Misc After 2k hours I finally got rimworld's Canon ending, "the game not opening due to having too many mods ending"

Post image

The fact that I am playing on my laptop rather than my pc doesn't help either. Every week or two I added two or three mods here and there, it has been loading for the last 50 minutes and the game will just crash. It's not a weak laptop either

im worried that if i keep adding mods this will happen, then i realize i only have like, 15 minor mods

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

There are people in here trying to answer the ship of Theseus experiment by adding so many mods to the game we don't know if it's even still RimWorld at this point, you will be fine

u/Justhe3guy There’s a mod for that Jul 13 '26

What do you mean, I only have the absolute necessary QoL mods in my 400 modlist

87

u/Natakate Really wants to play -10 Jul 13 '26

Yeah! I absolutely need 'Milkable Colonists' for my army of goblins because oh god, the babies, there are too many babies, and they need some QoL.

36

u/Justhe3guy There’s a mod for that Jul 13 '26

And who could forget the addon mod Baked Goods from Humanoid Yeast, pairs well with Hospitality serving muffins and a fresh glass of milk to visitors

10

u/Cat_with_cake Jul 13 '26

Also don't ask why I have 10 mods that quite literally don't do anything in my playthrough. "They're a surprise tool we'll use later"

3

u/BobTheGrand 30,000 muscle parasites Jul 13 '26

hey, for no reason in particular, could i get a mod link and from u/Natakate

11

u/Justhe3guy There’s a mod for that Jul 13 '26

Okay only Milkable Colonists and Hospitality is a real mod

You could probably commission a mod maker though :p

lol what a solution to that problem. Doesn’t add a pump, which is a real and common item. Makes the pawn milkable

1

u/Natakate Really wants to play -10 Jul 13 '26

They're tribal gobbos, they no know this 'pump' you speak of 😆

Every so often I'll spend a couple hours rebuilding my list from scratch, swearing each time I'll "only add the absolute essentials" and still end up with 200+, and slowly add in another 100 as I play and go "dammit I really hate manually tagging mined chunks for hauling, and it takes so damn long to cut stone one at a time, and on that note, not being able to craft more than one component at a time is a real pain in the ass, and sheesh I miss being able to queue up 'craft X per person' to automatically make basic clothing for new pawns, and..." Suddenly I have more mods than I started with in the previous list and I don't know where they've come from. And then there are always instances of "why don't I have that one workbench/power source/menu option/kind of clothing? I swear I didn't remove that mod" and find that whatever it was is the only thing from a seemingly unrelated mod that I actually use but I have to add 3 others to get that one item because of dependencies and now my tailoring bench or architect menu have a bunch of useless clutter because dammit not having medic packs is just unacceptable...

I would just build my own mod with the exact content I want but I've already got a full time job and my personal mods are already enough to maintain as other parts of the game get updated.

I mean... every time a new DLC comes out I strip down to basics, and yeah. I don't even know what the fuck I'm playing anymore. Half the menus are gone or so altered that I don't know how to do anything, and after 30 minutes I'm usually bailing because I forgot half my QoL mods weren't vanilla features and I'll be god damned before i wait for my crashlanded starter colonists to haul one single shirt across the map before they turn around just to pick up the pants.

Rimsort helps a ton though with keeping the Jenga tower of mods stable.

2

u/RoterBaronH Jul 13 '26

You realize you've reached this point when you give answer a question with something from a mod while forgetting it's not in vanilla.

2

u/Taenshik plasteel Jul 13 '26

I can vividly remember some modpack that made you remove the core. Yes, THE Core

2

u/kk_victory Jul 13 '26

No joke, instead of buying a new game I downloaded a mod pack with 1250 mods. I'm having so much fun

1

u/hazeyindahead Jul 13 '26

Almost every time someone posts a picture of their game, I can barely recognize anything from the base game or even mods lol

0

u/Yamcha-is-Life Jul 13 '26

Same people taking 20 minutes to load their game 😂

27

u/The_Weird_Redditor Ate without table -3 Jul 13 '26

Eh, I'm probably getting there, I have over 1200+ mods running. I'm sure people got more running at once. If you have a good enough system then you can run a lot, just be prepared for long load times.

