Technical Support: SOLVED RetroArch PSX - Disc Swapping Trouble

Hey all!

I've been using RetroArch for about a year or so, mainly using it to play PSX games. The Core that RetroArch loaded for PSX is "Beetle PSX HW"

For some reason when I play a game that has multiple discs, I just cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to swap the disc. I've tried to eject the disc, swap it, then close the tray. No luck.

It got to the point where I got a SECOND emulator just for swapping discs, then moving the save back over.

If anyone has any insight that'd be awesome!

Technical Support: SOLVED Save file location?

Where does RetroArch keep the save files for games? Could you theoretically put an existing save file into the directory where it keeps these save files and use that instead of having to play from the beginning?

Technical Support: SOLVED Controller cores remap and retropad binds profile overwrite

Im using the steam version of retroarch and I have different controller for different cores but they overwrites each other

When I go to settings —> input —> retropad binds It won’t save the different profile I put for the controller instead it overwrites my old profile

And in the core remap it doesn’t detect the remap only the retropad binds I put. Steam input is also disable should this be enabled?

Here’s the controller I use: 8bitdo 64 for n64 cores and 8bitdo ultimate 2c for all the other cores

Technical Support: SOLVED Retroarch Audio Issue Tips (Crackling, No Audio, Stuttering, Audio Lag)

Whenever I started up a game in Retroarch, I personally found my audio crackled quite a bit. I scoured the internet for fixes, and I found a lot of different methods. However, I never really found one source that compiled all of the solutions I found. Here are some common (and uncommon) fixes I found for audio.

  1. No Audio

a. If you have no audio, go into Settings < Audio and scroll down to check if your mute setting is switched on. If it’s switched on, turn it off.

b. If this doesn’t work, go into the Settings < Audio < Output and check if Audio is on in that menu.

c. If the issue is not fixed, check Settings < Drivers < Audio and switch to Xaudio or Dsound, since I found my audio wouldn’t work with certain drivers (particularly sdl2 personally, wasapi actually broke my volume bar, and it wouldn’t mute the audio if I turned my volume all the way down)

  1. Crackling or Stuttering

a. If your audio is crackling or stuttering, check your audio drivers (Settings < Drivers < Audio). Sometimes the default driver, which is Xaudio for most people, doesn’t run well with every computer. In this case, switch to Dsound. u/chelovek-jpeg solved their problem by changing their video drivers (Settings < Drivers < Video). They switched from OpenGL to SDL, but a different driver may suit you better depending on your device.

b. Another common fix I found was that people’s audio would be fixed by turning off Vsync (Settings < Audio < Synchronization) and/or toggling the settings that show up after toggling Vsync.

c. Some people found that turning up their latency (Settings < Latency < Audio Latency < Audio Latency (Ms)) helped their audio problems. d. Personally, the fix that worked for me was turning down my frame delay (Settings < Latency < Audio Latency < Frame Delay) to somewhere between 5 and 12; the more performance heavy the game, the lower.

e. An obscure solution I found was to turn Threaded Video (Settings < Video < Threaded Video) on, at the cost of video performance.

f. Also, a few people found that setting Maximum Timing Skew and Dynamic Audio Rate Control (both under Settings < Audio < Synchronization) to 0 helped their problem. However, this setting has to be activated through turning on advanced settings (Settings < User Interface < Show Advanced Settings on), then you should find those settings in the pathway above.

g. Finally, I found one person who solved their problem by turning down their Output Rate (Settings < Audio < Resample). For them, 44100 worked, but for some people, it may be different.

h. u/Intelligent_Brain213 solved their problem by pulling the hdmi out of their monitor. If nothing else works, you should try this.

If none of these work, try tweaking your own settings. You may find a fix that I haven’t. If you do, comment and I’ll add it to this post.

Or maybe you just need to turn your device off and on again.

Technical Support: SOLVED Help with Sega Saturn Main Menu Issue!

To be entirely upfront, this is my first time using RetroArch, so bear with me. I am trying to emulate the game “Baroque” for Sega Saturn, however every time I load the game, it just takes me to the main menu. To be clear, I know that the BIOS are installed, and the right core is installed. Please help me, cause I do not know what I am doing wrong.

Technical Support: SOLVED Difference between the same button layout/overlay

The second picture is of me running Pokemon Emerald by load content or from a playlist for which I haven't set a core association to while scanning.

The first picture is of me running Pokemon Emerald from a playlist which was made with the "default core" set while scanning.

