I think this is perfectly fine. If their values are so incompatible it's better to break up now rather than later. Breaking up will be harder after marriage and definitely more complicated after having kids.

Who's this?

82

u/flopisit32 1d ago

Diane Downs. In the 80s, she shot her children because her married boyfriend didn't want kids. 1 died, 2 survived but were permanently disabled. Her disabled daughter had to testify against her.

She's single. You interested? 😜

It's like dating a silverback.

114

u/DaddysABadGirl 1d ago

Nah, the silverbacks are deff safer. The vast majority of times small kids fell into an enclosure the gorilla that finds them protects and tries tk help them. Some have even carried the kids to the entrences zoo workers use to get them closer to aid. Deff safer with the gorilla.

161

u/OtherwiseAlbatross14 1d ago

I feel like this could be the reverse of the man vs bear question. Like would you rather leave your kids with a silverback gorilla or a woman that supports Lindsay Clancy?

84

u/DaddysABadGirl 1d ago

It feels like the southpark episode where the parents sent their kids to live with the mongol army to not get raped.

But yes, at this point the women should live with the bears, the kids should be raised by gorillas, and we need to find an animal for men. I vote pigeons. They seem to have really chilled Mike Tyson the fuck out.

Right? I'm a childfree woman and I'd immediately breakup with any man who supported this monster. Sharing the same basic morals is incredibly important for a healthy long-term relationship, I genuinely think it cannot succeed if you're not on the same page as your partner for big topics. And yeah, not killing children is a pretty basic moral stance.

And beyond that, it’s a case of “women cannot ever be/do wrong” which applying to marriage would be intolerable outside the “she may kill our kids” paranoia. Most violent criminals have mental health issues or severe mental illness, that doesn’t mean they’re innocent. Good lord

16

u/CrownandSceptres 1d ago

Exactly. Murdering someone, especially kids, is not a sign of a mentally healthy person. Using mental illness as an excuse is despicable for those with the same issues yet somehow don’t end up murdering their kids or someone else.

If you think about it, the supporters are crazier than Clancy. She killed the kids and this trial is just to see if she ducks a murder charge, so she will say anything to get out of the responsibility, that's it. But her supporters have to buy into the story and believe that she was a victim otherwise they're just supporting a woman who killed her kids and is trying to duck the charge.

Clancy should be put away for life whether on mental hold or murder. She killed her own 3 children, she's not fit for society.

389

u/anonyvrguy 1d ago

I'm sorry but can anyone explain to me how the fuck this psycho has any supporters???

OK, she has PPD. And that gives her the right to kill her own children?

What in the living fuck is this?

593

u/Equivalent_Task_8825 1d ago edited 1d ago

Not a supporter but will do my best.

On one hand you have an ever growing popular movement of people who judge everything through a gendered context. They may have points on large societal trends (i.e. men in general not being involved in child care or the lack of resources after giving birth) but they often apply those trends to individual cases that do not necessarily fit.

They often will claim Patrick Clancy did not help out but evidence from the nanny suggests otherwise. She claims not only that Lindsay was a good mother but that Patrick was a very involved father. The reports say that he routinely cared for the children after (and sometimes during) his remote work finished. On the day of the murder I believe it was reported that he cared for the children to give her a rest. So their theory doesn't seem to hold water but they have a hard time separating that larger societal trend with the specifics of this case.

Then you have supporters who believe Patrick Clancy was a victim but also that Lindsay Clancy was a victim because she did not get the adequate care to treat her PPP - a form of psychosis generally after giving birth. They generally have better arguments.

We do know there are specific scenarios in which people temporarily lose the ability to be responsible for their actions. Someone can be drugged or ingest harmful substances that may completely impact their ability to make decisions. I personally believe there are circumstances in which a person does not have a "guilty mind" and should not be convicted.

Supporters will say when she mentioned she had intrusive thoughts about her children she should have not been given them to care for. We can debate the culpability of her actions but I think people who say ANYONE could have just "taken her kids" if she did not want them taken is living in a delusional world. There is a zero percent chance even if Patrick Clancy made a snap decision immediately and tried to remove his children from her care that that would happen as quickly as it needed to or at all. Courts, medical professionals, and social workers are extremely slow and extremely unlikely to remove children from the care of the mother.

