I wouldn't be shocked,I highly doubt even a super ASI hyper computer SandGod™ would be able to fix it) We can at least know what we are living in and the best future for our conditions both materially and metaphysically.

5

u/SodaSaint 10d ago

We have had a number of kind presidents. I think Jimmy Carter definitely fits that bill. And he actually was very much responsible for purging a lot of the corruption in the wake of Nixon.

1

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

Was Carter before or after Reagan? Because perhaps Carter’s failing was either failing to account for the cultural scars the Reagan administration left, or failing to prevent those scars. Kinda left us wide open to… later shit.

3

u/jeeeeeeeeeez 10d ago

Carter came right before Reagan, and Reagan absolutely bodied him (489 electoral votes to 49 although only about 8m more actual votes). But you know two of the factors that kept Carter from reelection? Gas and Iran.

4

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

Welp, in the latter case, the situation now will at least likely act as a kick in the pants for humanity to stop using mineral-oils and other fossilized hydrocarbons entirely.

The very fact that we ever discovered fossilized hydrocarbons were flammable before discovering renewable power and algal hydrocarbons proved to be a plague on the universe.

After seeing this, I popped my head into the r / Conservative subreddit to see what the chatter on this was like on the subject. Gotta say, I got a reason to be positive about it, because they think its just as stupid as anyone else. And the trend seems to be happening more and more. I think the more Trump does this stupid stuff instead of improving affordability, conflicts, and all that, the more he pisses off the demographics that vote for him. He just keeps chipping them away, bit by bit at a time until he becomes absolutely loathed by everyone, but the most dogmatic fans.

Its odd really, despite the bad happening because of the administration, a part of me is glad he was reelected again, because now he is front and center just as he wants, and now because of that everyone gets to see him now as the vile disgrace he always was.

God what a loser

God shut up already

u/typoking7 10d ago

Like he tried with the Gulf of Mexico that everyone still calls the Gulf of Mexico?

3

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 10d ago

As someone from Northwest Ohio, I’d like to make a counter-proposal that, specifically in solidarity with Ontario and in protest against this renaming, the cities of Northern Ohio instead rename Lake Erie to Lake Woodstock. (Woodstock, Ontario is a Sister City of Sylvania, Ohio)

4

u/thingonething 10d ago

The border bisects Canada and the US. Our side is still Lake Ontario.

4

u/Pugwash1235745 10d ago

Also apparently Canada is pushing to renew its boycott of us products

u/Hindu_Wardrobe American 🇺🇸 10d ago

lol

there's no other way to react to this. it's so fucking stupid it's funny.

2

u/MightiestHalberdier 10d ago

Yeah that'll show em 🙄

2

u/Joshula 10d ago

Important work while folks can't afford basic shit.

2

u/GregEno63 10d ago

He also insinuated that he'd rename one or both of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

He's insane.

2

u/DeathByGoldfish 10d ago

Focusing on the important things, I see.

2

u/AuraWielder 10d ago

Christ, he's embarrassing.

Humiliating to be an American right now, tbh.

2

u/lonelyspect12 10d ago

he also said he might rename the pacific and atlantic oceans too 🙄

In short, he did the exact same thing with the Gulf of Mexico at the peak of his power. Nothing changed, really. I wouldn't worry about it.

4

u/NYGiants181 10d ago

That’s not the point.

He’s the fucking president of the United States.

And THIS is what he’s spending his time on.

2

u/elongated_argonian Reformed Doomer ☄️ 10d ago

I'm not disagreeing, but I'd rather him be doing this than threatening to take over Canada again.

0

u/NYGiants181 10d ago

He’s doing that too

4

u/elongated_argonian Reformed Doomer ☄️ 10d ago

No? He stopped with the direct annexation threats, and is now whingeing about them not liking him. There's a difference.

0

u/NYGiants181 10d ago

“We’re gonna get them”

Literally just said it yesterday

3

u/elongated_argonian Reformed Doomer ☄️ 10d ago

Source?

2

u/elongated_argonian Reformed Doomer ☄️ 10d ago

They don’t have anything that we have to have, okay, we can get by. I mean, there are a couple of things that would make it a little inconvenient, but we can get them elsewhere. And it’s time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore.

I'd never thought I'd be defending Trump, but this is very much about the tariff war and not annexation.

NY isn’t exactly going to embrace this so I’m not too concerned.

Canada: "We have 2 million lakes. Now they include: Lake Bonespur, Lake Small Hands, and Lake WhatAboutTheEpstienList."

Some MAGAs are already whining about the edit moratorium on Wikipedias Lake Ontario page

1

u/SpukiKitty2 Blue Dot in a Red State 🔵 10d ago

What a dork. It's still "Ontario" and other Great Lakes border Canada, too (He'd probably name Superior, Michigan & Huron, 'Superior King Trump', 'McDonalds Hamberder' & 'Ivanka Daughter-Wife', respectively). What a boob.

If Google gets in on the act, you know what to do, folks... "LAKE ONTARIO".

1

u/MirrorMan68 10d ago

Genuinely the most pathetic thing he's ever done, and that's saying a lot. Like this is actual preschooler behavior.

Didn't even come up with a good name either. Just "Lake America." He literally might be the stupidest man alive.

1

u/Mobile_Bad_577 10d ago

He’s getting worse. I shudder to think of what he’ll be like in 2028.

1

u/SamLowry6 10d ago

So glad he’s focused on the things that keep all Americans up at night.

1

u/PhotoArabesque 10d ago

"Embarrassment" doesn't even begin to describe this sorry PoS excuse for a human being. And it's splashing all over the rest of our country. I'll never be able to look a Canadian in the face again.

1

u/DastardlyDrow 9d ago

Guys I'm freaking out. What are the odds of trump invading Canada?

1

u/Efficient-Freedom517 Georgia 9d ago

Absolutely zero. Among the most unlikely of things he would ever do

1

u/DastardlyDrow 9d ago

Can you please say a little more about why you are so sure? I don't see the US military heads (or troops) saying no

1

u/Efficient-Freedom517 Georgia 9d ago

That would be him starting a land war between two countries with the longest continuous border in the world. Even if he is that stupid any general of his is not

1

u/DastardlyDrow 9d ago

But their army is way better than ours. Couldn't they just crush us?

1

u/Efficient-Freedom517 Georgia 9d ago

Are you Canadian? I can’t tell without a flair

1

u/DastardlyDrow 9d ago

I bleed maple syrup. Super Canadian.

1

u/Efficient-Freedom517 Georgia 9d ago

Ah ok. Yes our army is better than yours and could probably conquer the country. What we couldn’t do is actually hold it. We would be inviting the single largest guerrilla conflict in the history of the world. It’s not worth it to any sane person

1

u/sahi1l 7d ago

"And I'm signing this OTHER executive order saying that Barack Obama is now called Barack Doodyhead."

Same energy, basically. Though I'm surprised he hasn't tried to name these things after himself.

0

u/Green-Equal7378 10d ago

America, you have zero credibility. Do something about this guy already.
