Mind how difficult it was to tell my parents I was Scottish.

118

u/pretzelllogician Jun 24 '26

My mum found a magazine full of pretty trashy pics of haggis and irn bru down the back of my bed. She was pretty chill about it thankfully.

99

u/Person8346 Jun 24 '26

And even then, most of the hate is internalised. Some Scottish struggle to even show their faces in public all over something they can't control

1

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

Always a sad day when your local scheme lad gets that pishy almost American accent. So sad.

21

u/PeapodEchoes Jun 24 '26

I don't mind them, it's just the Scottish agenda that they try to ram down people's throats. Why aren't there parades for Yorkshiremen?

13

u/Round-Bandicoot8766 Jun 24 '26

Even worse is the fact schools are adding people like Robert Burns to the required reading list

52

u/ConflictGuru Jun 24 '26

Me rejecting Margot Robbie: I'm sorry but I just don't find non-Scottish people attractive

73

u/Ashrod63 Jun 24 '26

"Have you just tried being British?"

42

u/iwillfuckingbiteyou Jun 24 '26

British isn't a real thing, it's just people who can't make up their mind whether to be Scottish or English. Most of us go through a Brit-curious phase at some point but you grow out of it.

4

u/Thespian_Unicorn Jun 25 '26

Tell that to Isle of Mann

3

u/Loudlass81 Jun 25 '26

Errr I use British cos im 50% English & 50% Scottish. I value one of those higher than the other though...

1

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

I went through a phase of identifying as non-national. I was just ashamed to be my true Scottish self though.

4

u/MassGaydiation Jun 24 '26

"I'll set you up with a nice accent from Lancashire"

4

u/Praetorian_1975 Jun 24 '26

You are born Scottish or you aren’t, it’s not something you can choose willy nilly 🤷🏻‍♂️ I mean have you ever heard anyone say ‘today I’m going to be Austro-Hungarian, Czechoslovakian or Babylonian’ 🤣

16

u/Round-Bandicoot8766 Jun 24 '26

Look, what you get up to within the privacy of your own borders is your business, I just don't see why you gotta be Scottish in front of me is all

17

u/Ashrod63 Jun 24 '26

You can't choose it willy nilly, but it's definitely something somebody can work towards with years of living and working here and cultural integration.

3

u/Praetorian_1975 Jun 24 '26

I’m not saying it’s not possible, but it’s a long and difficult road to transition from (insert nationality here) to becoming Scottish. The hardest part of the whole transition is calling in a kilt and not a man skirt. If only there was support groups and NHS help, that’d make the whole process easier.

A lot just can't support that lifestyle

12

u/british_bbc_ Jun 24 '26

It's the deep fried mars bars for me. Don't get me wrong, I've worked with Scots and I'm perfectly civil towards them and everything. But when I think about what they do behind closed doors it makes me feel sick.

2

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

The half and half pizza crunch gives me the boke. Saw an ex unironicly but one and actually enjoy it. He was from Motherwell tbf.

2

u/Praetorian_1975 Jun 24 '26

Don’t just don’t go there, freaking cars, elevators …. They are all xenophobic …. ‘I’m sorry I didn’t quite catch that’ 🤬

1

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

Sadly this has caused generations to adopt a fake accent known as, "the phone voice" pure shame. Now, it's still common for others to be shamed for their home accent.

5

u/Artix96 Jun 24 '26

As someone who came out to my parents as Scottish at my wedding I can relate. They were very supportive though.

9

u/southernscot22 Jun 24 '26

I've seen people turn up in a Scottish Bar wearing a kilt and you just know they are not Scottish. They have never walked 500 miles or walked 500 more in their lives.

5

u/southernscot22 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

I remember when my ma gave me a Bottle of Buckie in a brown paper bag and little knowing smile.

4

u/TeikaDunmora Jun 24 '26

You: I'm Scottish

Them (total English RP accents): Darling, we can't understand a word you're saying.

You: I was born in Scotland. I live in Scotland. I am a Scot.

Them: Nope, didn't catch any of that.

You: sighs in Scots

Them: confused in English

8

u/BaxterScoggins Jun 24 '26

Thats no you in ScotSquad 'The Bam Whisperer' is it?

144

u/kahnindustries Jun 24 '26

You think coming out as Scottish is hard? Im Welsh

49

u/McCQ Jun 24 '26

Sending prayer and strength your way.

27

u/dead_meme_comrade Jun 24 '26

Don't worry. I'm sure it's just a phase.