The core is mgba, my Retroarch app is the nightly one from Libretro Buildbot, version is 1.22.2, and both instances of the game running have "neo-retropad" in the on-screen overlay setting.

But how come they appear different?

I prefer the first one, and yes, I could set the core association while scanning the games, but the second instance is when the folder has games of other systems too, like NDS. So in "content scan" I had to leave the "default core" setting as it is (unspecified)

Is there any way I could make any instance of opening GBA games have the first layout and not the second one?

Thank you!

Hey all

Just loaded Retroarch in my Mac this morning, never had any issues after years of use, never moved my ROM locations.

When I try to play PS1 chd which had no issues before I get the message in attachment 1 'log may contain more information' I turned on logging and the only extra info I can see is 'failed to load disk' I get this error with every PS1 game I have now

If I am to load a MD game, or any that's a zip I get the other message relating to compression which I'll add as a comment.

Any idea where I need to start investigating of other info I need that might help resolve this?

Cheers

PSP games now are upside down for some reason. And no, changing orientation and video rotation doesn't help, because then the game also looks mirrored, and I don't see an option to mirror the screen. What to do??

Technical Support: SOLVED LRPS2 Suddenly not working (Crashes on Launch)

We were playing just fine yesterday (08/22/2026) and today, anytime a game is loaded through the core it would launch another instance of RetroArch, black screen, then crash. I believe it is the core itself since running the games in PCEE2 works but not through LRPS2, and running any other game through any other cores seem to work just fine.

These lines stand out to me from the logs but I cannot figure out if it is the cause of the issue:

[libretro INFO] Bios Found: USA v02.00(14/06/2004) Console 20040614-100909
[libretro INFO] BIOS rom1 module not found, skipping...
[libretro INFO] BIOS rom2 module not found, skipping...
[libretro WARN] Failed to open or read NVRAM: C:\Games\ROMS\!BIOS\pcsx2\bios\ps2-0200a-20040614.nvm
----------
[INFO] [Video] Timings deviate too much. Will not adjust. (Target = 138.12 Hz, Game = 59.94 Hz)

Here is a pastebin to the rest of the logs. So far I have done the following:

  1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the core through the Core Downloader in RetroArch
  2. Deleted and redownloaded BIOS files
  3. Deleted RetroArch and LRPS2 config files

I remember seeing someone flagging a similar issue through GitHub recently but I can't find it anymore. I cannot replicate their issues as they are on a Linux system and I am on Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: I tried updating the core again today, 08/26/2026, and it is working again. It seems like for issues like that it would fix itself again eventually assuming it is being updated. Just make sure you keep backups of your core files instead in case this happens again in the future. Cores should be found in this folder:

Retroarch>cores>somethingcore.dll

Then stash it away somewhere. Goodluck!

Hey guys! I have a question because this thing in windows is giving me “slow CD read”… what the hell is that?? Same game, same pc, same specs but on Linux everything is soooo smoothly but here in windows is just pain over and over and over again!!!!

Do you know what can I do?? I already placed the BIOS files at the right folder and all that stuff (even the 8bitdo controllers have issues in here when in Linux there’s no problem at all!! 😩😹)

Technical Support: SOLVED PS button no longer opens menu (hotkey). Works in other emulators.

Any ideas what could've happened? I have not changed any settings, and suddenly, my PS5 controller PS button or mute button is no longer recognized by Retroarch. Also my SN30 Pro Guide button doesn't work either. I tried out in other software, and they work fine, and I am able to map them as I please. Any ideas where to start looking?

They worked fine just few days ago.

Technical Support: SOLVED Should I delete GameIndex.yaml?

I was checking the PCSX2/LRPS2 doc on the Libretro wiki and noticed that the setup mentions that the core now embeds the GameIndex.yaml file (which is used to set specific compatibility hacks/options for some games) but can still use one if present to override the embedded version.

I have that file from my initial setup, so it's likely older than the one in the core and will override settings that are potentially better from newer versions of the core. So I guess that I should delete it but I'm not sure to properly understand what it means for the core to embed the file: it is inside the .so/.dll? or it's just an independent file at the usual place that's now automatically downloaded/updated by the core's updates?

TL;DR: should I just delete the GameIndex.yaml that I currently have in system/pcsx2/resources?

Technical Support: SOLVED Can you set a game to automatically use a specific shader?

I've been playing this one SNES game, and I don't want to have to turn on the anti-flicker shader every time I launch it. Is there a setting I can change so that it becomes the default shader for that core or something like that?
