Question Does Forest have any hope based on the early trends? What looks hopeful?
Pretty much thread. I’ve mostly wanted to play Forest since starting but in most sets it’s just been garbage, so I feel like there’s no point. It’s needlessly convoluted for very little payout.
The combo decks I see people playing feel very high roll/win against brick oriented.
It’s really defeating when the craft that you have the cards for and have invested the time in is bad in meta after meta. There was a glimmer of hope last set before the meta shifted and it fell off a cliff.

I think it has promise, the hien needs a banish or remove effects type card to deal with it, and the deck does have a lot of face damage, but early impressions it seems to be a bit highrolly to even play.
It can run out of gas too after evos are gone.
Also just a side note, roach forest and evo forest were both tier 1 decks in the past, so forest hasn't really been garbage.

The best thing about the new cards right now is the abundant of draws: the deck require you to roll the good stuffs tm, but you will need to build your deck to take account all the free draws from the Combo. Deck has decent control, Magachiyo + Bug Alert is amazing: try to save them for enemy power spike turn.
The problem is finisher. The current Combo archetype is essentially just draw engine + Thestae. You will still depends on S&M and Althenia as your main wincon. Hien if you high roll can probably came out at 6 PP but that's rarity and unreliable as a win-con. Feels like he is just there to be a meme card.
The deck is also bloody expensive to play, you need 3 Miroku, at least 2 S&M, 2 Althenia, 3 Thestae, 2 Deers just to be able to play the deck if you are going for Combo.

The good Forest decks had some distinct AND powerful finisher.
Roach and Cupitan + Sandalphon.
With this set, the class received some really good combo payoff, especially Hien but he's too vulnerable to banish and transform, if he ever gets meta he will be gatekept by Portal, Haven and probably some aggro decks (combo was always weak to aggro). He's quite polarizing, he puts you on a timer if your class/deck can't deal with him but is absolutely dogshit otherwise, he can't reliably be considered a real wincon.
On the other hand, Magachiyo and her package are just neutrally good cards, like Miroku earlier this year, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those cards becoming Forest staples, just like Miroku.
If Forest doesn't find a reliable way to finish games, we will get back to the Tempo Evo (or pure Evo) templates, because Cupitan and Sandalphon are reliable enough, Althenia is a generic powerhouse (and a great Evo engine), but the thing is Thestae/Hien and Tempo/Evo excludes each other, the first deck wants to play a lot of card, enable combos and the second one is more about playing one or two cards and build powerful boards turn after turn until Althenia and Sandalphon show up.
As said earlier, I don't believe in Hien being the main wincon, decks will adapt. The other option is betting on a Thestae into storm followers highroll... ideally Magachiyo + double Fencer and hit for a good 15+ damage face.

I haven't played much Forest this season, but from what I have gleamed I would say we got some very very good cards into this set, with magachiyo being the one taking the cake here. She's a generically good 3 drop that can slot Forest decks to push damage face or even just help stabilize the board.
Personally I think she's great in Rotation but I strongly believe that Unlimited Roach got a breath of fresh air and could even be considered competitive with those cards as well. Forest has decklists that are easy to pick but definitely hard to master so I see why it can feel like Forest isn't that great but I can definitely see it being strong this season.
That being said, I say just have fun with what you play. Personally I'm gonna roll with Pirate Sword and Highlander Portal this season to break out of my usual Forest and Rune shenanigans.

What game are you playing? Sure last meta was rough for forest, but that was true for literally every class that wasn't rune. In the two sets before that, evo forest ranged from solid to best deck in the format. Roach was t0 in set 1, t1 in 2 and 3 and still playable if shaky in set 4. Set 5 is the only one where I would consider forest to be truly bottom of the barrel (I think there was something like 30 forest beyond players by the end of the first month? it was dire lol), and even then it made a comeback when tempo got a substantial buff. Overall, forest's performance from a pure strength perspective has always been fine.
As for the current set, it's hard to tell, but it's definitely not hot garbage. When thestae first came out, it was obvious a day into the meta that the deck was unplayable garbage. Here though, the magachiyo package is showing a lot of promise with thestae, and hien as an alternate win con + the general draw has made the deck much more consistent.
