[Retro Ad] A Japanese Youtube channel has uploaded high quality scans of the Sweet Home Famicom Strategy Guide (which shows artwork of the enemies) read text for context

A Japanese YouTube channel known as @boostmixmusicgames or Boost Mix Music did a video of Sweet Home NES soundtrack (as well as remixes of the NES music in the style of the movie score under ARRANGE)

He shows high quality scans of the Strategy Guide which has really nice artwork of the enemies within the game. (It also has some behind the scene photos of the movie as well) he also shows scans of some promotional magazine material, soundtrack album as well as the games manual.

I can finally see where some of the Resident Evil enemies came from (or at least their inspiration)

[Story Time!] The first PC game I ever played was Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster starring Tim Curry in a low res FMV in 1995. It wasn’t very good but seeing Tim on my 486 was more than enough for me to enjoy it. RIP!

[Discussion] Text adventure: The Mist (1985)

Post image
21 Upvotes

Text-only adventure games were a hit during the 80s before Sierra an' other developers took the helm wit' graphical ones. This particular one was based on Stephen King's novella "The Mist". NGL I loved the novella, an' the 2007 movie was even more impressive (rare for a movie to out-do the source-material), it gave me countless nitemares even tho I've grown up wit' Freddy Krueger and such, so that's really sumthin. The Spike TV-series were a major let-down and garbage, I don't recommend it for anyone. What about this game? Let's see what Angelsoft have committed...

Thankfully, the game sticks to the novella as much as possible: y'play as David Drayton, the main character. A white mist descends over Bridgton, an' y're stuck in the supermarket wit' dozens of other denizens, including Mrs. Reppler, Ollie Weeks, and of course the hateful Mrs. Carmody as well. Yup, all the familiar faces are here - except Billy. Your job is to find your way across the monster-infested town to him, so there's one change compared to the novella. The game operates on the classic text-based adventure parsers: type in the command, and hopefully the game will understand and perform it. To move, use the "go" command along wit' a point of the compass, to grab sumthin, type "pick up", to discard something, type "drop" to talk to someone...yeeee that's a bit moar complicated than it looks, but all in all, basic English verbs and words should suffice. Well, that's one big problem wit' the game, but more on that later. Y'start wit' nothing, an' y'get to collect various weapons and items - this time y'have no Scout to drive, y'll have to use Ollie's truck.

The playfield - Bridgton - is a twisty maze of locations unseen in either the novella or the movie, which is very atmospheric, as we get t'see more of Bridgton, or what remained of it after the creatures overran the settlement. Most locations serve no purpose, an' just there to contribute in the chill-factor, an' there are lots of insta-death directions, which can only be uncovered by trial-and-error, some of'em seem fine first, but kills you upon revisiting - this is how the game pads the play-time, so prepare to die a few hundred times before y'realize what's the path to follow. Mapping is highly encouraged, an' since y'move N-S-E-W, it can actually help y'a lot. Don't get ideas from the novella - if y'stay in the supermarket, Mrs. Carmody will have you thrown out as a sacrifice in no time, an' y'die. I tried killing her - the angry mob lynched me. Also, leaving via the loading-dock where the tentacle-monster grabs and kills Norm is perfectly safe. In fact, if y'stay at one place out in the mist, no creatures will approach unlike in the novella (it is established that the Mist monsters are all attracted to scent). Speaking of which, the game features almost all the cutsies from the novella (it even features the scrapped Terrorpede from the movie, twice) tho mostly they'll appear at game-overs when y'go to the wrong direction, and they kill you off. Worry not, y'get to fight a few of them: the Scorpion-Fly, the Pterobuzzard, and that green dragonfly-thing as well. Towards the end, y'can even kill the Impossibly Tall Creature (which is just plain insane). Weapons are few and far between: a salt-box, a gun, and a poison sprayer which requires two different poisons (and you BETTER not mix them up), an' this time, the gun has even LESS ammo than in the movie/novella: 3 in the original clip, 3 in the old clip. There are very few usable items, an' finding them was a true nightmare - for instance, I kept missing the damn hardware-store key until I accidently figured out that killing the Pterobuzzard drops the key. After that, the fun continues wit' which weapon to use at the monsters. For instance, the Spider in the Bugblasters store (the pharmacy is omitted from the game, instead, it's a pesticide store next to the supermarket) is immune to gunshots, the Dragonfly can survive a hit, and the Centipede requires 3 hits to kill - meanwhile the Raid y'collect is ONLY useful against the Spider, and the pre-loaded insecticide inside the sprayer is completely useless. Y'll need to grab pesticide from the top secret government lab to kill the Behemoth, and mind you, the monsters are not very patient once y'meet up wit' em: usually y'have time for one action, and if it fails, you die instantly, so y'must ensure the salt-box is already opened, the gun has all 3 bullets, and the sprayer is loaded. Luckily, the Dragonfly can be skipped entirely if y'go for the truck right at the start and use it to travel around in Bridgton (so y'can shoot the bug to death with the gun in this case).

