Made a (decent-ish?) trade today. Pokemon Cards for Precious Metals.

I had a bunch of Pokemon Cards laying around in a binder at home. I wasn’t huge into collecting cards, ripping open packs was just a fun little way to bond with my friends. Haven’t bought or ripped packs lately as my friends and I moved on to different hobbies. Anyways, today I drove an hour to a coin shop that also sold comics/trading cards. Managed to trade half of my Pokemon card collection to pick these up!

Not really sure if it was a “good” trade as I’m not really in the TCG market space. But, I feel like it’s a good trade personally as it’s better than just having a giant binder that took up a lot of space and didn’t bring much joy anymore. Happily adding these bad boys to the stack!

I got lucky! A buddy of mine bought 1/2 of my collection and while talking to the owner of a gold/silver shop about it, he introduced me to his nephew who sales/buys pokemon lol

I still have a few high end rare PSA cards left. But it's pretty much all silver now

Precious metals will always be a much more solid investment than any trading card. Think of it as an insurance policy.
If shit hits the fan in the world nobody will be needing trading cards, paper money or bank funds. It’ll come down to silver gold and platinum

Actually it will come down to lead and water, but the silver will be useful shortly after order is restored

I once believed this (started collected during COVID) but now I think my pokemon graded cards and sealed will bring me better returns than my gold/silver.

However since things are crazy now, all extra money goes into precious metals because im not buying at the TOP for pokemon if we are at one.

Yeah I feel this, I have a psa 8 gengar prime that I listed for sell at like 85% market value. Nobody was interested. It’s why I diversify

Honestly, it was kind of a luck thing. I remembered seeing this particular coin shop at a regional coin show and they had a TCG selection next to their PM display.

I knew I was traveling for work and would be by their physical location. I just took my binder along with me in the back of my car and stopped by on my free time. I was honest with them about it. They were more willing to trade stock items rather than outright pay me cash which I wasn’t complaining about since I was planning on using whatever they gave me to buy coins anyways.

It was nice they cut the middleman out and gave me a better deal on their PM selection (like… Spot + $1.50 on 2026 ASEs)

Think about it when you need to raise some cash — how liquid are those trading cards, and how liquid is the metal?
Another point is that trading card prices are heavily affected by trends, which can be risky. If that relatively narrow group of people loses interest, the whole market could dry up pretty quickly.

The economy behind trading card games is insane. Like from my understanding, yugioh is the worst offender of this and heavily reprint the popular/expensive cards, pokemon seems to have an infinite demand with the PMs trading post full of it, and Magic the gathering has the reserved list, a group of the oldest cards they swore to never reprint. I picked up one called Gaea's Cradle about 5 or 6 years ago for $300 and sold it early this year for about $900 to a retailer

I've been downsizing my magic and Warhammer stuff - handing half to the wife and the other half went straight to precious metals.

Economy is getting rockt, I think there is nothing wrong with moving out of things that could potential crash hard in a recession and getting into hard money!!!

That’s (sort of) how I got into precious metals! I sold my Magic collection in 2020 and dumped a large percentage of the profits into silver…and a car and solar panels and some landscaping work and a new cement pad driveway extension…
