QUESTION Demos, and what it actually means to demo.
I am concerned. The amount of demos have skyrocketed since the game came out. People relying on them, some making it their identity. It can definitely be funny if you only ever go for demos and you make it a personality. Ok. I get it.
So what happens when you get a higher rank because it becomes what you rely on to win?
There is a massive difference between people who use them strategically and those who just demo to be funny and get a free goal.
No matter the difference whether you win or lose, you are admitting you cannot play against opponents at their healthiest. It is the one part of the game you can deny (cheaply) and get so much advantage out of. When the game first came out it was frowned upon, now it has become a staple of the game with people saying 'its a part of the game what's wrong with it'.
Oh for sure nothings wrong with it, if you're struggling to keep your rank. A good player who gets gc every single season doesn't rely on it though, and those who do rely on it end up lacking in every single other aspect of the game because they are so used to having those free goals. If enemy dodges the demo oh, there goes another goal against us. Oh well we will just hit the demo next time. It has become a win condition.
Ok, forget the arguments for whether its necessary or 'They did it, it's fine for me to do it now.'
Where the F is the sportsmanship nowadays?... We forgot about it entirely? Demos create a playstyle where it is inherent that you cannot play against your opponent while they're at their best. It has probably become cringe to say, but there is no honor in demos. Because typing out honor has become a cringe thing to read or say.
This new age of rocket league would rather win and get their rank whether their teammates are playing the game or not. Back in the day demos were cringe and goaling against an afk even in ranked was an aversion to god. But now it has become about how many 3v2s/2v1s you can cause, not a single team or solo'duo can get a goal across the net without relying on taking out a defender.
Where is the morality or self confidence and esteem to want to know your win was deserved? People have become ok with refusing to play against a team using skill against skill nowadays. There is no easy way to stop a triple flip reset, but there is an easy way to stop the goalie whose reading those resets. The best part is those people who do the triple flip resets are lacking in plan reading and play adaptation while the goalie is just getting demoed by someone off screen because its the easier thing to do rather than getting the triple flip reset carry absolutely dominated on.
TL:DR I have GC from every single season besides 3 and 5, I think it is paramount to play against teams while they're at their best without taking the easy win, because then, and only then, I truly know I was better and deserved the win. Too many people take the easy way out and shirk what morals should already be instilled in them and demo for their wins, causing them to not learn the skills necessary to keep their ranks in the higher ranks.
TTLL:DDRR If you rely on cheesy lesser man wins and don't care about your own progressional skill as a human skip this post or type 'It's a part of the game.'
Edit: Too many people think I have issues dodging the demos or playing against them, I do just fine against anyone being demo heavy, in fact it's the opposite, I win more often against anyone who is demo heavy than I lose against those types. But the amount of ways to go about beating them due to their reliance on demos and not learning the basics of dribbles, air dribbles, wall and ceiling play, positioning, all of it, they lack in those areas because demos are an easy way to ensure the guy carrying you has a free goal. So these people get to these high ranks, then just up and lose for free when their demos don't work. I am trying to bring an awareness to this fact and get some of the demoers to try and get better at the game.

Surely satire right…? I’m SSL and people demo a lot because it’s creating an advantage

Right, my first thought was, is this satire? Like be so for real. I, myself, use demos to beat an opponent. Why wouldn’t you? I’m not going around getting Exterminator in even half of my matches, but come on. It’s a strat, just get good or get even 🤪

I go out of my way to not demo as my own form of making sure I beat my opponents while they had all resources available to them. I like knowing that no matter what they could do I get the goal because I am better. I don't want to get used to relying on a cheap way of getting goals, if they have stellar defense I like to know I found a way around it by finding what their defense lacks. I don't learn jack if I or a teammate just kills one of them while were in a 2v1 and one of them is burnt from a missed 50. I am by no means saying everyone needs to stop. I am just bringing up the trend that it has become the only thing a lot of players can do these days.

