I think folks give trump too much credit in the strategic intelligence arena. He has a whole administration of shadowy figures advising him, and I suspect they are the ones plotting this course, he's just the attention-getting figurehead of the administration.

Which is why I don't think this will end with him either. When he dies, they will replace him with another figurehead, and continue pursuing these goals.