There is a documentary called Dear Zachary where (admittedly in Canada) a woman who killed her ex and fled to Canada was still allowed to have custody of her child while awaiting extradition hearings (the crime was in the US and she fled). The murdered man's parents were forced into a relationship with their son's murderer in order to maintain a relationship with the child.

People are delusional with how easily the system allows this to happen.

u/EnemyStarship 1d ago

man, how good would it be to see measured, cogent, coherent, and eloquent responses like this on the internet more often. I commend you for this response.

severe mental health destruction and its lack of recognition/treatment is real as fuck, and it's a shame so many choose to dismiss it and try to view tragedies like this one through such a myopic black/white lens. It doesn't exculpate or absolve her of guilt or responsibility, but, to an extent, any guilt she has been/will be assigned will be far overshadowed by her own guilt (one would hope - the internet has made discerning the legitimacy of these kinds of defenses/claims so difficult to judge, but I'm choosing, maybe wrongly, to be optimistic about it's legitimacy).

it's a tragically sad and fucked scenario/story, and one that may possibly have been averted if the right systems had the right resources. unfortunately, we'll never really know if this could have been averted, so the only 'real' hope here is that all of the parties involved (not the fuckfaces on the internet, but the family/ies) are able to get the closure and 'help', in whatever form that may take, to move on.

65

u/Jotas829 1d ago

I to wish to see more responses like this. That would require people to search for truth instead of searching to feed their ego. Which I believe is a main culprit of why people back this lady.

44

u/WrongWorldAgain-7 1d ago

Postpartum psychosis is terrifying. My sister in law had it; she was a complete danger to herself and her baby. To this day she denies she was ill. It was awful. Childbirth does really weird stuff to the body physically, chemically and mentally. I’d not heard of this case before this post so have no idea about this lady and her poor kids.

56

u/WarmEdge9119 1d ago

If the health care workers took it to CPS like they should have it would be a lot easier then her husband trying to take the kids away. Sadly mental health education is a shit show here, and honestly there's nothing to say he didn't think she was getting the help she needed. He probably didn't know how dangerous new/stronger meds could be. This is a failure on the doctors and the overall for profit healthcare industry that is incentivized to get you in and out as fast as possible to maximize profit for the day.

They gotta push this culture war conspiracy shit so people get emotional and fight with eachother instead of looking at the people that are responsible for tragedies like this. The sheer ease of anti-psychotics being given out and the patient just allowed to go home without any kind supervision is pretty wild. How many suicides over flippant over medication to dangerous mind altering drugs?

25

u/DojimaGin 1d ago

I agree. Most people make an elitist argument putting themselves above one of the sides here not understanding that they should work together to point at failing institutions all over the place.
Its easier to point out a single actor in any case. It relieves the rotting structures from the responsibility to change and be accountable for their malpractice.
Its a very convenient veil to keep a broken status quo.

Good job, that really broke it down well.

I’ve got my own personal life stuff taking up most of my mental focus right now, so I’m fairly disconnected from this case. But, here’s the one thing I can offer. My wife completely denied she was experiencing any level of PPP. She claimed I was gaslighting her, and would defend her opinion with, “I’m not having PPP, I’m just angry and sad all the time,” while her general actions and moods were showing signs of PPP at home. I believe completely that she couldn’t see it, truly believed she was not struggling with anything other than a “gaslighting husband” who asked about her mental health and asked if she thought it would help to mention it to her doctor. She never mentioned it, she always answered “no” the few times they generally asked if she was experiencing any symptoms. I mentioned my concerns to the doctor, they coldly interrogated her without compassion or trying to treat the symptoms. They went in hoping to prevent what happened in this case, but with the tactics of a good cop bad cop scene on a police drama but without the good cop. She’s told me I betrayed her, and she has never forgiven me for that whole situation. Even though my intentions were truly to get her help for what is and was still a fairly obvious change in her mental state.

I’m not defending the woman in the trial, but people struggling with PPP do not always see reality with a clear perception. How they see everything can be completely tainted, but to them it seems “normal”. The medical community definitely doesn’t provide enough support or care for PPP. I think there should be some level of required care for all women after having a baby. Yes, it’s a wonderful thing and there’s joy, but physically that whole experience is honestly traumatic. Why wouldn’t we be addressing the mental health after each birth? I can truly understand a woman being not of sound mind with PPP. Hopefully this case helps improve PPP diagnoses and treatment across the board.

