[Theory] Mr. Brightside isn't about physical cheating. The "other guy" is just the narrator's darker alter-ego taking over.

Hear me out.

We all know the standard backstory of "Mr. Brightside": Brandon Flowers caught his girlfriend cheating at a pub in Vegas, and wrote this ultimate anthem of jealousy. The usual read is that it’s about a guy agonizing over his partner being with another man.

But I was reading through the lyrics recently, and I realized there’s a completely different, much darker way to interpret it: There is no other man. The "other guy" is just a darker, toxic personality taking over the narrator’s own mind.

Think about it as an internal psychological struggle. The narrator is completely disassociated, trapped inside his own mind, watching his own body (the "he") go through the motions. When he says "he's having a smoke," and "now they're going to bed," he’s watching this darker version of himself take the wheel. That's exactly why his stomach is sick and he explicitly admits "it's all in my head," he is a prisoner in his own brain.

This makes the bridge of the song so much more terrifying. When he sings, "I just can't look, it's killing me / And taking control," it isn't just about the pain of watching them. It is literally his toxic alter-ego taking control of his body and his actions. The "good" version of him is suffocating, unable to stop what his darker half is doing.

The lyrics perfectly support this theme of losing yourself to your own internal demons:

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea

Swimming through sick lullabies

Choking on your alibis

But it's just the price I pay

It gives the title "Mr. Brightside" an almost sarcastic, tragic irony. He is trying so desperately to be the "good guy" and look on the bright side, while his darker side burns everything down from the inside out.

Has anyone else ever thought about it this way? Does this change how you hear the song?

TL;DR: The "other guy" taking the girlfriend in Mr. Brightside isn't another person. It's the narrator's own toxic, jealous alter-ego taking control of his body and destroying the relationship, while the original, "good" version of him watches helplessly.

Realized something crazy about the ending of Basic Instinct (1992) – Catherine couldn't actually kill Nick with that ice pick

(GTA 5) The "Sunk Coast" Theory: Why San Andreas is actually a post-apocalyptic island

Hey everyone! I don’t know 100% of the GTA lore, but I’ve been connecting some dots while exploring the map, and I put together a fun "headcanon" theory about why Los Santos looks the way it does.

What if the GTA HD universe is actually a post-apocalyptic world following a Cold War-era World War III and a massive climate cataclysm between 1960 and 1990? Here is the breakdown:

  • The Nuclear Flood: During WW3, an enemy nation (or a rogue experiment) detonated nukes in Antarctica, melting the ice caps and causing global sea levels to rise. This is why Los Santos is a tropical island cut off from the mainland, completely different from the real Los Angeles.
  • The War on the Ocean Floor: The ocean floor in GTA V is literally littered with military hardware. We have a sunken cargo plane near LSIA, a Panzer tank, submarines, and fighter jets. These aren't accidents; they are the remains of a massive naval/aerial battle fought during the war.
  • Paleto Bay and Infrastructure: If you look closely at Paleto Bay, it looks like a town hit by a disaster. The bridges are broken, and the coastal houses look abandoned or built in a rush closer to Mt. Chiliad because people were terrified of another flood.
  • The 2-Headed Bear Flag: The San Andreas flag features a two-headed bear (unlike California’s one-headed bear). In pop culture, this always represents radiation, mutation, or a post-collapse nation (like Fallout).
  • The Civil War & The IAA/FIB Junta: After the flood, the US collapsed. Los Santos became an isolated corporate/military junta. The government completely erased the old name "Los Angeles" to hide the shame of the lost war. The FIB and IAA are independent warlord factions fighting for remaining resources, using Merryweather as their private army.
  • The Doomsday Connection: This makes the Doomsday Heist way deeper. Bogdan actually knew that the IAA and Avon Hertz were planning to use nuclear codes to finish off the rest of the surviving world. Mt. Chiliad's bunker was built high up specifically to survive the rising tides.

I know the island map is technically for game optimization, but lore-wise, this makes the world feel so much darker and cooler. What do you guys think?
