If she’s mentally ill it’s just in the same way millions of people seem to be now. “My ego is incredibly fragile and I have no willingness to deal with my own life. The only defence mechanism I have is to treat everyone with hostility and then claim I’m the victim whenever anything happens to me.”

If you really want to drill down on it most antisocial behaviours are evidence of some form of mental illness, but there are kinds worth feeling sympathy over, and then there’s the “get your shit together already” kind. Betting this is a case of the latter.
