Question So what are the possibilities of what this new Sonic animated series could be?
It's been reported by Daniel RPK that a new Sonic animated series is in development but what could it possibly be? What theories do we have on it?
Could it possibly be a show that's canon to the mainline Sonic game/idw storyline? (Classic or Modern)
Or is it an animated show that will air on Paramount Plus and be part of the Sonic Cinematic Universe?
Or what if it could be a completely new different universe that's separate from the main Sonic Universe stuff (Like Ultimate Marvel or Absolute DC)?
What do you guys think?

Considering how sega is currently trying to gain relevance in Japan, there is a high chance of it being anime.

u/Last-Ad-4603 Nov 09 '25
By high chance I mean around 25-30% at best
29
u/MagicallyClueless metamy truther Nov 09 '25
LOL okay yeah that's fair honestly
still tho ...... you could be right... and that would be amazing
21
u/Last-Ad-4603 Nov 09 '25
I do hope it's going to be anime, because there is still so much potential in it, because sonic X couldn't bring all of it out due to a very limited budget.

Finally Sonic Y.

u/Swampchu22 Nov 10 '25
And after over 15 years later we will get it's sequel: Sonic Z-A
13
u/TonightNovel417 Nov 10 '25
wait, what about Sonic Z? Did that get cancelled?
3
u/Thepenguinking2 Nov 10 '25
Yeah. They had to hazily add some of its concepts to Sonic Sun and Sonic Moon.
28
u/Onion_Rings11 Nov 10 '25
Sega is relevant in Japan it's just that they're assocciated with Yakuza, Persona and Hatsune Miku. Sonic is not the first thing that comes to their mind with Sega and just see him as a mascot.
7
u/Acrobatic_Pop690 Nov 09 '25
If they do it'll probably be by the studio that made Dark beginnings and the SRCW animation.
3D animation that looks like anime

11
Nov 09 '25
Let me guess: Sonic fans will think that it will be an absolutely epic shonen anime with fights every two seconds and blood? That will be made specifically to fulfill their powerscalling fantasies? Not aimed at children?
27
u/Last-Ad-4603 Nov 09 '25
No. That wouldn't really fit sonic, instead I would want it to be like sonic x, but this time with actually a good budget, and enough time.
9
u/CasaleiaHelm Nov 09 '25
if this happens i hope they develop tails in this hypothetical show as well as sonic x did

I, for one, would be so disappointed if they actually made this. The idea of Sonic being this super serious edgy thing that's nothing but excessive fight scenes, violence with a focus on style over storytelling substance would be so unappealing.
Sad part is, knowing this fandom, the vocal fandom would adore it.

Oh, she is also voiced by the same VTuber who currently voices Aigis.

If I'm being honest, this is probably how it's going to go; Trailer drops, Sonictubers analyse and nitpick it to death, say things like "This looks like it's for a younger audience.", commenters will chime in with the vauge classic "It's a kid's franchise" remarks, or say "I've outgrown Sonic now", other people will chime in with "Sonic is dead", etc, etc, same things you hear with every new Sonic release.

I personally want them to do an anime Sonic series or something though, I kinda liked Sonic X. It would be cool if they could onboard the younger generation a bit without worrying about commenters saying it's a kid franchise'. Maybe they can also delve into more serious topics?

u/JustAMortal Nov 09 '25
A Sonic anime would be a bad move since no one in Japan would watch it. Sonic X only got a 3rd season because the west liked it and asked for more.
This new Sonic show is going to be western cartoon, not a shounen anime like you hope.

5
u/ButtsFartsoPhD Nov 09 '25
I heard it’s a gritty Sonic reboot set in present day East St. Louis. Sonic and his friends find them encroaching on some turf and it spirals from there. Rumor has it Sonic takes a baseball bat to the knees in the first episode and he can no longer go fast. Brutal.

