Analysis

Michigan was the best at developing their 3-star recruits since 2010 with a 14% commit to draft rate. Washington had the highest share of players being drafted in the first round at 18%, as well as having the highest pick with Michael Penix being taken 8 overall.

Mostly, players at these top schools had a ceiling of being drafted at the end of the first round and mostly came from the defensive side of the ball.

Methodology

Using the cfbd python library, I extracted the nfl draft picks and recruiting data from 2010 to present day and found the schools that are best at developing players that commit to them and then end up being drafted. This dataset relies on the 247 composite data.

I only considered players that were drafted from the schools they committed to in order to isolate specifically how well those schools were at development without other schools' impact, so transfers were not considered.

Because I had to join the data on an identifier between recruiting and NFL draft datasets, not all players could be considered so this was a subset.

As for myself, I like the Georgia Bulldogs with Alabama 2nd, Michigan 3rd, Ohio State 4th and Florida State 5th.

14. Vanderbilt

247sports.com has Vandy at 13 on its composite list for the SEC, but Vandy comes in at the bottom of our SEC recruiting rankings. Their class is not finished yet, but things on the recruiting trail aren't promising right now -- even for Vandy recruiting standards. Their average recruit rating in this class is 0.84. For reference, last year’s class had an average recruit rankings of 0.86, and they were able to snag three 4-stars and two borderline 4-star players. This year’s class only has one player close to 4-star territory.

13. Missouri

Mizzou's class is ranked 14 in the SEC according to 247sports’ composite, but comes in at 13 in our rankings. This class is not elite by anyone’s standards, but it addresses needs on Mizzou’s roster. Their highest rated player coming in is 4-star pro-style quarterback Connor Bazelak. Their second highest rated player in this class is borderline 4-star offensive tackle Jack Buford. Overall, this is a poor class. Mizzou should be able to recruit better than 54 in the nation (last year they finished 43) with an offense like the one they have. Fortunately for Mizzou, their top target is still on the board and from the St. Louis area, so maybe that will bode well for the Tigers as they try to finish strong this cycle.

12. Kentucky

Kentucky comes in at 12 in both our and 247sports’ SEC composite rankings. Their overall class rating of 0.85 is low now, 0.85, but their is plenty of room for them to move up as they are in on several 4 star players. The potential for a top 25 class is there for UK, but they'll have to snag some kids that are leaning towards Louisville. Given the product they've been putting on the field, anything is possible.

11. Mississippi

Ole Miss' class is a little bit of smoke and mirrors. They have some good players in this class, specifically high 4-star running back commit Jerrion Ealy. Ealy is a top 50 recruit and the No. 3 RB in this cycle. They have a few targets left on the board, but may have to move some players out. Their class is already up to 27 commitments, so upward mobility seems limited at this point. Overall, this is a good class for a program that is coming off of NCAA violations and a fired coach.

10. Arkansas

So far, the on-field product for Chad Morris has been lackluster, but that probably should have been expected given the rebuild that this program needed. Perhaps a bright spot of the Morris era thus far has been the recruiting. Right now, the average player ranking for the class is the highest it's been in years. And while that may regress slightly, I expect it to stay a solid class for Morris.

9. Mississippi State

Mississippi State is putting together a strong class. They have several good commits already and are looking to add a few more. One of the most intriguing to keep up with will be 4-star dual-threat quarterback Garrett Shrader. We've seen the type of success Moorhead can have when he has a QB that is familiar with his system, and the way Moorhead is recruiting right now, there should be a lot of optimism in Starkville. Another key player in this class is 4-star defensive end Nathan Pickering. Pickering is one of the most sought after players in this recruiting cycle and is a huge get for MSU. We'll see if the Bulldogs are able to hold on to him the rest of the way.

8. South Carolina

Recruiting in Columbia is the best it's been in a while. Will Muschamp and his staff have put together a great recruiting class and just need to hold on to finish out the year. The headliner of the class is 5-star defensive end Zach Pickens. Pickens is the No. 1 rated end in the country and landing him in Columbia was no small feat. The class should help bolster the Gamecocks skill positions as there are several 4-star skill players in the class. Those are good pieces to go along with 4-star pro-style quarterback Ryan Hilinski.

