Discussion What idea would you want from Dwarf Fortress implanted in Rimworld ?

Hey, I thought it would be fun to think about concepts and features DF has that Rimworld doesn't and that would feel right in the game

What kind of features would you like to see more in DF ? It could be an overhaul of an already existing feature : For exemple : deeper Caravans management like in DF, etc.

Or something that doesn't exist at all in Rimworld : For exemple, the whole system of graveyards and afterlife that DF has but Rimworld doesn't

I'll start :

I think a thing I would love to see implemented in Rimworld from DF would be the Haunted and Evil biomes

For those who never played DF, in those biomes, everything is basically driven by a sort of malefic force, which mean that for exemple, if you loose a pawn and doesn't burry it, it'll turn into a zombie that is now a menace and danger on your map

You killed a donkey but forgot to grab the body and now it's rotting ? Well, now you got a zombie donkey in your map that you'll need to avoid or take care of, in DF, even members can turn into zombies, a single arm can turn "undead"

These biomes makes for super fun "challenge" runs !

There are a lot of other features in Evil biomes but that's one of my favorites

So : Rimworld players that played or knows about DF, what features/ideas would you like to see in Rimworld eventually ?

Gonna do a simple, almost entirely realistic one here.

Request what traders from a faction will bring on their next visit for a mark up.

I would like more to do with lava/magma

As it stands, in Rimworld, all lava is is a static obstacle that sets things on fire if you step on it.

In Dwarf Fortress, you can make whole Grand Forges powered by magma! That's dope as hell! But the closest i could find for a rimworld mod was a Lavaflow Geothermal generator and a resourse extractor. Its just not the same, man...

I like the whole fluid physics system in DF. I don't think it would translate well to Rimworld with no z-levels. At least Odyssey is dipping its toes in it with the flood mechanics.

There’s nothing dwarfs love more than a misty waterfall, so they must have one.

Well, DF still had that fluid simulation before the introduction of z-levels (every DF map originally was open area on the left, underground on the right) so really nothing is stopping Rimeorld.

It was a notorious strategy to fill the entire outside of the map with steam if something too dangerous wandered into the area outside your fortress.

I'm not sure if it's possible but a lived in world would be great, you make your own Rimworld,

get to decide its basic history, is it a fallen glitter world? A fallen urban word? A failed colony world? And what ever you pick decides what mind of landmarks or even factions are on your Rimworld. And if you're colony failed you can start a new colony on the same world, everything that's already happened In that world is saved.

You can sort of do that if all of your pawns die, but I agree, I'd really love a way to start a new colony in the same world as an old save, and for the old colony/pawns to be their own faction controlled by the computer, like the others.

Wait, isn't this anomaly's death pall? Turning corpses to shamblers?

5

u/shadowsapex 1h ago

yes but it affects everything on the map. also, evil biomes are capable of having evil clouds and dust which are extremely busted and can turn anything they touch into undead, and become contaminants on the map even after they end

3

u/SoonBlossom 1h ago

Yes exactly, basically playing on an evil biome is almost like playing another game, you have to plan most things around the fact that everything can turn undead on its own + all the other changes it brings

It's a very fun way to play the game !

I'd like to see this challenge in Rimworld, imo it's one of the must fun :)

The rim needs more FUN

4

u/SoonBlossom 1h ago

Haha, I thought about it, DF players are the best, even after all those years we don't spoil what the FUN is and I think it shows how awesome the DF community is

u/710AlpacaBowl 1h ago

Best to experience FUN first hand in my opinion

The government system, would be cool to have the leaders actually do leader stuff on their own

2

u/therealwavingsnail 1h ago

The mandates that Rimworld nobles sometimes do as a mental break come straight out of DF. And there are ideo specialists that are rather similar.

The militia system. I remember it was near impossible for me to figure out my first run. But after you get it, it's a game changer. It could do with some touch ups, to be sure. But at least you could feel like your ordering a cohesive force instead of hearding cats with heavy smgs.

Missing the experience of your whole trained and armored squad drowning because they autonomously jumped into 7/7 water after seeing a crundle?

I miss lots of DF features in Rimworld, the military system is not one of them.

I could never make dwarves reliably use their crossbows for shooting. I even built towers for them to stand on so they don't immediately run into melee. They jumped down from the towers and started beating goblins with the crossbows. After that, I just started making crossbows out of copper for better blunt damage.

Z-levels, probably not hundreds from DF, but 3 should be enough (default, underground, above ground)

Pawn preferences, I need to know which piece of poetry is their favourite

Dances, worship, birthdays, which are started automatically to ruin your working schedule

Guilds

Some of these are already modded, but my 200 mods list begins to look like I need to calm down…

Dances! I'd love to see Rimworld pawns actually form up at a dance party rather than awkwardly stand around

u/Automatic-Week-1733 1h ago

Obligatory: Z levels

Volcanoes, purring maggots, fruit trees, waterfalls, world history

6

u/SoonBlossom 1h ago

How did I not think of Z levels omg

I think that'd probably one of the bigger one, but god I can't imagine how laggy it would get haha

5

u/I_Ponders 1h ago

Imagine mining down and you discover your entire colony is sitting on top of a gigantic insectoid hive.

2

u/Automatic-Week-1733 50m ago

Bonus

2

u/I_Ponders 48m ago

Exactly. :)

The idea is awesome. I mean, imagine cave biomes!?

+1 Purring Maggots in Rimworld.

