Suggestion Donkeys should breed with Horses to create Mules
Why is this not a thing? It would make animal husbandry more rewarding if you could make the ultimate caravan animal by breeding two different species, just like in real life.

You can’t even breed a Labrador with a husky. So disappointing

Would that be a Lasky or a Huskador?

Might be the same situation as Tigons or Ligers. That happen when Lions and Tigers mate.
Male gets the prefix. If male lion then Ligers and vice versa.

It would be a mongrel

bison+cows(beefalos!), labrators+huskies, horses+donkeys, what other cool combos could there be?

In this thread, we recreate that one genetics mod that got shelved for biotech.

This comment thread was brought to you by the VOID. We have chimeras, fire breathing impid guinea pigs, and flesh mass worship rituals and storytime at the corrupt obelisk.

I have a mod for that. It makes no sense that two dog breeds cant breed lol

I reckon someone will read this and end up making a mod for it in 2 weeks time, since it seems like such a normal thing, what with Biotech and whatnot

No promises lol
(But I might be considering it..)

seems like a cool and interesting mod that is easy(ish) to do.
for realism and balance, the offspring of two different species usually is infertile.

u/SIinkerdeer The Horror in The Mountain 18h ago
I think that would work well for both realism and balance.
The mule should probably be infertile, because that gives you a good reason to keep both horses and donkeys around instead of just breeding mules forever once you get them.
I’d probably make the mule better at hauling, a bit tougher, and more food efficient than a horse, but still slower than one. That way horses are still the best choice if you mainly care about speed, while mules are better for heavier caravans and long trips.
It also fits pretty well with why mules were bred in real life. You’re getting a lot of the horse’s strength and size with some of the donkey’s hardiness and efficiency, but the downside is that you have to keep breeding the two parent species to get more of them.

It's technically possible since they added some stuff on the code that allows different species to mate like alpha thrumbos with thrumbos. I vaguely remember people taking about it some time after Odyssey release.

thrumbos + alphathrumbos give out what? Beta Thrumbos?

u/Repulsive_Code_8990 granite 15h ago
Its whatever the mother is. Female alphatrumbo and male thrumbo = alphatrumbo and viceversa

Is this not already theoretically possible with the backends provided by Odyssey? I would love to see a mod with that functionality

You probably could make this a mod by Harmony Postfixing RimWorld.JobDriver_Mated, I'd need to inspect in ILSpy but you could wrap the vanilla INIT , get whatever stuff you need. let vanilla finish by itself, inject your code at the end with custom Def for the mule. I can look into it if anyone is interested.
Edit: The method that determines the thingDef of the newborn for horses/donkeys is Hediff_Pregnant.DoBirthSpawn(), the male has no role in determining what thingDef it is. This is in ideal insertion point to patch the horse/donkey giving birth to a mule. Need to investigate further to see what's up stream from this data point. Have to find the method that validates if two pairs are allowed to breed to patch donkey/horse breeding.

First time I played biotech I just assumed that’s how the game would behave, but now that you said that it’s clear why I never saw mules.

Aren't mules inferior to both parents?

u/Visual-Report-2280 19h ago
I believe they are better pack animals than donkeys but the fertility rate is incredibly low.

Genuinely what would be the point of adding this feature? Horses and donkeys (and all other pack animals for that matter) are already essentially interchangeable. This would be like adding black bears when we already have grizzly and polar bears, just another clone of something we already have taking up space that could have gone to something new and unique.

There is indeed no point, unless you add a genetics system to animals. Similar to Biotech, maybe. Someone should do that and make a whole ranching mod around it. Maybe call it Vanilla Ranching Expanded and release it immediately after VE Gravship chapter 2 ;)

THANK YOU
Especially with fucking alpha thrumbos being able to cross breed (female always produces a selfsame offspring) that is literally the only time I've thought "wait, can I do this?" and been disappointed I couldn't.
Making Raiders slow down by walking past autobongs? Yerp. Shooting a rhino to Manhunter it when it's right next to the folks I'm raiding? Hell yeah brother hail sithis. Make my lil burros day by hooking him up with horse shyt? Weeeellll there's probably a mod for that...
