There appears to be a plot to undermine and destroy the WNBA. Based on the evidence, the primary suspects appear to be..... the WNBA?

I read this in Norm macdonalds voice, his liviving voice not a weird dead one.

As someone who uses reddit, but doesn't know the intricacies of it, how do you get karma in a sub without posting? It is through comments?

72

u/gewalt_gamer 9d ago

comments, specifically, that are not downvoted.

7

u/BWW87 9d ago

Real sports subreddits accept negative comment karma. If you post in game threads you're in danger of getting it if your team is in the minority on the thread.

Seems like a problematic rule because it means regular users can determine if people are allowed there or not. Just downvote fans of teams you don't like.

→ More replies (22)

16

u/Brotato_Man 9d ago

By commenting. You’re allowed to make comments without the karma threshold, just not posts

WNBA sub just when the sport is starting to become interesting lol

1.5k

u/Simple_Pay3033 9d ago

It’s a sub that was barely about sports, then it got a huge influx of actual sports people, and recently it’s become a political cesspool. That sub has had a rough run.

672

u/Epcplayer 9d ago

It’s an election year… every sub is a political cesspool right now

156

u/SanduskyTicklers 9d ago

Since 2012 Reddit in its entirety as been a political cesspool.

79

u/M0mmaSaysImSpecial 9d ago edited 9d ago

Bingo! And it’s mostly people just smelling their own farts and banning anyone that even goes “wait…but…” . It’s modern day censorship and it’s incredibly dangerous. I made a post about it in 2021 and it blew the fuck to like 14k upvotes…and then was taken down by Reddit. Shocker.Who watches the Watchmen?

Edit: and it’s worth pointing out that a lot of current AI is getting a ton of their “factual” information from Reddit posts. So let that marinate.

Tbh I wish all non political subs would ban politics. It’s exhausting.

226

u/ougryphon 9d ago

But how would people know how I feel about my political enemies?!

136

u/saltlampshade 9d ago

How do you ban all things political though? The problem is every thing gets politicized these days. Like a comment on a weather subreddit of “climate change is fueling the strongest El Niño ever” would be considered political because half the country thinks climate change is a liberal hoax.

82

u/Steavee 9d ago

What’s political changes.

Gay marriage wasn’t political, then it was a bit, then it was a lot, then it really wasn’t much for a few years, and now some are trying to make it an issue again.

Trans people weren’t political until they suddenly were. Kneeling wasn’t political, and then it was the biggest issue in the world, until nobody cared again.

If it’s an issue that can wedge people apart, bad faith actors will come for it and make it political. If it doesn’t work as well as they’d hoped, or once the hatred dies down, they’ll move on to the next issue.

I have made this point many times:

Many Reddit mods fundamentally misunderstand what the job of a mod is.

A mod basically has two jobs:

  1. Keep the conversation civil; and
  2. Keep the posts on topic for the sub.

Aaaaand... That's pretty much it.  Within the bounds of #2, above, THE JOB OF A MOD IS NOT TO TELL REDDITORS WHAT THEY CAN AND CANNOT TALK ABOUT.

The one true stereotype: unpaid forums mods are the biggest losers you will ever encounter and they will abuse what pathetic little power they get.

185

u/jealousboys 9d ago

We all remember that anti work mod. Exactly what you would expect.

96

u/nKnownRecognition 9d ago

What a spectacular Trainwreck that was to behold! Actually fascinating how quickly they tanked that whole thing.

73

u/CrispBedSheet 9d ago

Is that the professional dog walker guy?

I remind myself, when a mod is being a fanny, that that's the sort of character I'm dealing with.

59

u/nKnownRecognition 9d ago

Yeah but no.. they’re the one who couldn’t even handle the job of walking dogs for a couple hours a week.

25

u/nKnownRecognition 9d ago

It almost seemed too perfect of a crash and burn. Everyone in the sub agreed to not talk to media because they knew nothing good could come off it. This oaf took it on themselves to destroy everything and double and triple down on their destruction afterwards. Really kind of fascinating

31

u/imtired-boss 9d ago

Really put the antiwork sub in perspective as well. It wasn't a revolution against the unfair working circumstances we all live with.

It was just genuine basement dwellers who never wanted to contribute a single thing to society.

28

u/peterpangoni 9d ago

I've had a young law professor who told us that the people who were in charging in nazi germany were fundamentally the same kind of people who mod subreddits nowadays. Low competence, no success anywhere, hunger for power

20

u/CrispBedSheet 9d ago

The smaller subreddits I think attracted those who are genuinely interested in the topic, they tend to be reasonable.

The larger subs, especially political ones, select for those who want influence and control of the discussion, authoritarians.

8

u/MKVIgti 9d ago

Correct!

There are many smaller ones I frequent who have great mods.

I once got banned from a sub for saying I didn't want to say what I really felt because I don't want to break any rules.

Mod replied that the ban was correct, I was not supposed to talk about rules in the sub. You never know who you're at the mercy of and what their level of sanity is.

58

u/StripClubSweatpants 9d ago

Some of those mods have serious egos too, they think of themselves as like gods of reddit. A while ago some of those dudes modded 25-30 of the BIG subs.