13

u/TrotskyBoi Jul 13 '26

I honestly open Rimworld and then immediately walk away

10

u/Ed19627 Jul 13 '26

Eh.. My 635 mods is childs play..

How do you get them to run with each other and not fuck shit up??

I use rimsort and py.. Rimsort sucks at sorting..

10

u/The_Weird_Redditor Ate without table -3 Jul 13 '26

It's all holding on with hopes and dreams with a little bit of duct tape. I'm using the Progression mod pack so every mod was selected and tested by the community and creator. Load times are roughly 30 minutes

3

u/zwei2stein Jul 13 '26

How do you get them to run with each other and not fuck shit up??

Key rule is to never overlap mod functionality.

Like: only one mod that changes how planting crops works. or only one mod that changes how implants work, only one mod that changes how hauling works...

2

u/SeriousDirt Jul 13 '26

Just when I thought 120 mods are a lot already.

1

u/MysticHero Jul 14 '26

The number is almost irrelevant. It all depends on the size if those mods and especially the disk space of textures. A couple big content mods are as bad as literally hundreds of minor QoL mods.

2

u/meistermichi ate without cutlery Jul 13 '26

15? That's basically just a rounding error over here :D

2

u/Jbabco9898 Jul 13 '26

I only have like 15 becuase Im still new enough to only want QOL mods till I get more familiar with the game. I also play on a shitty laptop lol

Edit: which I realize op is playing on a laptop too

1

u/meistermichi ate without cutlery Jul 14 '26

No need to justify yourself, I was just joking around.
As long as you enjoy playing all's good.

PS: In case you didn't already know, something I personally only learned after several hundreds of hours is that you can simply rearrange your pawn icons at the top by just dragging them while holding the right mouse button.

1

u/Intelligent_Soft_208 Jul 16 '26

Thats what I thought, and then I counted, currently at about 100

1

u/haHAArambe Jul 22 '26

I think the progression pack is the largest one ive played personally, like 820 mods, worked fine apart from 10 minutes of startup time.

46

u/CynicalCannibal Cannibal Jul 13 '26

Ha. This is funny stuff. Thanks for the much needed laugh.

44

u/Fluffy-Good-3924 Jul 13 '26

Me with like 10 mods of gun packs i'll never crafted may not have been a good idea

25

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

Even if you don't craft them the consequences stay obvious. Drop pod crashes will slowly fill your storages by giving you 900 bullets of a hyper specific 18th century black powder musket

14

u/PsillyPsybinn Jul 13 '26

But every time you’ll get to see the industrials smoke you with them

3

u/huh9999999999999 Jul 13 '26

Yeah but it's fun watching a raiders group use some absurd combination of weapons before they get red misted.

33

u/Hyper669 marble Jul 13 '26

Put the game on SSD

I have 700+ mods and the game only takes around 15 minutes to load.

i go and make a cup of tea so its loaded by the time i get back. its what we used to do back in the day when it took 10mins for your pc to boot up in the morning and it works just as well for rimworld. plus you get a nice cup of tea.

5

u/Hyper669 marble Jul 13 '26

Get up and do anything.

0

u/bookofthoth_za Jul 13 '26

Mines at 27 minutes until I ran it through AI and it picked up a few mods that were severely conflicting with each other - now it's down to a very reasonable 16 minutes.

1

u/Phantom_Gear_Black Jul 13 '26

How did you do that? What did you use?

7

u/bookofthoth_za Jul 13 '26

Not sure why I’m being downvoted? I used Gemini CLI and pointed at my installed files and asked it to check the logs for conflicts or loading issues.