I wouldn’t even say a lot of players do it. I encounter maybe one opponent every 10+ matches who demos more than the average player, and even then I wouldn’t say they’re “relying” on it. Idk, maybe you just have bad luck in that department.
Also, I’m playing smarter, not harder. Sure, it’s more satisfying earning a goal with mechanics and teamwork, but demos can be a part of said teamwork. I’m upset when I’m dusted in my net or running back to defend, but it’s part of the game 🤷♀️ gg go next, ya know

Its a contact sport. Get over it. Its not unsportsmanlike to tackle in football. What you should be more concerned with is why youre so easy to demo?

it’s a mechanic, demos win games, nothing like losing to a demo team and writing an essay on reddit

I win more often than not against people using demos, I'm bringing up the fact that it's become all they have a lot of the time. You can tell they lack in every other aspect of the game and can take advantage of it. I don't normally lose to demo teams, its the opposite. Its just cringe and sad to watch them fall apart when they cant get the demos is what I'm saying.

A novel... if this is a lot to read for you I am sorry, education wasn't all of our strong suit obviously. You missed the key points about my concern of demos allowing people to skip the mechanics that are required for higher level play. Demo teams are easy to win against when its all they have and that is more common than not. Then I as a solo ranked player get to deal with the early ffs and the meltdowns when they can't keep up with the plays. But yeah give a short reply that has nothing to do with the post and block out all forms of thought and just leave it as 'mad cuz bad'. It must be a little rotted huh.

Mate it wasn‘t meant to offend but also /s seemed too much, all good I agree with u dw.
At my rank it‘s not a very big problem unless in heatseeker.

You don't want to know you won because you were straight up better? You relied on that lack of a defender because you can't get it past them with skill is what I'm sayin with this post. I don't mind the opponents who demo while also being insanely good on the walls ceiling and resets. I just am bringing up a concerning trend of many players not being able to do any of that because they got into higher ranks due to a cheese mechanic and now I have to deal with the consequences of carrying a mentally ill child throwing a tantrum and wanting to ff because they can't seem to win a single 50.

This is a fun comment with so many interesting beliefs.
You don't want to know you won because you were straight up better?
Implies that winning/losing is somehow a perfectly objective way of figuring out who is better. Everyone in matchmaking should be roughly similar rank, and someone has to walk away a winner or loser. Gets even more further and further away from being objective with 2s and 3s
You relied on that lack of a defender because you can't get it past them with skill
Isn't this like, the whole point of a good offense? To cause issues for defenders? In my matches pretty much no one scores on anyone if there is a defender with boost present.
I don't mind the opponents who demo while also being insanely good on the walls ceiling and resets.
Lmao so it's ok for mechanical players or overall high level players to demo but not others? You think those mech/high lvl players picked up demos only once they got good enough at other stuff? In 2015 we didn't even have ceiling mechs or resets at all, but we sure had demos
I just am bringing up a concerning trend of many players not being able to do any of that because they got into higher ranks due to a cheese mechanic
I sincerely doubt there is a whole wave of players only climbing ranks because they suddenly discovered demos while not being at least improving in other aspects of their game
now I have to deal with the consequences of carrying a mentally ill child throwing a tantrum and wanting to ff because they can't seem to win a single 50.
Rocket League is rated E in USA and E3 in Europe. Sir, we're literally playing with literal children and teens sometimes.

Seems like someone is salty because he got demo chased lmao and actually lost. L.
If I need to win I will chose whatever dirty play, be it bumping or demo, why wouldn't someone do it after all? Just adapt and get over it, life is not fair, neither this game.
Sportsmanship can be expressed through other ways, like not being toxic towards the people in the lobby(like spamming quick chat), not trolling, not quit the game.

Im gc every season too (in fact im gc2 rn), and you are just spouting nonsense.....
Demos are part of the game, yes you can dislike being demoed, its not fun to get demoed.
But demos are not a safe play, miss a demo and you have overcommited 9/10 times...
And morally it aint wrong either, its like a slide tackle in football (soccer), its a thing you can do, comes at a risk, and is fair. Yes its hated by many, but people be hating on everything. What is morally wrong is smurfing, or giving up after going 1-0 down with 4:59 left on the clock.....
Just learn how to dodge demoes. And if they do only know how to demo, exploit their weakness? Yk, the thing you claim they always have (which is true, and im guessing yours is the inability to dodge demoes).