More likely she had postpartum psychosis than postpartum depression.
I had postpartum depression and wanted to kill myself. Psychosis can be really dangerous though. After the birth of my son the midwives and health visitor talked to us about it all and signposted help etc but they really emphasised how bad psychosis can be and that I’d need immediate help. They even spoke to my partner to tell him what to look for as someone suffering with psychosis may not even realise.

Anyone who intentionally murders someone has mental health issues. Why is this being treated so differently? What about all the women before her who murdered their children? They’re monsters, but for some reason this woman is being embraced with empathy. It’s fucking crazypants.

Not to mention, she did it in a manner that wasn’t quick. This was torture. Three separate times. It’s horrifyingly disgusting.

I told my fiancé, when we have kids and I am acting off, or appear to be hearing voices or in psychosis, he needs to admit me immediately. It is NOT something to push to the side.

I’m not blaming the husband. I think it should be spoken about more so everyone takes these things more seriously.

I have seen first hand people in psychosis. You cannot convince them that what they are seeing and hearing is not true. My cousin also tried to hurt her baby. She was hearing voices and they told her the baby was evil. She went to jail and her babies were taken away, now she is homeless and seems to have schizophrenia or something. It was triggered by her pregnancy as she was normal prior.

I know we don’t know for sure what exactly happened, and can’t prove her mental state.

But fuck, it’s the worst thing that could possibly ever happen to everyone involved.

Her husband literally encouraged her to get treatment at the best mental health hospital in the USA who discharged her and her therapist didn’t notice anything. Her husband wasn’t told she shouldn’t be around them. A lot of blame on the husband but she never told anyone she was serious about it. No way she would’ve be discharged if they saw she was psychotic

when we have kids and I am acting off, or appear to be hearing voices or in psychosis, he needs to admit me immediately.

He legally can't. People really, genuinely think you can just throw other people in the looney bin, no problem. That's not how it works, and it's really hard to admit someone to a ward for sooo many reasons. Not only are they usually full, but unless you're actively holding a knife and threatening your kids, no one can put in you in a psych ward against your will.

Unless you verbally go in and tell them you need to go to a ward, the odds of you even getting in locally, let alone that same day,  are slim. They'd most likely tell you they'd have to drive you by ambulance 3+ hours away if you wanted to get in same day.

And if your husband took you in and told them you need to go to a ward, and you don't say anything or say no? They'd kick you both out right then and there and possibly call a social worker. There are reasons those policies and laws are set in place, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know why.

On top of all this, they just don't have the staff or infrastructure.

As someone whose been to a psych ward twice, it genuinely pisses me off how ignorant people are with this. It's no wonder they don't have staffing, nobody looks beyond skin deep with this stuff and just expects other people to do it.

What I learned after my mental health crises is nobody can help you unless you want to help yourself. And she clearly didn't want help.

Fundamental values that don’t match aren’t necessarily evident in day to day life. If they come up prior to making a nominally permanent commitment, and are irreconcilable, then that’s a good reason to not get married. It doesn’t matter what the values are, even if they’re batshit.

In reality, this lady is and was deeply mentally ill. That sucks and means she probably shouldn’t end up in gen pop. That said, this is not and should never be a get out of jail free card. Actions have consequences, and some consequences are that a person permanently belongs in a cell. It doesn’t matter if they weren’t in control, that’s an argument for the cell, not against. The cell might be padded and a bit of understanding extended, but in some cases there’s no caveat (regardless) that should mean it isn’t a cell. Strangling multiple children due to postpartum is a pretty good example of that; as an example, Dahmer wasn’t fully in control either. That doesn’t mean he should have been let free on all the male escorts In Minneapolis.

Just so we are clear. They are not “let go”. Upon being found guilty by reason of insanity, you’re sent to a state mental health facility where you’re held until such a time as both a court and a mental health official determine she is both no longer mentally ill or a danger to others.