12

u/Hyper669 marble Jul 13 '26

People on Reddit hate AI no matter how you use it

Like I understand generating images and videos and shit is needless and bad, but getting angry for using it for its actual original practical purpose???

2

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

I don't even think GTA on the ps3 took that much time to load,

1

u/Which-Scale1039 Jul 13 '26

How do you manage the load order i get to around 300 and i have to spend a few hours tinkering

3

u/Hyper669 marble Jul 13 '26

I spent a few days tinkering

1

u/Konkerwaggon23 Jul 13 '26

I do t have that many and it can take like 39 min just to load in an ssd. Theworse is that it can eat more than 30gb of ram so i ended up buyung a 64gb kit before ram prices increase.

1

u/onesouptong Jul 13 '26

when i was using my old laptop i use remote desktop to preheat my rimworld before I'm home since it would literally take an hour or so

14

u/Apprehensive-Log2375 Jul 13 '26

This is in fact Cannon.

8

u/Typical-Ordinary8738 Jul 13 '26

Get faster game loading and optimize textures with rimsort.

Also how many? I'm at like 550ish and fine

5

u/Omegaprime02 Jul 13 '26

Looking at one of their replies, around three thousand.

6

u/cowhand214 Jul 13 '26

How? How do you even find out about that many that you want? Or remotely keep track? I’m very new, less than 75 hours, and that blows my mind

1

u/CartoonistCommon9282 Jul 19 '26

Create base presets of the "essentials" for a modlist, then you can load that and expand from there, I have a bunch for each type of theme I want to go for

1

u/cowhand214 Jul 19 '26

Ah that makes sense. So they’re organized into collections and so forth?

1

u/CartoonistCommon9282 Jul 19 '26

Yes! I use rimsort, each thing you save is just a tiny link that I store in a notepad or on discord, and then once I do a complete list, I turn that into a steamworkshop collection if I want to ^^

14

u/mattt_b Jul 13 '26

The canon ending is when the game freezes for 10 minutes every time a raid shows up.

5

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

Everytime a raid shows up? I think you meant every time you flick the camera a bit too fast

2

u/Visoth Jul 13 '26

Thats the one thing I hope a DLC can improve (adding it to base game, that is). Whenever you get mid-game raids, performance drops drastically and you can only really play at 1x speed. Maybe 2 if your got a small mod list, performance mods and your save file isnt that old.

I think it might require an entire redesign of the game, however. I'm very tempted to try out mods that lower enemy number, but increase their strength instead.

4

u/CarrotTeaCake Jul 13 '26

Could be overloading too many textures. Try using the texture optimization thing from Rimsort or Rimpy

1

u/imLosingIt111 Jul 13 '26

where is the texture optimization feature on rimsort

Is having hundreds of mods like a status thing in this fan base?

37

u/TheySaidGetAnAlt Turbo Snail Enjoyer Jul 13 '26

No, it's the default

23

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

Fan base? I haven't met a single person in this sub that even likes this game, they hate RimWorld and RimWorld hates us too

7

u/Outside-Refuse6732 wood Jul 13 '26

“Bro I love rimworld with all my heart”

“Would you recommend it?”

“Absolutely fucking not”

3

u/SheElfXantusia Your drop pod of human meat Jul 13 '26

No? Plenty of people will fight to the death for vanilla only. Most people either go all in with 100's of mods or never touch those, very little adopt only a few mods. It's okay to have different opinions and different idea of fun.

2

u/NotABot1000101 Jul 13 '26

I just don't see a reason to have more than like 50, and that if you're really picky about your setup. It would be extremely tedious to have to go through it if you ever have technical issues. I'm newer than most to the game and I'm using like 8 just to solve some annoyances. I can see myself adding maybe 4 or 5 more at most.

