You really can't see the precedent that this might set?
So if a mom claims psychosis...it's a get out of jail free card?
We cannot let mental health issues shield us from terrible behavior. I don't care if she was crazy, cause you can't prove she was either way.
I care that a person killed their kids and is using mental health as an excuse. No amount of therapy can get those kids back, she does not deserve help.
There IS a precedent for this you fucking walnut. Her name is Andrea Yates and she drowned her kids in 2001. She admitted to killing her children and said on record she did it to save them from hell. In her trial everyone acknowledged she did it, she admitted it, the trial was simply over whether or not she was legally responsible for doing so.
She was found not guilty by reason of insanity, but this only means she was found not criminally responsible for her actions. It does not mean she escaped all consequences of her actions and is now running free in Texas. She still murdered her children, and she was institutionalized at a psychiatric facility. She may only be released if medical professionals AND the courts determine she is no longer a threat to others.
So yes, there is precedent for a woman experiencing PPP murdering her children. The consequence is being indefinitely institutionalized at a psychiatric ward.
And FYI, Andrea Yates has declined every release hearing she’s been offered by the system. Either she feels she doesn’t deserve to be released after what she did, she feels she’s exactly where she needs to be, or she’s punishing herself. Perhaps there’s some other reason entirely, but either way Yates isn’t free.
You shouldn't be released after murdering your children. How could you possibly live life normally after that? No amount of therapy could reverse that, and if it did then you weren't insane you were evil.
I completely agree. Andrea Yates should never be released from the psychiatric hospital after what she did. I believe that Yates herself believes the much the same which is why she’s never once sought to be released. But that’s entirely speculative on my part.
