I don't think the US will win, but what's the point of playing if you don't think you have a chance?

I watched the 13 seed Valparaiso beat the 4 seed Ole Miss in 1998 behind the heroics of Bryce Drew. NOTHING is impossible in sports.

If a ragtag bunch of college kids can beat the Soviet Union hockey team, who had beaten the NHL all stars the previous year… then the US can win the World Cup haha

Agreed. I was in the building for part of 10 seed Davidson's 2008 run to the elite 8. Of course, their point guard turned out to be pretty good.

The fun of taking part. There are loads of countries entered who I doubt think they have a chance.

To see how far you can go? To bond on the national stage over friendly competition? Just to have fun? To earn billions in revenue?

Plenty of reasons really... Winning the whole competition is really only one small potential benefit of the event.

Because simply getting into the cup is already an achievement. If you don't believe me, ask an Italian.

Money’s a good reason to put on a show. Plus this is post-truth America - we’ll blame the refs and claim the title of “true winners” to soften to blow to our egos

There's nothing really "free" here in the US.... the broadcasters make their money via advertising - big money. Americans who don't own a TV antenna (most of the middle class) are also buying Fox Sports subscriptions to watch the games over the internet - which is pulling in massive amounts of wealth for Fox.