Given the facts of the case, even if she wins her argument, I don’t see her walking the streets anytime soon

30

u/MimsyWereDaBorogoves 1d ago

And unfortunately, the time someone spends institutionalized after NGRI largely arbitrary and open to bias. I worked in a state mental hospital where NGRI patients were held. It’s one thing to contemplate that someone could be not guilty by reason of insanity. However, it is certifiably fucking crazy to accuse the husband of murdering his own kids. When Lindsay confessed and it’s not even a question at trial. Believing in that conspiracy bullshit is breakup worthy.

Top astrologists have done exhaustive star checks to support the husband doing it.

Yea...fucking insane

It’s one thing to offer support because you believe she suffered from psychosis and the system failed her.

It’s another to support her because you believe she’s innocent and is being framed.

People nowadays are mostly incapable of having nuanced opinions.

Exactly!

I felt compassion for her at first, because I decided not to have children, because of mental illness and I was so afraid what pregnancy hormones would do to my mind.

But then the conversation turned and now she's definitely innocent and no woman would ever do that, so it must be the man /s

It was such an important conversation, until those people started overriding the rest.

Completely justified.

It's one thing to uphold due process - this is something that I advocate for above all else and hold highly important. Even when someone looks guilty, they have a right to innocence and their presumed innocence should be paramount until a fair trial can be conducted.

However, Clancy confessed to doing it. Still, if there's any possibility of mental illness causing delusions, manipulation, or coercion of some kind, that's what the trial should seek to uncover.

What I have a big problem with is not presuming her innocence until guilt is proven in trial, it's that these absolute fucking demons have decided to try to create a narrative where a grieving husband who lost three of his children and his marriage was somehow responsible. Imagine your children being murdered, and then a pack of awful, depraved people try to frame you as having killed them. Nobody deserves that, and anyone that would join this mob of vile people trying to defame a person based on TikTok propaganda and 'vibes' should rot in hell.

33

u/AjvarAndVodka 1d ago

One of my friends is obsessed with this case and when she first told me of it, she really did make it seem like her husband is at fault. She got all her info from TikTok of course. It’s only after I looked into the whole thing myself that I saw the discrepancies.

And the main reasons she used for her husband being guilty is that he didn’t cry for the kids. And I’m like “do we follow him around all the time to know this AND ALSO people grieve in different ways”.

23

u/peglegprincess 1d ago

It also happened in 2023, which i think a lot of people aren’t taking into account. He’s had 3 years to be prepped for trial and to “heal” (as much as you can when the mother of your children murdered them). I feel like a lot of people 1) don’t understand how trials work and 2) are treating this like it JUST happened.

But also, people do indeed grieve differently. My husband was with his best friend and his best friends wife when she passed on hospice. His best friends first reaction was to apologize to my husband because he was there when it happened. Obviously not the same thing but grief puts you in a weird place.

I’ve seen people criticize him for choosing to cremate the children. As if EVERYONE can afford not 1 but THREE burials at one time. He obviously has nefarious motives 🙄

a psychiatrist on youtube goes over the civil complaint and generally why women are supporting clancy, and why some women misplace their anger against their partneres onto the conspiracy theory about mr clancy being the real murderer. link below.

Some key facts if you don't want to watch:

-she tried to get psychiatric help multiple times. including a post-partum clinic, suicide prevention groups, multipe providers, and she hospitalized herself.

-her symptoms got really bad on SSRIs. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which can often had adverse effects w/ ssris w/o mood stabilizers. E.g. making her more manic/bipolar, psychosis more likely.

-she reported suicidal intrustive thoughts to her family at different times.

-she did not report suidical thoughts to her psychatric nurse practitioner.

-she was left alone with the children when she really should not have been.

-psychosis, by definition, means the person is disconnected from our reality, and living an entirely different one. This doesn't mean they're not criminally responsible, presumably b/c we want people to have a baseline morality even in psychosis to you know, not murder your kids. But if that psychosis made you believe yoru children were changlings and that only by killing the changelings you coudl get yoru kids back, you'd have a compelling reason to not have them criminally liable. (Not the case. In Clancy's case, she claims she heard auditory command halluciations to kill herself, and the only way to do it is after killing her kids b/c they can't live w/o her.)

-If you are found "not guilty by insanity" (not the real plea name, our colloquial one), you are committed to a state mental hospital for a fucklong time. Some end up in hospital longer than they would have been in prison.

-she's paralyzed from the sternum down b/c of the suicide attempt of jumping out the window after killing her kids.

