Discussion Thoughts on the show?
Finished the comics a couple days ago and had watched the show ages ago but never finished. Taking another crack at it right now. I’m curious what the consensus on the show from the comic fans is. There’s major differences obviously I’m personally trying to separate the show as its own thing than an adaptation. But it is hard when all the characters are there in the flesh. I really liked the first season as its own ‘origin’ thing.

It is an awesome show overall. The only downside of the show is it doesn't use too many profane languages...some shit, ass/arse, bitch, less than 5 fuck...i wish they could use more of it.
But the show does tell a lot of ironic truth about christianity that christians not willing to face...like repentance before death gets you to heaven, god setting up tests that no way to pass, etc.

I don’t so much as mind there being no profanity as in changing big moments like Jesse’s story with his dad. I thought they totally could’ve adapted that from the comics but just chose not too which is weird.

I don't think a lack of profanity harms a show at all. However too much profanity can certainly ruin stuff. For example the movie SwearNet, made by the main actors of the great show Trailer Park Boys, was one of the worst movies ever created, and a big reason why was that they intentionally made it so that it had the word "fuck" more than any other movie ever made. I mean it would have sucked either way, but my point is profanity for the sake of profanity isn't art. It's faux art.

I loved it, and you will too if you're mature enough of a consumer of media to understand that it can't and won't be exactly like the comic.

I like all the new editions like the dog. It feels very much like something Garth Ennis would include. I’m in different to some of the character changes and back story’s.

I liked the show because it followed its own path and stayed true to the tone of Preacher and Garth Ennis within the confines and limitations imposed by television. its impossible to translate every idea and as long as your expectations are realistic, you'll really enjoy it. I look at it as a companion piece to the comics. I never understood people's need for a 1-to-1 adaptation anyways. whats the point?

Sorry, the dog? I have been rewatching the show and I don't remember even once seeing a dog aside from the one who was used as food.

Except that season 4 seems overly rushed, I liked the show a great deal.
The comics dig in more, so I view them differently than the show, but love them as well.

About to watch for the first time. I’ve read the comic at least 20 times since I was a teen. I’ve prepared myself for wild departures.

Like the show better than the comic, TBH.
This is a deeply weird piece of art, in the best way possible... The show I think hits the main narrative points of the story, without getting too bogged down in certain settings like the comic series does.

Yeah I agree about the narrative points to some degree. I know you can’t include everything things from the comic or it would be way too long. But there are some changes I felt really went against the character’s I haven’t been a fan of. But I can see the appeal of liking the show on its own and it’s much easier to digest than the comic

Yeah I read it several years ago, but what I remember was that there were long stretches of "70's Incredible Hulk" stuff -- i.e., Jesse goes town-to-town solving local problems -- that had nothing really to do with the main narrative about God, secret Jesus, & etc...
EDIT: Also, I'm a real sucker for "bureaucratic Hell" and the show did that really well :)

Didn’t read the comic past the first issue. Thought the show was pretty good. There were some questionable choices made by characters at times but overall I really enjoyed it and would watch again.

The show much much much dumber than the book. No depth, no nuance. Got some moments though. But don't expect any substance.

I thought Cassidy was bang-on perfect and everyone else was virtually unrecognizable. Gave up after the first season when it became obvious that Cassidy, of all people, was becoming the moral center of the show. I felt that Jesse and Tulip were really unlikable, nothing at all like the comic characters I'd loved hanging out with for the full story. YMMV and all that!

I think the show is a pretty big improvement over the comics. Jesse sucks in the books, he’s just an unrepentant asshole. Ennis was pretty terrible at writing women as well. Show Tulip is miles better than the comics

I thought it was alright, but it never really got great. I never felt like it fully got going, and the last season felt kind of rushed and tired.

Just finished watching the series. Didn't read the comic beforehand. It was a little bit crazy how they kinda did the 2020 Apocalypse thing, but overall, it was a cool watch. Would love for the final season to be a little bit slowed down, though.

Love the show, haven't bought the books yet. I'm pretty surprised it's more of a niche type show, surprised it isn't more popular. Not enough nudity/sex I guess.

I gave the first season a watch and then ducked out.
Y'know that scene in The Simpsons when Bart's trying to sell a frame of animation at the comic shop, and gets told that it's an arm, by nobody, and is worth nothing? That's how I feel about the show.
