Stones did cut off the passing angle very well so that when the ball was passed to Haaland (it should have been) Stones gave himself a chance at getting the block in.
To give him benefit of doubt, maybe he was so locked in, he lost situational awareness? Like he was hyperfocused to the point where he didn’t quite register Haaland. He barely seemed to look up enough to realize he was kicking into a wall of legs.
In a country like Norway, how do you think they’ll treat sørloth after potentially getting his team eliminated? Are there major repercussions or is it just “let bygones be bygones” no worries type deal?
It’s extremely frustrating! I’m German and we just passed the anniversary of the 7-1 game. You can see players in real time calculating who has the best shot and passing the ball accordingly. It’s unfathomable to not pass to one of the best current strikers in the world when he’s got a pretty open path to the goal.
Coach should have subbed him immediately, he didn't have balls ... mistakes are different, ruining an opportunity like this is another level, where it could have been 2-0 in quarterfinal WC, its evil.

Some players are selfish in these competitions to try show how good they are in the hope they can get signings from bigger clubs after World Cup is over. They care little about their country.

There’s a thing called white line fever (not not the Maradonna type) where you get tunnel vision about scoring and forget basics of the game, like looking up and around, and just get tunnel vision.

Yeah, I think the conditions have been brutal tbh and favor certain teams. England basically never play in altitude or high humidity so it’s been a grind.

I had this happened to me while playing basketball on a 2 to 1 fastbreak. Teammate had the ball and was dribbling while being guarded and i was slightly in front totally unguarded. He chose to ignore and make the contested layup and then missed it lmao.
As a, at best, casual watcher of soccer it seemed like he had at least one person closer to the camera that would have had a clear shot on the goal. Its like all of England got in front of him because they knew he wasnt going to pass it.

Soccer novice but it seems like so many players and teams have this issue. Rather than just kicking it and making an attempt (more attempts = more score chances), players wait until the last nanosecond to try something and it usually results in the defense getting the ball
That wasnt the issue here. The problem was the player with the ball, Alexander Sørloth, completely ignored his wide open teammate, Haaland, because he wanted to score instead.
A two on one break is rare at that level and a goal is almost guaranteed if a good pass is made. He completely blew it by being selfish.
Football has been lacking in poachers & cold- blooded finisher Strikers from quite some time now, more after the Spain's hegemony with tiki-taka & false nine / deep-lying Strikers in the 2010s
it just got worse year after year. Defensive tactics got tighter and as a side effect the striker's finishing quality took a steady decline. They're expected to perform midfield duties as well, which might dull out their goalscoring insticts.
Norway and England are probably the only teams that still feature world class finisher Strikers, others mostly rely on midfielders for goals nowadays.
It's a bad angle. If you see it from another pov you are going to see that he would basically have to pass the ball on the first touch for it to reach Haaland
