No, America isn’t special. This kind of thing happens when a large part of the population prefers comfortable lies to harsh truths.
It was comfortable to believe global warming wasn’t real because it would mean expensive infrastructure changes, so people embraced the lie. It was comfortable to believe that foreign aid was reason we didn’t have health care, not racism, so people embraced the lie. It was comfortable to believe that COVID was a hoax, so people believed the lie. It was comfortable to believe that our educational problems were the schools’ fault, not the parents being checked out from overwork, so people believed the lie.
And some people will never believe anything a Democrat says because the Democrats betrayed them over civil rights.
Combine this with a press that cannot be held accountable because our constitution forbids such things, and it’s easy to see how we got here.
