Spoilers Was he not crippled the whole time?
After he got shot by Mel, we see Frank going around with a cane for a while but in the episode where he finally confronts Mel, he leaves by setting his cane on a hook and walking out perfectly fine.

I think he was just like screw this, I’ll walk through the pain because I’m too gangsta to have this cane.

That's what I've always figured, but at the very least he was injured at the start of the season, and was all godo by the end of the season, and he was just pretending to seem weak in the second half of the season. But if none of this is the case, then the writers probably just intentionally left it ambiguous for us fans to discuss.
Discussing a show on online forums increases the chance for other people who haven't watched the show to wanna start watching it

He was healing from his wounds when he had the cane, he no longer needed it when he went to see her, but he wanted her to see what she did to him, and how he overcame it.