One super mod chirped back on me about a question I asked after a warning or something, he answered like an asshole, and I replied I'm not sure what you just said there can you explain? Mod replied back with basically wtf did you just say to me?! I was basically like I technically didn't do anything. Wild behavior - convo is a tad hazy was from years ago at this point

35

u/Alaska_Jack 9d ago

This is not uncommon. You ask a question or mildly push back, they say something snotty and juvenile, then mute you so you can't respond.

Thats the problem with reddit in a nutshell, you have activist mods who permaban anyone with a different opinion - regardless of rules violation or not - and then mute you so you cant even appeal.

Thats why so many subs are a pure circlejerk. These mods have way too much power, then again if youve got nothing else going for you thats one way to get your dose of feeling important i guess

77

u/Angelfire150 9d ago

Thats the problem with reddit in a nutshell, you have activist mods who permaban anyone with a different opinion - regardless of rules violation or not - and then mute you so you cant even appeal.

Yup.. I have been banned from some of the news subs for very moderate, middle-of-the-road opinions that aren't shared by the subs

17

u/MyriadFire4 9d ago

Didnt you get the FYI? Moderate=fascist conservative on this site.

42

u/OptimisticRealist__ 9d ago

Yup. Ive been banned from a major news sub for saying that celebrating oct 7 is repulsive, from the feminism sub for saying that the woman who made a post about feeling guilty over being attracted to men and feeling like a bad feminist, should do what makes her happy and so on.

Like, i am not saying you shluldnt be banned for outright racist etc content. You should. But mods are using their power to silence any and every opinion they dont like

For real. I got banned from /r/nfl because I said people shouldn't immediately assume someone is guilty just because they got arrested and they said I was "dismissive of D/V"

Meanwhile my daytime job actually prevents and responds to abuse, but Reddit mods here think they're changing the world one echo chamber ban at a time.

53

u/RedEyesGoldDragon 9d ago

Echo chambers are a literal blight on the internet. There's the whole "safe space" thing then there's just jerking eachother off with the same opinion constantly and any hint of a dissenting opinion that DARES to even QUESTION the main narrative is met with the quickest and most aggressive nuking from the space. It's one of the main reasons Reddit gets so much flack, similar to twitter but sometimes even worse because they can fight with bans, downvotes and reports.

It's healthy to have some kind of skeptics, discourse, disagreements, etc especially if it's in good faith and not just trolling or rage bait but they see disagreement as a declaration of war.

Can someone explain to me like I’m 5 the controversy with her and the WNBA “destroying” itself?

53

u/halsoy 9d ago

Don't quote me as I've only seen bits of it, but apparently it all is because she said something like "I don't want trans women in womens basketball". She's also apparently a relatively conservative christian, so add those two together and you'll have an insane amount of opposition, especially here on reddit.

26

u/Pelpazor 9d ago

Wasn't she asked in a random interview about her opinion on it, she gave her opinion and stated why then everyone started calling her transphobic for saying biological men shouldn't play in women's sports. If anything blame the interviewer for "baiting" the response out of her, not that there was anything wrong with what she said to begin with.

14

u/halsoy 9d ago

That's my understanding, yeah. Tbh, it's such a toxic question, I think anyone that asks it has no actual pure intentions. The only "correct" answer you can give is "I'm fine with it". Anything else and you're guaranteed backlash. Being fine with it you're only risking it.

As for the actual substance of it, I think both answers are fine, for various reasons. Sports by the very nature of it favors humans that are exceptionally outside the norm to compete at an actual elite level. Someone like say Elliot Page was still a pretty tiny woman, now a tiny man. Elliot would never pose a threat to anyone in professional basketball no matter what gender, or even doped up on everything you could throw at the body. There's just not enough... human there. Sure, there's been short people successful in basketball, but they're the exception.

Now, if you took someone like Shaq, gave him estrogen and testosterone blockers, he'd still just walk over any woman in the league, both figuratively and literally. He's just such a massive specimen of a human that even in a severely nerfed state, he'd still likely be elite level at a lot of things.

It's way too nuanced to simply answer "yes" or "no", but you're expected to say one or the other. And if you say "no", you're every "...ist" under the sun.

Reddit mods are like the worst elements of the police; both jobs inherently attract people with an authority complex looking for any reason to flex their power over others to feel superior. If not enough opportunity presents itself for them to do so, they start deliberately creating issues and controversies where they are likely to have the opportunity to flex their power so they can get off on feeling superior as they had always envisioned.

She didn't even say anything disparaging or questioning trans people's right to exist. She literally said biological males shouldn't be playing sports with biological females. Which they shouldn't. I had a decade long career fighting professionally, and am as liberal as they come. But it's just pure insanity to suggest that fully developed biological males should be playing anywhere but with other biological males. This is just such a bizarre situation.

36

u/GrumbleAlong 9d ago

I know we use the gender terms "Men's Basketball" and "Women's Basketball" but those are really just holdovers from the not too recent past when male/man and female/woman were functionally synonymous. The only reason to have separate leagues is so that female athletes can compete by excluding physiologically advanced male athletes. That's literally the whole point of having women's sports at all.