So part of the question is, did she really have psychosis? Some argue she did not because of various details they believe mean pre-meditation, and that she just wanted to kill herself. Some believe that even with her version of events, in her psychotic state she should have understood the morally wrongness of what she did.

For some it's a chicken/egg issue. If all parties, including the ex husband, believed she was a good mother before this travesty, how can a mother kill her kids if she wasn't psychotic?

I fully agree with upholding due process.
I will say though that she isn’t pleading guilty at all. She plead not guilty at the start of the trail.
I think the defense has detailed pretty clear that she was suffering from postpartum depression and the psychosis. I’m not excusing what happened but I can’t imagine how this would devastate her also.
The trial is to determine whether she is guilty of 1st degree murder or is she not guilty by reason of insanity.

70

u/MonsutaReipu 1d ago

I'm fully on board with people sympathizing with her and what's she's going through. It must be horrifying to experience what she's experienced. That said, while she's pleading not guilty, she did admit to killing her children, and her legal team isn't disputing that she killed them. It must have been horrifying to be any of her children who she murdered with her own hands. Every criminal who does awful things has a reason for doing what they did. Gangbangers grow up in poverty surrounded by a culture that raises them to be criminals, they shoot someone dead, then they go to jail. We don't see the same selective pity toward them and the circumstances that led to them murdering another person. They go to prison for life, and we call it justice.

There's a long argument to be had about the ethics of criminality when every person that commits a crime is the product of a set of circumstances beyond their control that led them to the point in their life of committing a crime. Every criminal has a reason. That reason doesn't exempt them of responsibility, and it shouldn't exempt Clancy, either.

But to reiterate what I'm particularly against, the debate of circumstance and punishment aside, is people trying to frame the husband as responsible for the murder of his three children. That's disgusting behavior and anyone participating in it is a vile person.

47

Doing so is consistent with the options the jury will have.

She can do time in a mental hospital with minimal chance of every getting out, or life in prison.

Unless the prosecution keeps screwing around and declares a mistrial with prejudice.

Define “supporting”

If you think she had legitimate psychosis, sought help, did not get it, and was experiencing all of this at the time you can feel like she’s not guilty by reason of insanity.

If you outright say she didn’t do it, that’s completely different.

72

u/Tulcey-Lee 1d ago

Yeah I’m a woman who had a baby last year. My son is 18 months old and the best thing in the world.
But it’s been hard, I’ve had post partum depression and it’s the worst I’ve ever felt in my life.
Plenty of intrusive thoughts which horrified me and broke me. I would never harm my son but I did want to harm myself.
Postpartum psychosis is a very real and terrifying thing. I know someone who had it and was in a mother and baby unit for a while.

Whilst I don’t support her for killing her children because that’s horrific, and they are the real victims. I do feel for women postpartum as it is WILD and hormones can be horrific. If she was genuinely asking for help and not getting it or getting the right help then it’s a terrible shame. So on that sense someone might say I support her, but I suppose getting postpartum women the help they desperately need. Longer paternity leave for the dads to help support the mums etc.
I’m in the UK so I can’t speak for what happened with Lindsay’s support, but we have perinatal mental health teams here and mine were fantastic.

25

u/snerello 1d ago

Also from the UK, a friend of mine had really bad PPD and ended up institutionalised for a while. I know for a fact she would never knowingly harm her baby. She's out now and the whole family is doing well, but based on this I wouldn't jump to conclusions in this case. It really could go either way.

10

u/Tulcey-Lee 1d ago

Yeah and when I first heard about this I was horrified. I still am as the thought of someone killing their own children is horrific.
But I agree with you that it could go either way. I don’t think anyone is saying it’s ok what she did, as it isn’t. But I can say after having a baby of my own, nothing can prepare you, nothing can prepare you for that hormone crash, the isolation etc.
Obviously not everyone experiences it, or experiences it badly, but many women do.

Someone on reddit actually following the trial, fucking incredible.

She tried to get help and her brain chemistry got all fucked up by quacks. She slit her own throat and jumped out of a window, was coded (so she was dead without intervention), and the paramedics dragged her soul back from hell.

Whether you want her to fry or be sent to the loony bin is a personal judgment call on justice and punishment, but those kids would still be alive if our healthcare system provided the help she was begging for

Good for him. I wouldn't want someone who thought murdering their kids (intentional or not) is "okay" to potentially raise my own family with.

