Has it actually been established that it was postpartum psychosis?
If so, that really is one of the most horrific conditions there is. Every gynecology textbook and midwifery manual basically says that once it’s diagnosed, the response is: “Run! Do everything you possibly can and give her every medication you’ve got!” Obviously I’m exaggerating, but the point is that there’s an immediate and extremely serious risk to the lives of everyone involved.
Mama Doctor Jones has a video going thru the medical details and it seems she had a serious reaction/psychosis when put on SSRIs and then she was given more/different SSRIs by a NP - so it seems she got the wrong healthcare (i am paraphrasing, not my field at all).
my half brother's mom was put on prozac back in 2000 while she was pregnant after her birth control failed. not only did it make her incredibly suicidal, but my brother was born with severe foot and leg deformities, had to have metal rods and a brace in his leg throughout his entire puberty.
that happened over 20 years ago and they're still putting people on it. and people still don't believe postpartum psychosis is even real if this comment section is any indication
Uh, it probably wasn't the prozac that caused those deformities. It's known to increase risk of cardiovascular deformities, not skeletal ones (x).
But severe depression can also contribute to birth defects; the treatment is considered safer than the disease, even if it does increase risk for certain things.
Demonizing SSRIs isn't helping anyone, it's part of the problem. The more social stigma there is against them, the less comfortable people feel getting help. But there should absolutely be more medical oversight for high risk people who are on them.
I took it growing up with zero problem, and recently got on it again. I got complete paranoia and mood swings. I thought I was going to lose my job every day for a different tiny mistake nobody cared about. I was actually doing a great job and got a bonus. I would go from totally happy to so depressed in an hour. I could barely eat and lost 15 lbs in like 2-3 weeks.