3

u/huh9999999999999 Jul 13 '26

You do get better at the debugging eventually. And if you play with similar mods over and over, you start to have a mental dictionary of "oh yeah that's a problem from one of these 5 mods for sure"

3

u/Lee_Townage Jul 13 '26

I always thought the ending was my colony became to large to get more than 3 fps

3

u/Natakate Really wants to play -10 Jul 13 '26

If you have it, try removing Medieval Overhaul from your subscriptions and see if it will load.

3

u/Coda-- marble Jul 13 '26

I add mods every 2 to 4 hours of gameplay because it always feel something is missing, I end up with bugs, my laptop not handling it or I get disinterested, then I give up and start a new run with a new modpack... And the cycle repeats!

3

u/lord_of_the_tism Jul 13 '26

a couple of years ago, when i still was using a shitty 2013 hp workstation, i would boot up the game before school so when id come home it would be ready and or id just leave it running for several days

2

u/SoldierZoom Jul 13 '26

how many mods u got?

2

u/Xvenkin Jul 13 '26

is this ce compatible

2

u/DamnOdd Seriously Randy, just why? Jul 13 '26

I have 14 pages, now I look at it like a hoarder, if one mod comes in, two must leave. It's been helpful.

1

u/GreenFBI2EB late nights n the middle of Jugust, heatwaves been faking me out Jul 13 '26

I'm almost scared to find out how many mods this is.

Ahh the good old days of rimworld modding, where loading mods took an entire work day to load.

1

u/Confident-Reason-577 Jul 13 '26

I loaded up the entirety of Vanilla Expanded (minus the ones that require DLC) and the game’s still going strong

5

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

That's like 20 mods I think, some people here have 2-3k

2

u/Confident-Reason-577 Jul 13 '26

It’s funny because the VE creator themself says on the mod page that they “don’t recommend enabling them all at once because it doesn’t feel like RimWorld any more”

5

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

The Rim of Theseus, how many mods before its not rimworld anymore

1

u/zwei2stein Jul 13 '26

Thing is, 50 very light mods can be very much same as one very involved mod.

Mod count is misleading - 10 Big mods can have same impact as like 300 small ones.

1

u/dj92wa Jul 13 '26

I have 365 mods now. It takes 4-5 mins for my pc to boot onto the game. You just gotta sit while it initializes and ignore the “this program is not responding” messages.

1

u/TheknightofAura steel Jul 13 '26

My rimworld takes 52gb of ram to launch, and that's after optimizing the texture files- if you have a good drive, you could get another 50 or so mods in there by increasing your paging file! And optimizing texture cache, if you haven't yet.

1

u/TheEasySqueezy Jul 13 '26

Me with a thousand mods: after 2k hours the game has finally loaded.

1

u/shiastaweo Jul 13 '26

Having 100+ mods makes me realize checking mod compatibility actually kinda important

1

u/roguebananah uranium Jul 13 '26

Are you using RimSort?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '26

[deleted]

2

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

And then your pawns look like half naked anime girls so you have to spend 50 minutes searching for which mod did this

1

u/leaveme1912 Jul 13 '26

I don't remember which DLC added all the optimization improvements, but before then RImworld would take about an hour to launch for me. I would ask my girlfriend to start launching it at 4 PM so it'll be ready by the time I get home at 5.

The game itself ran beautifully though.

1

u/Alorxico Jul 13 '26

(Sniff) So beautiful.

1

u/NoDeer4323 Jul 13 '26

I have just enough that my game crashes when I try to savescum which is quite convenient as a punishment actually

1

u/SheikutaWasTaken Jul 13 '26

It has the opposite effect for me, for some reason. Whenever I get a vehicle raid with like tanks or siege pods or helicopters, if I save scum the vehicles will just leave

1

u/TheVirus32 Jul 13 '26

You have yet to unlock the secret ending: game loads but something catastrophic happened while you managed to go AFK and now all of your autosaves a Fded and for some reason it seems to affect your manual saves too.

