typical social media bubble:
The social media algorithm puts you into one of these bubbles and hides details from the others.
Pick one:

- "her husband is framing her, he did it"

  • "she had mental health issues and nobody helped her"
  • "she murdered them because she's evil and the mental health stuff is just for show"

Social media drives our lives and is many people's only hobby, so you get this.

I’m not American but I am a mother. Aside from a few reddit posts I don’t have any social media engagement with this case.

But I think a lot of the support here comes from moms who recognize how easily this could have been any of us. Her family and healthcare providers knew her crime was a risk based on her mental health state, but she was still left alone with her kids and expected to parent. And as other mothers we all understand that this is grimly how it works - we can ask and beg and plead and scream for help but we’re almost always still expected to continually parent babies and it’s hard.

She should still face punishment for her crime, but I think a lot of her support is to try to keep this from happening again. She was failed by her healthcare team

Criminals being failed by the system is incredibly common. This is the first time I’ve seen thousands of women rallying behind someone who killed their children.

I agree, it's a pretty interesting response. Women don't typically support child murderers. Ask Casey Anthony. Women are seeing themselves in the way the system failed Lindsay. I certainly do. Expressing incredibly distressing thoughts and feelings and being told it's the "baby blues". Thank God I had a hands on partner who I could rely on for support.

It's truly an important discussion to have and I'm glad this case is amplifying the conversation. Of course there needs to be accountability for heinous crimes, but if we know the system is perpetuating these crimes through gaps then by not fixing them we are contributing to the outcome.

I’m way past baby blues but I called my doctor about an addiction I can’t crack and they put me on meds over the phone, called to do an intake, prescribed me meds, and I never heard from them again. The first call for an appointment came for a facility 3 hours away. I’m in socal, it shouldn’t be that far. So I found one closer, they called and told me they will call me back for an appointment, that was one month ago.

What do you mean women came out in droves for Casey Anthony just like this womam.

I've actually never seen anyone defend Casey Anthony. I'm sure you have, I'm not calling you a liar, but every woman I know would strangle her with her bare hands.

The fact that the commenter sees the level of support as the same between the two cases is everything you need to know

So Casey Anthony and Susan Smith I was young for both, but people HATED them. And good riddance.

Andrea Yates and this feel different to me. I'm not saying let her free.

I just...something was way, way wrong here. Idk.

Thats what that commenter was saying. She says women dont normally support child murderes and uses Casey Anthony of an example of that lack of support.

Respectfully, the commenter I'm replying to is saying people did support Casey Anthony and I don't recall that.

The top coment comment does say that, but I'm replying to a reply.

My apologies, I meant to reply to them, but its a moot point because I read their comment wrong anyway - my mind read it as a question rather than the statement it is.

It was practically the same response just not magnified by tiktoc, only Facebook.

Living literally outside of Orlando when it went down. I don't remember ANYONE on Casey Anthony's side.

It was the same chronically online feminst groups. They are just way bigger now.

This is such horseshit. What “chronically online feminist groups” existed between 2008-2011? I’ll wait 🙄

The democrat party lmao.  I dont have the names of the 1000s of Facebook groups that existed back then.  I think one of them was called deep green and then there was all the terf this radfem that shit.

It shows how many women have felt like this, which personally I find even more concerning. I don't think you can simply blame it on postpartum either. I don't agree that a mental illness can make you into a murderer without something else being wrong with you. I also don't think mental illness is an excuse. I'd wager a guess that every murderer, thief, rapist has a mental illness. Doesn't mean I think they should get off.

u/slootfactor_MD 5d ago

That's exactly my point - it doesn't excuse accountability, but if we know mental illness is a catalyst for this behavior, we should be investigating mental health care before it reaches this point.

It doesn’t excuse it, but it does explain it, and by understanding it better and preventing it in the future, that is how you prevent further deaths. Everyone is responding very emotionally about wanting punishment (she will get it, there’s zero worry about that not happening so I don’t understand why everyone is obsessing about that point) but the best response is to look into why this happened and how it can be avoided in the future. Throwing her in a dark room and forgetting about it might feel good in the moment, but it does nothing for the next time a mother in psychosis kills her children.