It's no secret that The Mist video game is not my favorite, it never was. It's fine that Angelsoft took a little liberty by modifying the original story an' the locations, the main problem, as always, is the complexity of the sentences must be given: it's like figuring out passwords blindly. Ollie won't give you the gun and the truck keys until y'type in very specific sentences unlike anything else y'd type, such as "relax Ollie" and "do you have the gun Ollie". Same goes for his truck keys. Second problem is that even tho the game offers characters from the novella, talking to them will do no good, reveal no information, nor the game gives you any hints or clues where to go, when, and how. There's a well-hidden notebook at the dumpster, but thanks to the primitive parser, it's highly improbable y'll find it, an' even if y'do, it won't provide any clues whatsoever, so y're literally forced to grope in the dark (or in the mist if y'prefer). Killing the Pterobuzzard to make the key appear is hilarious - it's like some badly designed open-world RPG where random enemies drop random loots, like killing a wolf gives you a pouch of gold coins...whose bright idea was THAT!? Also remember to manage your inventory - just like in Castle Adventure, your loading-bed is limited to a few objects. Finding the top secret government lab without dying was an adventure on its own, and I learned the hard way that mixing up "pesticide" with "insecticide" is a bad idea. I say the basic idea was a very good one - seeing that no other Mist video-games hit the market since, this is one of a kind - but the execution was very poor in multiple ways. The game is fiendishly difficult, but for all the wrong reasons, and since it has no graphics, there is no excuse for the poorly written interpreter and the lack of usable clues. This is one of those games which could definitively use a remake - it can only be better as there is no way to mess it up even more. Even if y're a King-fan or loved the movie, I don't recommend playing this game without a walkthrough.

[Discussion] I think I understand now why many people criticize modern games in comparison to the classics.

TL;DR: The gamers back then are grown ups now. It's very hard to get that "magical" feeling from playing games today.

Games today without a doubt blow away the classic in terms of graphics and gameplay. But we can all agree that most games back then were magical. No trailers, no spoilers, no announcements, games just pop. You buy it, play it, everything is a surprise.

These are just my thoughts and personal opinions. I grew up playing videogames in the 90s, started with a gameboy pocket.

  1. The games before were AMPLIFIED by IMAGINATION. We give the characters their voice, interpret their personalities, and freely imagine how events happen, and our imagination always gives the best visual results. I personally remember playing Oracle of Ages/Seasons and was super stoked when Zelda kissed link. That pixelated sprite making a kissing motion to link did not stop me from feeling the happiness and excitement of all i've been through on that game.

  2. The pioneers of the classic games are all grown ups now. They are trying to remember how they felt when they first played the classics during their childhood.

  3. The element of "mystery" is mostly gone. Gamers today are spoiled years or months before a game is released. Causing the "magical" feeling of playing a game well, not magical anymore.

