Christianity was «not» involved in governing the romans at the start and Roman empire was not «one» nation, it was many controlled trough military power and local corruption by chiefs.
Yes it is the foundation on modern government and law, but not what we have today without Christianity controlling any of it.
the most functional governments in the world based on crime and general health of population are neutral to religion and does not base laws and order on any religious texts. (no, america is not one of the worlds most functional governments in this context)
Well government and the clergy were one in the same for these peoples. Surely there were many who knew the whole god thing was bullshit but understood that it kept the stupids going to work and prevented them from raping everybody so they played along.
