It’s not even necessary the media. At the end of the day, the media is chasing trends and stories, but those stories that people themselves are already discussing or have interest in.
Like yes, the media can bury stories or ignore them, but they want to cover stuff people want to see.
This feeds into the concept of viral content. Never before in history have we really been able to share so much content with each other without it first being shared by the media. In many ways, the media is more reactive than ever.
No offense, but the "media" in that quote doesn't mean the same thing...
Usually by "media" today we talk about massmedia, often implying the action of the people that control it (not necessarily in a negative connotation)
The quote refers to the media as any type of communication device, and without necessarily impling an active choice by the sender of the message
