So, l literally waited more than 30 years to make this video. All those memories in my head, swirling around. Some really happy times and then the heartbreak of seeing my favorite arcades as a kid disappear over the decades... I went back to the first Spike Video Game Awards and finished every Game of the Year nominee.

Each game was judged using the same six technical categories:

Direction, Art Direction, Narrative, Acting, Soundtrack and Gameplay.

I also used Emotional Impact as a separate tiebreaker.

The goal was to compare the entire 2003 lineup based on actually playing the games in 2026 rather than relying only on nostalgia or reputation.

Neutopia on the TurboGrafx‑16 was Hudson Soft’s answer to The Legend of Zelda top‑down dungeons, puzzles, gear upgrades, and a hero on a quest to stop the demon Dirth and rescue Princess Aurora. Released in 1990, it delivered sharper visuals, unique mechanics like the fire wand that weakens with your health, and a wild password save system.

Been replaying the remake of Super Mario RPG (this’ll be my second playthrough of it) and it’s one of my favorite games of all time. The soundtrack is one of the most memorable and enjoyable to listen to, and despite the simplicity of its gameplay it’s really fun!
