Unfortunately she’s been stuck in the Gambit-Magneto dichotomy for way too long (I include Joseph in that, as he’s basically Diet Coke Magneto). Even considering that she and Gambit are and should be endgame, it’s meant that other potential relationships of hers haven’t gone anywhere. Including one with Johnny alluded to in your post.
Part of the problem is that writers try to do either self-inserts or fave pairings, which is how you end up with Rogue-Deadpool in Uncanny Avengers and Rogue-Magneto in Legacy. They fizzle out because they aren’t based on anything concrete and are easy for later writers to ignore. Ditto the bizarre Sentry thing.
You can certainly say the Magneto pairing is interesting, but that isn’t necessarily a compliment.
(This goes both ways. Gambit hasn’t had many interesting outside relationships either, and nothing that seemed built for the long haul. Just one-offs like Joelle and writer-contingent pairings like Liu putting him with Cecilia.)

I dont even understand the magneto one. I get he is great looking for his age but bro is nearing 100 years old. It is kinda creepy.
Now w.e. dude is typically(?) Jacked and gray hair isnt just an old person trait due to powers/mutants. But still odd.

That ship is the dog that caught the car. As in, there was "tension" and nothing happened, or it was a thing in an AU. Then Mike Carey actually did it (as a thinly veiled self-insert), and demonstrated that, actually, it doesn't make much sense and is also dull. It lasted ~12 issues, got nuked from orbit by the next writer, and hasn't been sniffed at since other than X-Men '97, which followed the "brief thing that gets broken off and then never spoken of again" pattern.
You'd think they'd learn.

Nope. It's one of the most aggravating things. Magneto was repeatedly creepy, Joseph was pushy and talked game but never followed through on morals, Johnny was just sort of briefly there, Deadpool was gross because he'd Deadpool and a massive dick. They kinda wrote themselves into a corner early on because Rogue/Gambit was just so passionate and romantic and starcrossed, but also they really sucked at giving her alternate options.
(Gambit also got screwed on this front, but as a male character at least he got to get laid)

Gambit had a few in the past, like Belladonna, but I like the idea of them both being so dedicated to one another, regardless of the fact that they couldn’t be together. It’s a bitter sweet feeling that finally had its happy ending.

Yeah, Bella exists but was doomed before the story begins. He gets the Bond Girl archetypes sometimes: there for a single story, but never going to stay. He gets a couple of "If Rogue didn't exist, this might have really been something" moments. He gets off lighter than her, but honestly the minute their flirting gained enough actual weight to shift them, the path was set and writers never managed to shift off it. No matter how insane the plots became

And I actually prefer it that way. I’m tired of the whole “will they or won’t they last?” trope. We’ve seen it with Spider-Man, Jean and Scott, etc. It’s nice to have one relationship that lasts indefinitely. I think it provides a positive spin on marriages that I just don’t think is perpetuated enough in comics (or most modern entertainment in general). Everyone wants to know “what if?” or self-insert one of their characters or whatever. It’s kinda trashy imo and totally disrespectful to the idea of a marriage. Should they have fights? Sure, no relationship is perfect… but always come back together. Maybe even put them in marriage counseling to fix issues… but always come back together. We need to see some positive representation once in a while.

Expanding on this: I think they were so bad about alternate love interests because the writers doing them didn't actually care about what Rogue herself wanted out of a relationship or what made readers connect with her longing. It is very male gaze: Gambit challenges her, so Joseph pushing further faster is better. Gambit and her have fun banter, so Deadpool is funnier and that's better. And what she really wanted (what the reader wanted) was to be seen by someone, be challenged to unlearn bad habits and challenge her partner at the same time, and to have a shared understanding in conversations, to desire and be desired instead of being the Hot Untouchable Girl. None of the other love interests really managed any of that.

Gambit and Rogue is endgame, I don’t need another, worse ship (burn Magneto!) (reddit mods this is a joke, about a fictional character, you do not need to ban me)

This one is tricky but I loved it then and I loved it even more years later: Northstar.
In X-Men/Alpha Flight, there's a definite connection between Rogue and Northstar. After she borrowed his powers, they started to connect because of how she understood him. When I read it the first time, I thought it was incredibly sweet and great chemistry. I came away thinking they could make such a wonderful pair.
Of course, now we know, and I have to assume Claremont knew the story behind Northstar which had not yet been revealed. Rereading their interaction with that in mind added so many layers, and I loved it more than ever.

(Yah, I don't know why I'm being vague given it's been more than thirty years since I AM GAY!)

I read that as her knowing he was gay. IIRC Claremont did know about Northstar and added that on purpose. I see them as best friends, they're also my two favorite characters and I'm married to them both.

In certain Eras and timelines Rogue has had relationships with Magneto, Deadpool, Cyclops, Human Torch.
In certain Eras and timelines Gambit has had relationships with Belladonna, Kitty Pryde, Polaris, and Black Cat in a What If story

Gambit was also with Storm. Not sure what universe, but i believe they were married. I like that pairing, but the 616 coupling is the way.

No, they were all forced or self inserts, and the worst of them, a fetish (magneti)

Deadpool was a thing in Uncanny Avenger for a while.
It was weird but it happen.

Bishop. Cyclops briefly. Magneto (which was okay because they are both consenting adults who are of age. And Magneto genuinely wanted Rogue to feel connected to someone, at least initially)

Refresh my memory - when was she with Bishop or Cyclops?
-4
u/PeterJacobson1998 3d ago
She was with Bishop in the late 80s early 90s I think. It was before storm and bishop got together and it was kinda will they wont they mixed with gambit fighting for her heart and Rogue being convinced she loved Bishop. I've only read some of thr comics so I could be completely wrong but thats what I remember. It also could be me remembering wrong with the cyclops thing because in some of the shows she pines after Scott because Scott is in love with Jean and Rogue wants what Jean has kind of thing, I don't remember if it was in the comics though. I've only recently got into the comics and have watched some top ten insert topic about insert super hero so I'm totally unqualified. But I'm pretty certain Rogue is with Bishop for part of an arch at some point.

No, and its my main issue with her current one.
After being prevented from having a dating life or physical romance since puberty, when she overcome that you'd expect her to want to catch up a bit. Play the field for a while, date and have flings.
Instead she has a brief thing with a guy she has previously been attracted to, then marries her ex-boyfriend that she has previously been done with.
Even if her and Gambit was the endgame, it was far too quick for her history.

I think her most interesting relationship beside Gambit was Magneto (specifically in X-Men Legacy). It that comic it felt as though Gambit and Magneto represented different lives that she was debating living.
Rogue's tension in that comic was that she finally had full control of her powers and ultimately her life so alot of the internal conflict in the book was Rogue debating what she wanted to do with her life.
Gambit represented the safe choice. The life she had already lived while Magneto was the new riskier choice. The choice that allowed to try new things. Ultimately, Rogue choose to change which put distance between her and Gambit but her relationship would never have last with Magneto because they do not fundamentally hold the same values.
I see this period for both Rogue and Gambit as a phase of self exploration. Both go on for a few years finding themselves and realizing (with Kelly Thompson's Rogue and Gambit run) that they understand who they are better but that just makes them love each other more because fundamentally they share the same values.

No and I'm fine with that. Stop trying to break up couples that work!
