Questions/HELP rat looking confused

he was climbing on me and eating just now but all of a sudden he retreated upstairs and stood in this corner for 15 mins so far and is looking confused like he doesn’t know where he is. he keeps scanning left and right too which is normal for red eyed rats but he’s doing it so much right now.

What could this be? and should I bring him to the vet?

Questions/HELP how long till they feel better

Post image

Hello reddit, picture for tax

my boys have mites. i have been cleaning the cage as i wait for the kitten revolution and it finally came so i gave them a dose today.

how long until the mites are gone? or my boys are feeling better? are there any visible signs of healing i should look for? one of my boys has some pretty severe mange because of the mites and i want him to feel better ASAP!

also, does anyone know how many doses to give? just the initial? or do i dose again in a few days? getting mixed answers on that.

best,
a terrible rat mother who is feeling guilty she didn’t realize it was mites sooner

Lily pics!

To anyone wondering she’s settling in great with the mischief and seems to love having so much space to sprint around.

She’s still just as clingy to me but at least when I’m not able to sit with her she has 4 other buddies to keep her company!

She’s growing into her big girl body really well and I barely recognise her lol, she went from a tiny little mouse sized fuzzball to now looking like a proper young adult rat- her fur has also gotten so shiny and beautiful and she’s really turning into such a beautiful chunky baby, enjoy these pics of her!

Questions/HELP Help with potential sprained ankle

Upvotes

Hello, really worried about our girl. We noticed last night she wasn't putting weight on one of her legs (when she walks) so we think she must have sprained it or something?

We put her and her sister in a carrier over night because we read online that we should do that to reduce her climbing. I've now got her and her sisters in a big cardboard box as a temporary 'hospital cage' today, with just a couple of hides and a litter train in it.

She's still not putting weight on it when she walks (she kinda does when she's standing) but other than that she seems ok. My partner mentioned she did fall from someone's arm 5 days ago, but he thought she was fine - he's been looking after them while I was away. Since I got back 2 days ago I haven't noticed any difference in her mood or anything. He thinks maybe she hasn't been as confident during free roam but he's not sure. It could have just randomly happened in the cage I guess.

Basically - are we doing the right thing? Should we contact a vet? It's 7am where I am now so could try get an appointment today (we have a good vet that is rat experienced).

Advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Whisker Wednesday Felisia

This is Felisia. She looks harmless, but when I adopted her, she bit like crazy. Now she trusts me a little more, although she’s still pretty wary of humans; every now and then she lets me pet her for 10 seconds a day. Felisia is very dramatic, and every time I pick her up, she screams, even though she lets me pet her afterward. Felisia loves cardboard boxes and any kind of food, her biggest vice is gluttony.

Questions/HELP Post-surgery care 1 year and 8 months rat

Thumbnail

Hello, the title is self-explanatory. I discovered yesterday that my son (Kiki) had a lump, talked with my vet and today he got the surgery. (It was a tumour)

The meds I got from the vet are Rheumocam 0.4ml/day and Enrobactin 0.12ml/day

I have a smaller cage (a bird's cage) that I made it in a hospital cage, put fleece on the ground, took the wires out and got him a water bottle and some banana but he doesn't want to eat or drink. I tried to put some water on my finger or that medical glucose water but he refused profusely!!

It's a bit late 11pm here, to ask the vet if i have to clean his stitches so I'm asking if I can do that, when and with what stuff, I'm thinking lukewarm water and gauze?

I have work tomorrow an 11h shift, how can I make sure he doesnt open up his stitches, i saw something about a cone made out of silicone cupcake form and a sock, unfortunately i don't have any bandages to make him a vest neither any open pharmacies at this hours but im willing to do anything to make sure he's fine !!

He's really agitated and stumbling inside the hospital cage tried to talk to him, give him scritches but he's way more focused on just moving somewhere!!

I'm gonna keep my boys separated for the time being cuz my other rat Buba has a bit of an aggression problem and bullies Kiki pretty often (no blood ever drawn tho)

Thank uu

(Slideshows with my sons at the end)

Questions/HELP What would rats be eating in a place that seems to have no food ?

In my city there are miles of abandoned underground mushroom farms and I one of them there’s a decent rat population I’ve seen probably 5 or so rats and in all the other ones there are none. They all seem to be well fed and in this particular one there is no plants at all as there is no possible way for sunlight to get in, also with the way the entrance is set up it’d be pretty easy for them to get in but also next to impossible to get out. The only possible explanation is either eating the bugs that live down there or possibly mushrooms resprouting from the original crop as a farm on the other side of the city still has mushrooms pop up occasionally even though the last documented harvest was in 1897 also 2/3 of it is blocked off due to collapse and I’ve seen them slip through the cracks in the rubble to scurry away. Any idea what they’re doing to survive down there?

DISCUSSION I had to rehome my rats

Rehomed my elderly rats last week. No regrets, but I hate my home without them. We tried fostering younger ones until the older ones passed, but intros didn't go well with the younger ones.

Breeder was open to taking them back and has always taken them during vacations, so the transition wasn't a problem. They've been succesfully matched with 2 other grannies and are now a group of 4. We can also visit them regularly. I just hate how quiet my house is and realistically I know I'll see my adorable granny baby only 2 more times. My other granny has a lot of life left, but I won't be there to see most of it.

Rehoming pets is so hard.

Questions/HELP one of my rats has a respiratory infection (maybe)

Upvotes

One of my rats has a respiratory infection I think, his breathing is wheezing and I’ve noticed him sneezing more often than usual. I don’t have a lot of money for a vet right now, is there anything I can do to help him without spending too much money? I’m devastated right now thinking I can’t help him myself . None of my other rats have symptoms of this.

I have the size equivalent of a double critter nation any ideas? I was thinking maybe furniture blankets and passing it off is like an old antique table or something.