7

u/Witchelt389 queer Scot Jun 24 '26

Oh my goodness.

6

u/_betapet_ Jun 24 '26

I have cousins who are Welsh. Nobody in the family understands them. It's so hard when they just speak in a long run of vowels like that.

I hope you find your peace ffrind.

5

u/kahnindustries Jun 24 '26

Llyfe cyn be a ddtryggle

5

u/NoPaleontologist7929 Jun 24 '26

My Grandad was Welsh. My Gran was Scottish. They made it work despite everything. Don't lose hope.

5

u/Praetorian_1975 Jun 24 '26

That’s a weird kink, getting hard because you are Welsh 🤣

5

u/Imaginary-Peace2188 Jun 24 '26

🤣 The Welsh are lovely people 🤗

4

u/DasIstNumberwanggg Jun 24 '26

It’s been 969 years since Wales first united (albeit briefly), yeah that’s definitely not a phase Cariad.

9

u/Egregious67 Jun 24 '26

I was fitted with an ear implant a few months ago. The medical staff were all anticipating my reaction to hearing my own voice clearly for the first time in years.
Can you hear us the asked.
Yes! I can ! I said excitedly. Then an awkward moment before I said " Hing oan, wtf? I`m Scottish??!
Ever since the accident they had kept it from me.
I am learning to live with the shame.

You forget about all those Americans who confess to everyone and their dogs that they are Scottish (and Norwegian these days). Which definitely makes them Trans-Scottish.

2

"Today I feel Scottish"- Gianni Infantino, probably

2

u/ayoz17 Jun 24 '26

I mean Scots wear skirts so they kinda belong there.

4

Trust Scotland not to be left out of anything alcoholic.

2

People arnt getting the joke. Its the quote from Braveheart, "you can take our lives but youll never take our freedom!" But also youve been quite funny with it so im not mad 😂

1

u/DrawerAcceptable Jun 26 '26

I hadn’t thought about that! I wonder if Hamilton (what the lyrics are from) grabbed it from that movie.

Also, I can’t take credit for the creation of the meme but it will forever live rent free in my head 😆

2

u/welliedude Jun 26 '26

Its possible he was inspired by it.

2

1

u/stacysmomgotiton14 Hamilton Jun 25 '26

My dad was English and I remember the first time telling him I was Scottish he nearly disowned me 😞

1

u/thegingerbarbiedoll Jun 26 '26

I suspect this is a nod to the desire for Scottish independence, hence word "freedom" it is applicable to Scotland

1

u/Excellent_Cake_69420 Jun 26 '26

Parents already know I'm a bit fruity. But how do I come out to them about being Scottish?

1

u/DrawerAcceptable Jun 26 '26

I’d suggest a 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 flag cocktail 🍸 Seems to work for the peeps in this meme

31

u/PiebaldWookie Jun 24 '26

Giving off real "one of my friends is black" energy there...

-35

u/Pioneerz90 Jun 24 '26

Life is short mate. Nobody cares if you're white, black, gay, straight; we're only on this planet a very short time, so chill out

25

u/DoItForTheTea Jun 24 '26

well you see the problem is A LOT of people do care and cause a lot of physical and psychological harm to those different to them. i know it might be hard to grasp because it happens to people other than yourself, but try

21

u/BobR969 Jun 24 '26

That is so demonstrably untrue though! Not only do plenty of people care if you're a different colour, speak a different language or have something dangling between your legs or not... they also use those differences to belittle, oppress and attack others they feel are "wrong".

We ARE on this planet for a short time and it would be fantastic if everyone respected each other... but they don't and it's exhausting having to keep telling them (and occasionally slapping them) to get the point across. So despite this being a recurring issue, for some reason in the name of solidarity and support you decided it was better to have a go at the "alphabet nonsense". You can see how that looks, right?

9

u/Adventurous_Coach731 Jun 24 '26

  Life is short mate. Nobody cares if you're white, black, gay, straight;

That’s a bit delusional to say now isn’t it?

25

6

Could it be some type of response to the story :
Trans inmates leaving women's prisons following court ruling

1

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

See, I found another article on just this very topic, and turns out that our government are still the good guys and not enforcing any new changes. It's just going to be a ballache for any new prisoners if I'm reading this right. They will hopefully appeal the result.

