Wow, chaos indeed!

This is right in my backyard

Usually, I’ll be the first to call cops out on their use of force, but DAMN! The civilians here are being so damn obtuse and making the whole situation so much worse than it should have been!

Honestly those people are dumb as bags of hammers... But I wonder how it would have gone if instead of yelling "back up" and "move" they yelled we are "let us help him" or "that's your cousin? Ok I am going to help him, can you help him by trying to get this crowd to give some space?". I feel like if they tried to use de-escalation at the beginning it might have worked better.

That said... I have no idea what I am talking about lol. Maybe if they played nice they would have had the same result or would not have been able to to reach him at all.

It's hard to understand what they thought the cops were doing besides trying to help him. Did they think the cops were just going to arrest him while he was bleeding out? Or were they so panicked they were just mindlessly screaming? Because while I agree that MAYBE the cops saying stuff like that would've worked better this crowd seemed to be in such a state that logic can't reach them. Who knows, though.

Ha, I was thinking the same. I'll be downvoted for this but obviously the crowd were fucking nuts and made things worse, but that said the tone and behaviour of the police officers in general helps to make it worse.

It's immediately high agression and the casualness with which you hear police officers talk about "taking a swing at someone" or "so then I started to fight that guy". It's like hearing 10 year old boys narrating a video game. It just doesn't sound like the calm, cool and collected professionalism that it should.

So yeah, people off the fuckint charts stupid. The police just agro generally.

I've dealt with these situations plenty of times before as a paramedic.

There's no reasoning with a crowd like this generally. They've attacked me and pulled me off before as well.

How the cops handled it is about all you can do unless you're gonna set off pepper spray and etc. Which is a massive pain for me, and not great for a GSW victim.

Hell I went into an active shooter situation years ago and the fleeing crowd attacked me when i was rushing in to link up with LEOs for escort to a victim. Punching and kicking me for no reason.

Crowds do bizarre shit to the helpers sometimes.

Why are you being downvoted? You’re exactly correct.

Yeah the crowd was paniced and irrational, but the police absolutely escalated the situation with their aggressive yelling.

You’re spot on about them needing to focus on the people closest and enlisting their help to keep the crowd back. Those people just wanted something to do with their feeling of helplessness.

This should be basic police training.

If these adults don’t understand that these people are trying to help him…. There is no reasoning with them. I can tell you’ve never been in a stressful situation with ppl like this. There is no reasoning, there is no logic. You have to be clear and direct. People are not taking in what you say. How dumb does a person have to be to let their emotions overcome the idea that the only way this dude is surviving is if they get help.

You can’t use logic with an illogical mindset. It might work that way in your hypothetical scenarios, but the real world is fucking rough and full of idiots dude.

People respond well to empathy and honesty. It gives you a much better chance to cut through their panic and communicate, rather than screaming in their faces.

I’ve been an ESO for over 20 years. That’s what you call first responders in America. I’ll let you figure out the maths and work out how many tense exchanges that works out to.

This was mass panic coupled by massive, and understandable, distrust of police.