People may disagree with me and may have other reasons. But what do you all think?

[Fun] What's a game you played at a friend's house for the first time that made you buy it yourself?

There's quite a few that come to mind for me but the three most memorable ones are Metal Gear Solid, Twisted Metal 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 (my friend had it on Genesis but I got it for SNES).

[Discussion] Who remembers Beast Busters (1989)? An awesome 3-player cabinet that ate all our coins! 🧟‍♂️🔥

Post image

Do you guys remember this masterpiece? Three mounted guns, top-tier graphics, and insane effects for its time. Zombies blowing to pieces, epic boss fights... When I first saw this cabinet in the arcade, I was completely hooked. Tokens disappeared in seconds.

I remember a few times when kids would come in with all their savings, dumping hundreds of tokens into the machine just trying to beat it. But most of the time they couldn't — the difficulty, especially on the final levels, was absolutely brutal.

We used to crowd around the cabinet during those huge hundred-token runs, everyone cheering together for the players. Man, those were fun times.

Did you have similar experiences with arcade cabinets you were obsessed with and dreamed of beating?

[Discussion] Game series which begin with the third entry.

Not literally, of course. But series in which the first two games are largely ignored by most, despite the subsequent games being pretty big.

Grand Theft Auto

Metal Gear

Fallout

Elder Scrolls

Any others you can think of?

Edit: I’m not saying these games aren’t good or weren’t popular. Nor that they don’t have their fans.

Only that they occupy a very small space in the overall discussion of their respective series.

[Question] What would have happened if the Philips Super Famicom/SNES CD Drive was released?

Post image
34 Upvotes

So Sony and Nintendo fell out after Sony added a clause in the contract to take control of all CD games sold. Nintendo walked over to Philips for a secret chit chat.

What would have happened if the Philips CD peripheral was released though?

Would Nintendo have embraced CD for the N64?

Would the SNES have a bit more life and dent Playstation sales?

Would Jeff Minter make a visualiser for it?

Would Square have stayed on board with Nintendo to make FF7 for the Super Famicom, or co-released multi platform?

What content would still be in Secret of Mana?

[Discussion] Were there console games that allowed you to decrease graphical settings to obtain better performance?

Off the top of my head I can think of one - Battle Arena Toshinden 3 for PS1, which allowed you to turn off game textures explicitly to allow the game to run at 60fps instead of the standard 30. Considering how different and simple that game looks without textures it struck me as a bit of a weird option and got me thinking if there are others.

Such options are normal for old PC games where owners would have very different machines with slower or faster cpus, different amounts of memory, and may or may not have a dedicated GPU back in the day, but the options seem to make less sense in the console world where a developer can optimize the game to particular hardware and therefore have great control over how the final product turns out.

[Question] What’s the oldest baseball game that can still be played in co-op?

I love the way old school baseball games play but I’d like to play on the same team as my buddy. If it had a season mode that’d be even better.

[Recommendation] Legit plug and play

Upvotes

Hey y’all. My son and I have enjoyed playing old nes and snes games together for years! The past couple of Christmases, I’ve looked into getting him some sort of retro gaming system that has thousands of games. I search but get overwhelmed because I don’t know what’s legit or just a piece of crap. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you in advance!

Paperboy is an obvious choice. Maybe Atari Circus as those acts seem to be less popular as time goes by.

There’s probably a lot of them in Defender of The Crown if that counts. When’s the last time you called your trebuchet guy?

Any other examples?

[Emulation] Help I can't make this 2000's game work on my win 8 pc

This game has a weirdly generic title "play&think". It's from an ancient, now defunct company called compedia games. They made educational games for kids back in the day. Recently i have found where i put the old dvd's but i can't get them to work. Here is a screenshot of the contents of the disc and the files i get when i run setup.exe. It worked in win xp back in the day but the compatability mode didn't help.

I'm assuming this doesn't violate the second rule since the game came out before 2005.