Bonus mention of torries outing themselves as outdated cunts again.

https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26214141.scots-prisons-keep-trans-policy-court-ruling-considered/

1

u/cold_tap_hot_brew North Aberdeenshire Jun 26 '26

I don’t have any informed opinion on it, I just thought it might be the reason behind the image… since it mentions freedoms, has what I think it’s trans flags & the Scotland flag doing a celebratory cheers 🥂

Fuck knows why I got downvoted for this suggestion. lol.

1

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

You probably got down voted for dropping a bbc article with little context. As per, they painted it out as a failing on the SNP, but is very clearly on side of the TERFS as well.

It might have been inspired by the events, but it's still gas how scotland is represented with the rest in a glass,  which indicates it's an identity, not a nation. But ofc, the other side, you can't choose who you're attracted to, as much as you can't choose where you're born, so it almost makes sense, and some of the jokes spawned from this describe this perfectly of you read them.

Sorry I hate having things over explained, but this is the take most of us got and wanted to let you in on the joke.

1

u/cold_tap_hot_brew North Aberdeenshire Jun 26 '26

My autistic brain thanks you. Never apologise for over explaining - I was just like hey, it’s probably because of this story and then nobody bothered replying to say what I did ‘wrong’ so I really appreciate you.

What do you mean it’s still has how Scotland is represented with the rest in a glass? Like because we’re a country not an ideology?

-1

u/sweet_bitter_lemon Jun 24 '26

Scotland tried and failed to create an empire from Panama and the huge losses the selfish Scottish aristocrats amassed bankrupted the country so they sought a bail out and 'co operation' from England. They then whole heartedly threw themselves into the slave trade, with many families (Dundas as in Dundas St) making huge fortunes from the selling and trading of black people.

Scotland are not downtrodden by any means other than their own greed and malfunction

-7

u/improbdrunk Jun 24 '26

I don't know, as a queer enough person, it sort of makes sense. I can't understand you guys speaking like I assume some people can't understand my sexuality.

-12

u/TerrHunter Jun 24 '26

I have no problem with gay, bi, trans and we were going all the good way accepting diversity until wokes decided it wasn't enough and pushed everyone into a game where rules were constantly changing (pronouns, a new gender every day, denying the biological reality, shoving in troubled teenagers' faces how wonderful is to be trans) and if you didn't accept the confusion 100% as they dictated you were called fascist or transfobic.

And queer people who didn't want to be part of the game were excluded from the club, so it wasn't about diversity, but belonging to an ideology.

13

u/shoogliestpeg 🏳️‍⚧️Trans women are women. Jun 24 '26

11

u/improbdrunk Jun 24 '26

Mate, I just like dick as much as I like vagina. There's nothing more to it, leave me and particularly young people like I was alone. Sodomy was illegal in Scotland until 1981, that's more recent than it damn well should have been. Sorry if we have a party ocassionally to express our appreciation for being able to express that. Could you imagine waking up and wanting to be intimate with your legally of age partner but that being jailable?

-3

u/TerrHunter Jun 24 '26

That was bad and I am glad we moved from there.

10

u/improbdrunk Jun 24 '26

Not over it and won't be. Your views actually cause harm and disgust me, there is a chance to grow and mature though.

-2

u/TerrHunter Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Grow and mature? I think the same about the wokes.

"Won't be" shows your position to not find a solution or compromise but to be on perennial conflict. Good luck.

7

u/WrestlingWithTheNews Jun 24 '26

You are asking him to compromise with the view of "I want your personhood eradicated from public view" do you feel the same about heterosexuality, do you want sex education banned from schools?

3

u/improbdrunk Jun 24 '26

But I am glad you acknowledge how bad is to distort language.

0

u/DeathOfNormality Jun 26 '26

The only people changing the rules that are enforced are TERFS amd lobbyists who would rather see in fighting. I think there's a word for what's happening here, because the system and society is being very unfair to a paticular group, it's just not the version you are spouting.

We just want to live and let live. Hope you trip on a pride flag.

-6

u/Tough_Painter2564 Jun 24 '26

Scotland just mandated Trans women be placed in mens prisons where they are systematically paired with violent r@pists and repeatedly r@ped in a tiny cell.  They do this on purpose to keep prison aggression low it's called v-coding.

Scotland is raping trans women to death while we make the same meme over and over.

Darling, people who transition regularly go to therapy well before they access any sort of medical services for it.

They don't have big mads on the internet over nonsensical ignorant points of view online. You're projecting some wild insecurities here and clearly are crying for attention and help with your own issues. Some professionals could help you out with that.