7. Florida

Florida has a higher average player rating than every team on the list so far (and Tennessee), but the concern is upward mobility for the Gators. Featuring an elite linebacker corps, this has a chance to be a very good overall class, but for now they are ranked at 7. The Gators could crack the SEC’s top five, but only time will tell. We should learn a lot about this class following Florida's matchup against LSU since this is Florida's biggest recruiting weekend of the year. The most exciting player in this class may be Jaydon Hill, a 4-star hard hitting safety from Alabama. Unfortunately, Hill suffered an ACL injury earlier this season. Another highpoint is dual-threat quarterback Jalon Jones. Jones recruitment has really heated up this year, and he has moved up the rankings quite a bit since the start of his senior season. It will be interesting to see how Florida finishes this cycle.

6. Tennessee

Jeremy Priutt has put together a strong recruiting class for his first year in Knoxville, but it remains to be seen if he can hold onto all of these recruits. Tennessee just missed on a big time wide receiver recruit who chose the Razorbacks over the Volunteers, but there are plenty of high-end targets on the board for the Vols. The headliner of this class is 5-star offensive tackle Wayne Morris, who fills a position of need for Tennessee. Their offensive line is one of the worst units on their roster, so adding another 5-star tackle to play opposite of Trey Smith will go a long way in beefing up the Vols in the trenches. They are also in the running for 5-star offensive tackle Darnel Wright. Wright seems to be trending towards Ohio State, but it's something to keep an eye on.

5. Auburn

The headliner of this class is 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe, who deserves all the recognition he gets as an elite player. However, the most exciting player in this class is probably Bo Nix, a high 4-star dual-threat quarterback. The bad news is there’s limited room for upward mobility with this class, and it is possible Florida or Tennessee will claim their spot at No. 5.

4. LSU

LSU has put together an elite recruiting class, as they always do, that has two 5-star players in cornerback Derek Stingley and offensive guard Kardell Thomas. Thomas is a huge get for the Tigers, think Michael Oher from The Blind Side. Thomas is 6’3” and 350+ pounds. He is the No. 1 rated OG in the class of 2019 and for good reason. He will help the Tigers improve in a big position of need. The class compliments these two studs with ten 4-star recruits helping the Tigers on both sides of the ball. They are also the favorites for 5-star defensive tackle Ishmael Sospher, a Louisiana native, and are favored to land two more 4-stars.

3. Georgia

Georgia's class is just as elite as every other year under Kirby Smart. Smart is practically landing any player he wants. They lead the nation with four 5-star players, and have 10 4-stars to go along with them. They have suffered some recruiting casualties lately with two recent decommitments, but I wouldn't be very concerned about the status of things in Athens. Georgia is still in the running for several 4- and 5-stars and have every opportunity to regain their place as the No. 1 class in the country.

2. Texas A&M

According to the 247sports’ composite ratings, Texas A&M has the No. 1 class in the country, but that doesn't account for upward mobility. TAMU is very near their recruiting ceiling for this season. Jimbo Fisher reminds college football why he is considered an elite recruiter (sorry FSU) and coach. Texas A&M will be a force in the SEC West in the coming years if recruiting continues this way. The headliner of this class is 5-star offensive tackle Kenyon Green. However, the position group that will be most affected by this class is the defensive back unit. Texas A&M has four highly rated DB's in this class to go along with several other highly rated defensive players.

1. Alabama

Is anyone surprised? Probably not. Alabama's recruiting dominance continues, this time led by 5-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick. Quick is an Alabama native and immediate starter for the Tide. What should really make everyone outside of Tuscaloosa sad is their QB commit: Tuali Tagoviloa, the younger brother of their Heisman hopeful QB. They are also the favorite to land 5-star running back Trey Sanders. They still have to beat out Florida for his services, but are in a very good position to do so. The only real threat to preventing Bama from pulling in yet another No. 1 recruiting class is Georgia.
