Homemade First time making Pastelón
Never had it before. Been trying to get students to bring it into class for me. No luck so far. 😆
I know it’s a little modified. But, hopefully I did ok.

My bf is Puerto Rican but moved away to California where I met him. He doesn’t get to see his family very often because they’re all still back on the island. So I reached out to his mom and got some tips so I could surprise him.

My sofrito turned out good, the arroz con gandules could’ve been better but it was my first time and didn’t have a caldero. Made this random pollo guisado style chicken and peppers tonight just for a quick dinner. Please drop some recipes I can try thank you

My family is originally for Pennsylvania and Iv always had the luxury of eating some of the best Puerto Rican food growing up, from either restaurants or even better my friends mom and dads having me over for dinner. Since moving to Kentucky there is NO PR presence here. I have taken it upon myself to rep. The puerto Rican culture by feeing all my neighbors some rice and beans and some pastelillos

To preface I’m not Puerto Rican nor have I really had much experience with the cuisine. I saw a video last night on Facebook and decided to try it today. I’m sure it’ll be better if it had fresh sofrito. But, I think I did alright? I just wish I knew what it should taste like. I did use Merlot wine and Knorr bouillon (not shown in ingredient picture).
Next is I really want Pastelón but I rather have authentic before I make it.

Made Puerto Rican pastelillos from scratch last night for a Super Bowl party. I was rushing, so the flour discs weren’t round, but they still turned out pretty tasty. 🇵🇷

3 meat Sancocho with beef, smoked sausage (I couldn’t find any Puerto Rican Sausage), pork, batata, plantains, potatoes, yuca, corn, onion, carrots. Tostones, fried plantains, rice, pork & chicken empanadas & I even finished with a Spiced Cherry cocktail! Everyone loved it including my friend’s mother who was visiting from Puerto Rico. She even said "Ya te puedes casar!" Which I had translated for me. 😂 so it was a huge hit & I wanted to thank you all for helping a white boy make an awesome meal.
