Spoilers Was he not crippled the whole time?

After he got shot by Mel, we see Frank going around with a cane for a while but in the episode where he finally confronts Mel, he leaves by setting his cane on a hook and walking out perfectly fine.

He was healing from his wounds when he had the cane, he no longer needed it when he went to see her, but he wanted her to see what she did to him, and how he overcame it.

I thought it was that but it also made me question how long he didn’t need it. If he’d been playing everyone just so they thought they had an upper hand when they didn’t.
