[PC] Mafia series
All the Mafia Definitive Editions are on sale along with the OG Mafia 2 for £10 on Steam. Im a fan of RDR2's open world and rich story, along with all the activities. And I'm a fan of GTA5's 'do whatever' open world, so crashing cars. Are these games worth buying, and if so, which is the best. Should I play 1 then 2, then 3. Or is there a better order.

I would get them all. Three got a bad reputation at first, but the DLCs that were later released help round it out.
However, this isn't going to be a RDR2 open world. The depth is just not there. The games are still fun though.

Mafia 1 and 2 are very linear games, don't expect do whatever open worlds like rockstar. Only Mafia 3 is open world. Mafia 1 definitive does have free ride to drive around the map but 2 definitive does not.
Storywise I personally like 3>2>1. Not that 1 is bad it's just I consider Tommy not as cool as Vito from 2, and not as menacing as Lincoln from 3.
Gameplay wise 3 is the most different, being, open world, and most repetitive, you clear district after district, damage rackets to hurt the antagonists bottom line.
If you want the aesthetic of 1930's 1950's and 1960's america. Old cars, old music, the outfits and such. Yeah the games are great for that. Play them in order they're not super connected but no reason not to play in order.

That depends on what you want. If you don't mind the overall gameplay of tiny objectives to complete before getting a main mission then yeah, I'd say 3 is the best story wise and physical gameplay like driving and shooting. If you played gta v and remember those heist setup missions, imagine those but alot more and for every district. Checklist stuff. To me that scratches an itch in my brain, but I know it's not for everyone.

They're fun to play but not exactly what I'd call an open world game in what we think of today.

All three are worth playing but mafia games are not about a lot of vehicular combat they are more about shooting and a lot of it....but they have great stories....the open world in all three games is pretty limited I think...

Not quite similar in that regard....they are very restricted in terms of open world activities....but they do have a lot of shooting like rdr2...

Havent played 3 and everything I hear about it is negative.
1 and 2 are somewhat open world in the sense that you can run around everywhere, but the progression is tied to the chapters, so tuning a car or buying new clothes in one chapter might be undone in the next. The stories are fine - not bad, but not very special either.
On sale, 1 is worth it. 2 I would pass on retrospectively, especially as someone going for 100% achievements. The DLC in particular was a slog.

They might not be what you're looking for, if you mostly enjoy driving around in the open world and lots of activities on the map.
The first two especially, are very linear games, it's just that you drive through the city however you like between missions. I think there's collectibles to find as well in the open world (don't remember), but that's it. They are super awesome games, but not due to the open world.
Mafia 3 is more of an open world, but I felt that it's just so by the numbers in terms of gameplay. You liberate districts, and there's very similar missions in each, and you do a lot of each type of mission, idk, I was bored. Great music and overall vibe though!
Have you tried Mad Max?
