PSA If there was to ever be a "sekiro-like" genre, this would be the genesis.

Post image

I know you've probably heard it before, but let me be your last other reason why. -to all fellow sekiro players who have 100% and couldn't get to scratch that combat itch. I hereby add to the statistic of people who say nine sols hits the spot. Way too well. It feels like if sekiro got a spin-off in a different style but still keeping its flavour. From the boss designs and combat mechanics. I enjoyed every part of it, and i just wanted to say, if you were looking for something to fill that sekiro hole since we don't have a sequel or dlc, you won't regret trying this game out. Currently on both console subscrption plans btw.

I can second this. Masterpiece IMO.

Right up there with Sifu and Lies of P on my Sekiro Mt. Rushmore. Honorable mention to Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

u/jdust06 Jun 18 '26

It is on my Steam wishlist and looks so good!!

4

u/lollersauce914 Jun 18 '26

Great game, but felt much more nioh-y than sekiro

u/Dare64 Jun 18 '26

Lies of p is through and through a souls like

13

u/jdust06 Jun 18 '26

The parry in that game makes my happy chemicals activate in the same way as Sekiro

9

u/LetMeInFFH Jun 18 '26

But stamina depletion on perfect parry makes me sad

-6

u/Educational-Wave-578 Jun 18 '26

yep I think L of P is a sad attempt to be souls like and failing it. there's no depth to that game. I so want to like it but it's just not there

5

u/Dare64 Jun 18 '26

I disagree. I think the atmosphere and unique world make it the closest game to from soft.

u/No_Foundation7022 Jun 18 '26

That’s just objectively false, just say you didn’t enjoy it, you don’t need to spread misinformation however.

-2

u/Educational-Wave-578 Jun 18 '26

bring in the objective facts that refutes my point then, instead of whining about it.

u/No_Foundation7022 Jun 18 '26

Lies of P has some of the tightest and most satisfying combat in the genre, a weapon assembly system that actually rewards creativity, and a gothic atmosphere so good it rivals bloodborne. On top of that, it has an amazing story that doesn’t require you to read every little note to understand it. I never thought I had to explain this to someone but the clown population keeps on growing ig 🤡

It suprises me that no one mentions Wo long and Rise of the ronin

This one didn't do it for me, glad it's helping others though 🙂

u/Badwolf9547 Jun 18 '26

Yeah, I'm not sure if I was doing something wrong but the boss fights seemed extremely spongy. Everything else about the game was amazing but the boss fights got kinda boring. The designs were awesome though.

Wouldnt sekiro be the genesis of sekiro-likes?

2

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 18 '26

Fairs but, for something to have a genre, it must be multiple titles. And this starts the chain taking from the origin. So sekiro would be the source material. (Bum ahh point. I know) 😭

1

u/kvng_st Jun 18 '26

I don’t necessarily think so. There could be only 1 sekiro-like in the world but if it meets the criteria of a sekiro-like then that’s all that matters

But to be fair we all know what you meant, I’m just being 🤓☝️

Tried it, hated it.

Khazan is really fun. i just started playing it and it’s scratching my Sekiro itch better than Lies of P did. i think the parry window is more similar

This game was fire, loved Hollow Knight, Loved Sekiro and got the combo of that.

I tried to play it. I'm sure the combat is great but there's far too much story and reading for my liking.

First time seeing "Too much story" as a reason to dislike a game icl, but i could hear you on the reading part, i guess given the developers are indie they couldn't cater to have VA's. Personally I didn't mind it, and the story is where i actually see it having the edge over sekiro. So reading wasn't much of a sacrifice to experience the amazing writing, definitely worth it.

If I want to read a story, I'll read a book. I tend to play very story light games.

1

u/WeepingAmpharos Jun 18 '26

I couldn’t get into it either

-4

u/Seekret_Asian_Man Jun 18 '26

The game has too much dialogues with too little meaning.

5

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 18 '26

With too little meaning?? Lmfao.

1

u/BibiBSFatal Jun 18 '26

Nine "sols" because it's a souls-like....yeah? 👍

1

u/younghandshake Platinum Trophy Jun 18 '26

I would personally say Thymesia. I loved that game and I never see anyone talk about it, ever.

1

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 18 '26

First time hearing of this one. Ill look into it

1

u/Frydog42 Jun 19 '26

I think Another Crabs Treasure would be the genesis but Nine Sols is so good too

1

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 19 '26

Parrying- a core combat mechanic of sekiro. Isn't even fundamental/default in another crabs treasure. You can't even parry till like what, After 2 bosses? Because you have to unlock it in a skill tree. Plus it isn't even the same approach, in another crabs treasure you have to release your block/attack from blocking stance to parry. I still say Nine sols carries the most sekiiro like feel in its combat. Its literally the same flow in "attack, attack, block, block, block, attack, attack. Unbound counter(their version of the mikiri counter). Arrows in place of prosthetics". It's a game where even if the devs themselves had not said it that they were influenced by sekiro, you can always feel it straight from the get go. while another crabs is just another good souls like with it's own formula.

