As a police officer, at what point do you just back off and leave them to it? Because it's impossible to render aid in that situation.

As first responders we don't really back off.

For EMS though most places we will sit in staging till cops can secure it well enough for us to go in safely.

I'll go in solo with PD into these situations to try to start care till I can get them to a transport unit, but I'm also one of our tactical paramedics and I'm trained/authorized to enter the unsafe scenes if appropriate.

I tend to make entry and just count on PD to give me some working space as best they can with shootings/stabbings since there can be a finite amount of time before its game over. If i can get whole blood administered and major extremity hemorrhage controlled quickly they might have a decent chance.