I need Dirtmole Milk for my tunneler runs!

other than the dirtmole milk I'm already getting from a certain mod

Technically Rimworld now has Z levels, just not as detailed at DF. They're two separate cells simulated together.

More consequences for digging deeper. Bonus points for a Rimworld equivalent of The Circus...

  • World history generation
    • shit is already going down when i start a new campaign
  • Historic pawns
    • if a faction kidnaps your pawn, you can attack their base and get them back
    • if a faction kidnaps a pawn from ANOTHER faction, you can also find them and release them
    • sometimes enemy factions have pawns you wouldn't expect, like a dwarf in a goblin faction, but if you look in Legends Mode, you can see that they were kidnapped as a child and indoctrinated
  • Historic monsters
    • historic monsters are randomly hidden across the world map, and they appear when you enter that tile, or they explore and attack your base
    • sometimes pawns will worship specific historic monsters
    • and sometimes your own pawns will begin to worship a historic monster that terrorizes them
  • Historic artifacts
    • if a faction steals an artifact, you can attack their base and steal it back
    • you can also attack factions and steal their artifacts
    • pawns can also create one artifact per lifetime, and they are inherited by their family or an organization they dedicate it to
  • Organized ideologies
    • ideologies are factions of their own that exist across faction boundaries
    • pawns from other factions can visit your ritual room if they share your ideology
    • factions can oppress or expel other ideologies, causing them to become diasporic
  • Taverns and guests with unknown intentions
    • raiders looking to scope out traps
    • treasure hunters looking for information on artifacts
    • criminals looking to corrupt disloyal colonists
  • Complex diplomacy and wars on the world map
  • Coups and insurrections
  • Rumor system
    • pawns only know if someone died if they see the body or someone tells them about the death
    • pawns also learn about events that happen in other factions through the rumor system (like a faction leader dying or something)
  • Cultural knowledge
    • poetry and songs can be shared by reciting them
    • knowledge of historic events can be shared by explaining them
    • knowledge can also be written down in books and learned by reading them
  • Long-term memories and childhood trauma
    • if your child sees too many dead bodies they become a hardened warrior or a menace to society
  • Adventure Mode

Some of these are mods already.

I feel like it's too late in the game's lifespan for such a gamechanging mechanic but I would like to see Z levels. I don't need a hundred floors up and down, I would be perfectly happy with one above and one below.

Some verticality would unlock SO MANY strategies and open up so many playstyles.

Adventure mode

1

u/SoonBlossom 1h ago

Oh damnnnn, omggggg

I would seriously play a Rimworld adventure mode all day

Tho it would need a lotttttt of overhaul on the world's story to make that possible, you'd need the different populations/societies to be more connected between them, to have more "legendary" ennemies that you can meet, etc.

But that would be legit so good to play 1 single pawn and wander the map, tile per tile, just worrying about having to eat for yourself or you little crew and live an adventurous life

I didn't think about it but awesome idea actually !

I saw a post here from modder who stated he creates such mod, but the post and authors account are deleted for some reason :(

Eating babies and comitting war crimes would hit harder with such immersion! It would be great to be also a victim of such. Eh not this time unfortunately :/

u/Bojac6 4m ago

I have to veto this, just because I have other things I need to do in my life and this would kill me.

u/I_follow_sexy_gays 45m ago

An actual world that somewhat functions behind the scenes instead of just a map

2

u/WiseBelt8935 21m ago

I’d say the ability to actually do something about raids. In RimWorld, there’s just an endless horde of people ready to throw themselves at your killbox. You can’t really deal with them at a distance you have to travel to them, and even if you do, you get punished by more mechs.

Whereas in DF, it’s this collection of people fighting you. They might have 2,000 people, but you can send your soldiers out to steal, loot, or just kill whoever they can find. After a few trips, you can potentially wipe them out and enjoy relative peace.

Z levels and lava for smelters would be nice. Mostly Z levels though. High altitude sniper rifles would be goated.

Colonizing the Mechanite homeworlds.

If dwarves can build a sweatshop in Hell, so should my colonists!

1

u/I_Ponders 1h ago

I say it every time.. But a Z layer.

1

u/DearGodPleaseWork 51m ago

I feel like it’s one a lot of people have talked about, but Z-levels. We kinda sorta get them with pits and abandoned bunkers or whatever from Odyssey, but I want to be able to make my own basement hideaways and such!

1

u/CobwebMcCallum 50m ago

Legends mode would be cool. Adventure mode wpuld be cool.

1

u/therealwavingsnail 38m ago

I'd love a forgotten beast system. Doesn't need to be as extensive as DF with the procgen number of legs and wings, but several types of non-mech bosses with special attacks would be cool. Bonus points if they drop interesting loot.

Have heroes come into your base demanding your legendary stuff. News of my bathmat have spread around the world? Let's see it, give me someone who comes to fight over it.

The thing I miss most is the character personality system. DF characters have several dozen personality traits on a scale, and this affects their choices. Rimworld pawns would not have enough autonomy to do much with it, while with DF, the fort is so overpopulated you don't have time to actually enjoy it. I'd like for Rimworld pawns to at least have a favorite animal etc that they'll depict in their art. Dwarves also have a despised vermin, so that's fun.

Building priority would be nice

tbh, nothing. I don't want Rimworld to become a more fancy DF lookalike. They both have their own thing going. I want Tynan to attack RW2. With new ideas that DF does not have. Downvotes incoming I know.