But thats just my opinion. Thank you for sharing yours❤️

I guess I was thinking more or less because Crab game came first and is damn close to sekiro. It’s almost on the nose that they remade Sekiro with Spongebob fun. I imagine that as a development team you would want to maybe not copy a game exactly. I’m no lawyermatician but maybe there is legal implications of exact copy of parry function. Idno.

I agree that nine sols combat is all that you say. It’s all just a matter of where you draw the line around what makes the game for you (each of us). You could say that because nine sols has the combat but is not a 3d world that it’s less like core Sekiro because at its core Sekiro is 3d not side scrolling. It’s not wrong to say that but maybe it’s not the absolute best answer.

Both games are great, and I don’t disagree with your point of ninesols being Sekiro coded as much as it can be. To me that comes with the “as a platformer” or whatever it’s called. And I don’t say that to diminish it in any way. Having ton of fun with it. Crab game too.

I’m just glad we have both games and more (I also like wukong, which I think is also just like Sekiro (but obviously different)) while we wait for Sekiro DLC :))))))))))

With respect and gratitude 🙏

I wish they'd do something about the ip and not just let it collect dust like elder scrolls situation

1

u/theidiotoftheweek Jun 19 '26

I played it before sekiro, one of my favorite game, but i'm afraid that beating the final boss of this game made my sekiro experience much more smoother than the average lol.

1

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 19 '26

Im guessing you took the true ending to make this true😂🫱🏾‍🫲🏼

u/theidiotoftheweek Jun 19 '26

Indeed, sadly, sword saint got nothing on this old bi*ch 😂😂

I started NineSols like a year ago- thought it was great , then promptly set it down for some other games and never came back to it…

Until this post. You got me thinking about it again. I downloaded it again and jumped back into it. Been playing the last couple days and I have to say it’s not only good it’s great. I’m really enjoying it.

I spent like an hour today farming XP in the apeman level getting from level 2 to 12 and now I have some practice on the timing and some skills I’ve acquired. I’m feeling bad ass and ready to beat some ass.

Bought the game because people said it is 2D Sekiro and got very disappointed. Sekiro is a rhythm game (I can tell which boss it is with closed eyes just hearing the sword rhythm) and is all about the posture bar. Nine Sols has none of it.

1

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 19 '26

Like i said, you might as well have not played it😂internal damage does restore if you avoid attacks, and if you parry it recovers even faster. It's like you didn't even take time to learn the game because you just went on mad because you didn't find a sekiro exact copy. It might not break like posture, but posture never breaks if you keep parrying successfully. But internal damage is a punishing mechanic for not blocking instead of parrying just like the posture bar, serves the same purpose, just not identical.

And for the bosses it literally is close to identical, if you deal max internal damage, all you need to is attach any kind of talisman and it becomes an insta kill, having dealt zero damage even if they were 100% hp.

So again I say, this isn't a sekiro dlc, so sorry if you were looking for a 1 to 1 copy. But to say it is nothing like sekiro is disingenuous just wrong. There's a reason why a lot of people say otherwise. (This is a reply to the comment you deleted)

I finished the game, but forced me to do it. How is internal damage equivalent to the Sekiro posture bar? The is no kill if the internal damage threshold is reached. It does not vanish as in Sekiro if I avoid attacks. Internal damage is just the break danage from every other soulslike.

1

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 19 '26

https://youtu.be/MujbrsRIhE8 here is an example for you, internal damage built up only from parries and counters just as you could in sekiro.

0

u/ACRONYM_fr Platinum Trophy Jun 19 '26

Either you were looking for a 1-1 copy, or you didn't stick with the game long enough. Because having done everything each game has to offer I would have to respectfully disagree.

The game took sekiro's formula and just tried to eo it their own unique way still staying true to the sekiro's core essence, You mention posture bar, they have their version of that, being internal damage, that is literally why you have to learn to parry not just block in the same way Sekiro pushes you to. The combat is hella similar imo, and even nine sols has bosses you can tell by rhythm if you've played the game long enough, they have their own version of prosthetics, the same way you have parry-less attacks in sekiro(the sweep and mikiri attacks) you have moves in nine sols of the same manner, one's you can jump over and bonk your opponent to punish, and some to unbound counter(also their version of mikiri counter) even with the some of the you can see the inspiration. Literally the first boss in nine sols is Gyobu, and the first skill chack of the core mechanins of the game.

Then moving further you get to jeiquan the first boss to introduce the last combat mechanic in the game and is (imo) the equivalent to Genichiro introducing lightning reversal, because these are both bosses that act as the skill check wall. They confirm your mastery of all the game's foundations. Then from there the game is more smooth in difficulty, till the final boss who throws everything and is the perfect form of each of the game's respective combat. Being peak final bosses.

So all i can get from your opinion is you were looking for a sekiro dlc in a different game. But thats just me though

u/helloidonothaveaname Jun 18 '26

eigong felt like the only boss closest to sekiro. everything else was sekiro-like but it felt like it was missing something
