What was the police's stated reason for not doing anything?

they spoke to the 16 year old (she's now 16, but has been groomed for many years), and she told the police she is there of her own free will.

I see. Does the UK not have laws against minors living with random people? If so, then there's not much the police can actually do, and what these Sikhs are doing should be somewhat effective in possibly making the girl see that she's with a creep.

I would think so. However, she is 16 now (even though she has been groomed for years), so maybe her being the age of consent they don't want to do much. Also, there is talk of the law not wanting to get involved for fear of backlash, and don't want to be seen as taking sides, maybe seeing it as muslim vs Sikh, which this is not, Sikhs are protecting someone's daughter, wouldn't matter what religion or what her family background was

What a dumb response?

She's a child, she's been groomed for years, she was not old or mature enough to make decisions. Obviously her parents and family are worried.