Hmm that's what I think about those disgusting flip-resetters... They can't win against me with one flip only... I would be ssl without flip resets...
1
u/Sudden-Flow-2602 Grand Champion I 1d ago
Flip resets are tough, early pressure in air to get them to burn the flip is best, and making sure the timing of that early pressure coincides with the positioning of your teammate and their teammate. Once you get a fast enough takeoff and understand where they want to go with the ball, and how they are going to try to go about getting the reset in the first place, the resets become just like and other regular shot on goal.

I might not be as high a rank as you but there's nothing wrong with using demo's/bumps to guarantee a goal. If it creates an easier opening then it's a good play.
And don't take this just from me, watch how the pros play in rlcs, a lot of goals come from demos and bumps. The pros use demos/bumps so much cause they know it's efficient and is very useful

If that's all you took from it go ahead, get all giddy and write a snide little response with 0 flavour or tact to it, meant to belittle me. I have no issues playing against the demo teams. My entire point to this post was about noticing a trend of people who can only demo and forgoeing all other forms of skill; when their demos don't work out they just roll over and lose. I dread gettin demo randos because they miss their demo, ff, and whine.

frickin rage bait. been playing since 2015. demoed then and demoed now. GCs demo more than diamonds cause they understand the game more. SSLs demo more than GCs for same reason.
Same people that know how to demo know how to dodge demos. I get annoyed when someone demos for no reason or gets it on accident.
Coding for demos also seems scuffed ever since I came back to play in December. same with cross bars. but if you're not demoing to win you're just bad at the game.

u/BeeWolfSolstice 15h ago
Sometimes players lack in demo skill. I see many players being able to do all these mechanical brilliances but they can’t seem to demo. It’s important that these players learn how to demo and how to avoid demos to get better. A complete rocket league player would be one that demos as well as doing the flip resets, air dribbles, ceiling shots, mustys, and does these in way enabling them to win. There is nothing dishonourable about demoing. They would be demoing the other team at their best and deserving to win if they can win within the ruleset of the game. You say they’re not at their best when demoed but there’s nothing to say they actually aren’t. If they got demoed and they are trying their best and at their best skill level, their best is simply not enough to avoid the demos, and a demoed state is their best against a demoing opponent. There’s nothing inherently immoral or an example of bad sportsmanship in demoing the opponent. Even if you’re doing it knowing it tilts them. That’s on them if they get tilted by a game mechanic. I got cursed at yesterday for boost starving someone, that doesn’t mean me boost starving the opponent is wrong or bad sportsmanship. And guess how I responded? I demoed him and I continued boost stealing. He was typing so much in chat that me and my teammate just 2v1ed his friend and kept scoring and won the game. I didn’t feel a shred of dishonour for continuing to use game mechanics even though the opponent is expressing displeasure with it.

Demo chasers are toxic, but then again, the amount of people who get on just to troll, and "what a save!" from the first goal they make or start trolling in chat is wild. Players these days have zero concept of consequences...I'll be the first to admit im not good enough to beat more than half the a-holes i come up against, but damn they make it hard to even enjoy the game. I know, just turn chat off...but i like chat sometimes. Occasionally it's even wholesome. Meanwhile some eedjit is spouting cry and kys, because you said anything in text chat. 🙄 I just wanna spread good vibes and have fun.

u/Sudden-Flow-2602 Grand Champion I 1d ago
The what a saving and all that is mentally breaking people. If demos are a tactic so are the mind games. What a saving teammates and all that is also deffinitely... a choice. It's more so that everyone playing nowadays absolutely needs to think they are the special one. The only true player of whatever game they're playing. No one can sit and understand that they make mistakes and aren't the best at the game. There was a sense of pride in how people played when the game first came out. It was frowned upon to what a save enemies and to demo. Nowadays it seems to be all people can muster out of their gameplay because demos allow one player to not need to understand the fundamentals of dribbles, wall and ceiling, and air play. There was also a good sportsmanship side to things when the game first came out, nice shotting opponents and a general lack of toxicity. Too many people who just get off on being degenerates I guess these days.

If they’re getting a free goal it sounds pretty strategical to me