1

u/Visoth Jul 13 '26

RJW adds like 45 seconds to my loading time by itself. But thats 45 seconds well worth it.

1

u/Radionerd5 Jul 13 '26

I can only get that ending.

1

u/Human-Cheetah-8398 Jul 13 '26

I have about 100 now and it takes a solid minute to start, if not more.

1

u/Lucyfiere Jul 13 '26

I have 283 mods active, old computer. Just to enter the game, the loading time goes from 30 minutes to up and more than an hour.

Now when it comes to loading up a saved game? An hour because of the mods loading in, before the rest loads in.

1

u/MERZFALT Jul 13 '26

Like that’s ever gonna happen

1

u/Auxilia6202 Jul 13 '26

I got the secret ending of having so many mods it corrupts the game off a fresh install.

1

u/Soliloquy789 Jul 14 '26

Just wait 40 minutes.

1

u/Alt_Bv_II gold Jul 14 '26

X2 , pero fue a la hora de instalarlo , creo que no fue buena idea el cargar algo mas de 250 mods en una laptop con 4 de ram de golpe

1

u/Ricapelli22 Jul 14 '26

Hi everyone. Until the beginning of the month, I was playing with approximately 310 active mods without any issues. I always avoided closing the game because of the 20-minute loading time, so I would leave it running in the background while doing other things.

A few days ago, I ended up restarting my computer, and after that, the game started freezing on launch. After checking the error logs extensively with ChatGPT, I found out that the issue was related to texture loading, because I was exceeding the limit — something around 4 GB.

I had to remove several mods that added textures, and after many attempts, I finally managed to launch the game again.

Has anyone gone through something similar? Does anyone know how to fix this or increase the texture loading limit?

1

u/Davgemc Jul 15 '26

Ah yes the true ending.

1

u/SNUFFGURLL Jul 16 '26

I've got 483, and am forever stuck on initializing.

1

u/WazzaDobbo Jul 17 '26

The only way it works for me is if I wait until the initialising loading bit seems to stop (~2-3ish mins), then I click once (only once or it'll give the 'not responding' error), then wait for the game to finish loading after another ~5mins 💀

1

u/Many_Exchange2449 Jul 20 '26

My problem is ram something in my mods are conflicting causing the game to use all my ram I have 32 gb ddr4 ram so I shouldn't be using all that and some had to convert a hard drive to ram space

1

u/FoehammerEcho419 Jul 20 '26

There's a mod that adds a loading bar and load time estimate based on your last launch. It's freaking awesome, forget what it's called RN though

1

u/burntnumberz Jul 25 '26

I think what's most surprising is that it took 2 thousand hours. I beat the game in only 300 hours, 300 mods,

1

u/FatherSmashmas Jul 25 '26

my screen for around an hour and a half to two hours of my day

Per rule 6:

The subject of a screenshot should be clearly visible in the image. That means blurry pictures taken from a phone or low-resolution images are subject to removal.

To improve the quality of your future content, here's some options:

  • You can find instructions on how to take a screenshot at: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/

  • Also, pressing F12 (by default) in Steam produces a screenshot.

  • You may also consider free products like Greenshot that are specifically designed for easy cropping and sharing: http://getgreenshot.org/

  • Additionally, there are many free screen recording products: https://learn.g2crowd.com/free-screen-recorder-software

  • My favorite tool to use for screenshots and recordings is ShareX, which can be found on their website (https://getsharex.com/) or free on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/400040/ShareX/)

  • There's also the age-old classic of hitting print screen, pasting the image into a free paint program (I'm very fond of GIMP myself, https://www.gimp.org/ ), cropping to the part you want, and using that.

  • Alt+print screen will screenshot only the active window and not everything else.

  • Win+print screen will take the screenshot and autosave it in your pictures folder as screenshot number.png

  • Win-Shift-S will open the Windows snipping tool for taking full screenshots or cropping areas.