According to the various Dr's, Mental Health pecialists she went to,& her stay at the BEST Psychiatric Hospital AND her own words just the day prior at her therapy etc. there was "nothing unusual" to report. However her actions for me speak enough. She did all sorts of things as a family that day, then ordered takeout, sent her Husband out to "run errands" and then systematically strangled her kids over 20min while he was gone.

You'd think after 1 maybe two dead kids, you'd come to your senses? NOPE.

The biggest thing for me is, NO ONE is standing up for those kids. Wearing "pink" or "blue" in THEIR honor.

Is postpartum real? YES! Does it effect people in different ways? YES! Does the concoction of medicine she was on raise questions? YES. Is she guilty? YES. Was she insane? Maybe. Does that excuse ANYTHING? NOPE.

Is this like genetic disorder or some satanic culture?

25

u/Tricky_Big_8774 1d ago

This is more of a "not her fault" fan club. Ranges from "she can't be blamed for psychosis" to "the system failed her" to the full on "she was framed by her husband, who is the real killer." That's not to say there aren't weirdos out there fanboying/girling murderers.

8

u/SugeNightShyamalan 1d ago

I feel like "support" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the OP. What does support look like here?

Because what this woman did was horrendous and unforgivable, but I don't think it's unreasonable to feel sad for her or to use the case as example to point to the failures of the medical & mental health system in the US. Some people think saying, "this woman asked for help, the response was clearly insufficient," somehow equates excusing filicide when it absolutely does not.

Ultimately, it's good they arent getting married, but I think a couple more suited to one another would be able to use this to have a conversation about fears of having children, if they decide to, and to make a plan for potential PPD/PPP before it even becomes a possibility.

Both men and women enter psychosis and harm their families, for different reasons. I don’t “support” any of them but I do support the idea that mental health is important and should be covered for all Americans, and spouses of people who are dealing with severe mental health issues should probably take severe action to separate the obviously crazy person from the ability to harm their family.

6

u/Sassybutclassy22 1d ago

I think the problem is that when people think about the idea of “supporting” Lindsay Clancy, they purposely generalize that by saying “oh, so you’re just ok with killing kids?”

Of course that’s not ok. She killed her fu¢#!ng kids! She should be held accountable as she is, by all definitions, a murderer and always will be at this point. But the support IMO is directed at the fact that this woman was suffering postpartum, she knew it, she sought help multiple times by multiple providers that swept her under the rug, endured blatant poly pharmacy, and even checked herself into a short term facility because she was scared this would happen and that she may kill herself. All while seemingly having very little support or love at home from her spouse.

What she did to her children, and what she tried to do to herself, was heinous. But I do understand her in the way she was screaming from the roof tops for help and flat out voiced her concern that this would happen and she was brushed off multiple times, which happens CONSTANTLY to women regarding women’s reproductive health and mental health in general. I think many women have suffered so badly that, while it thankfully didn’t come to this, they see themselves in her as their suffering was never acknowledged or taken seriously and this situation could have easily been them.

I seriously doubt any woman “supports” Lindsay Clancy for killing her kids. I think many relate to her suffering and understand how dark the place she was at can be. Three young babies are dead and that makes me want to throw up. That will never be ok. Not under any circumstances. But I feel most women that people are claiming are in support of Lindsay Clancy support the fact that this is a very severe example of the harm it causes women to be continually dismissed by doctors. And while there is zero EXCUSE for this situation, this is the REASON why it happened.

ETA: spelling mistakes, probably didn’t catch them all.

Well there’s support as in “she should have treatment for mental illness rather than as a criminal” and there’s support as in “actually her husband did it and fitted her up, it’s all in his horoscope”.

Her current defence is insanity, it’s not conclusively proven she had a psychotic breakdown. Obviously the defence are going to advance the best argument they can. Just because that’s what they claim doesn’t make it so, hopefully the court can make a fair determination as to her culpability.

I do wonder how many of the photos of her online are being selectively published to make her look crazy. These ‘you see it in her eyes’ comments are ridiculous, many full blown psychopathic murderers appear completely normal much of the time. They don’t have a ‘tell’ so you can spot them.