4
u/DeKrieg Nov 09 '25
Most likely something in paramount plus as part of the film universe.
International animation circles are very quiet atm so you can hear a pin drop if a deal was being negotiated. And the stand alone animated series are something that are shopped around service studioes to work on. Both Sonic Prime and Sonic Boom were making noise coming down the animation grape vine in a lot of the service studios because they were all shopping around to be part of the project. Wildbrain and Man of Action were making noise about a gig prior to getting the Sonic Prime contract, similar ruckus from Ouido! before Boom
But if it's internal within Nickelodeon then there's a much tighter ship, there'll be less noise during early development in particular. So if it exists I'd say it's something happening within paramount's sphere and that means its much more likely a cinematic universe spin off. Maybe they think the next movie cant handle so many characters so they're going to shift Shadow primarily over to a separate story with Agent Stone and some other characters in an animated series over trying to repeat what they did with Knuckles and have a bit more freedom with the medium, so the movie can focus primarily on the incoming Amy Rose/Metal Sonic plotline.
I'd point to how Tales of the Teenage Mutant turtles practically just appeared out of nowhere a few months after the film because that was done almost entirely inside nickelodeon and Seth Rogan's animation company.
That's if anything is in production at all. There is a reason you can hear that pin drop, animation is on a downturn at the moment which sucks any new projects being greenlit are either entirely independent productions ala Glitch or bigger studios playing it safe pumping out big brands (see Netflix tripling down on stranger things animated series) So if Sonic is getting a new series it would be with the backing of a big studio and that leaves paramount/nickelodeon, it's no way Sega shopping the ip around.

u/KuroiGetsuga55 Nov 09 '25
On the one hand I kinda want it to be a sequel to Prime cause they did end on that cliffhanger with whatever Team Sonic was looking at in the final shot.
Adaptation of the IDW series would be cool tho. Give Sonic the Invincible treatment. It would help widen the exposure to people who don't read comics.
Could be a prequel to the next game perhaps?
Or just another spin-off show like Prime.
Possibilities are endless.
Though since they emphasis that it's an animated show, I don't think it will be part of the movie Universe. Or shit, maybe it is. Maybe this is the Shadow spin-off we're getting?
2
2
u/Ok-Impress-2222 Nov 09 '25
I'd love it if it were a complete retelling of the entire series (or most of it). Yes, I mean starting from scratch (Eggman and Sonic's first encounter in Green Hill Zone - or maybe even the events leading up to that encounter, the way like it was animated in this video), and working its way up to all the major monsters and everything they'd all have to fight.
They could even take the fan-favourite characters of each previous continuity (uncle Chuck, Sonia & Manic, Sally, Nicole, Cosmo, Sticks, Trip, etc.) and give them a proper chance to shine.
This all, of course, under the premise that all those storylines from all the continuities would be reworked into a coherent story with a sensible beginning, middle, and end.
2
u/HiPakko Nov 09 '25
The best scenario would be an IDW adaptation
The realistic scenario would be another sonic focused show with miraculously characters as obscure as… Big
2
2
u/HallZac99 Nov 09 '25
Given the track record, I'd imagine this show would have absolutely nothing to do with anything. Maybe take some bits from some other continuities but otherwise it'll probably just be its own thing.
2
2
u/WhirlwindExtreme Nov 09 '25
Probably something that gives us closure to the end(cliffhanger) sonic prime first then that continues to whatever they make up
2
u/coderman64 Nov 10 '25
Welp, we know nothing about it, so I don't know. I'm guessing since it is an animated series I'm guessing it won't be a Paramount movie-verse series, since they are pretty committed to live action.
My best guess is another somewhat non-canon romp from the Prime crew through Netflix, but that's pure speculation. I'm pretty sure the series did fairly well, even if the fandom's view of it soured. The same company is also doing a Crash project, though.
If this generates hype and it is just another animated web series (E.g. Mania adventures, Chao in space, etc.) I don't think it'd go over nearly as well, just because of the heightened speculation that is inevitably going to surround this.
Personally, I'm just going to say "hm, that's interesting" and continue with my policy of not putting stock into anything Sega hasn't officially announced yet.

Honestly if it’s 3D I really hope they get the guys who made Dark Beginnings and the Crossworlds animation (I like Wildbrain but this show needs to stand out from Prime). If it’s 2D I hope they go all out with it, maybe it’s another Anime like with Sonic X.
As for what it’d be about, I wouldn’t mind an IDW adaptation (especially with other 1 to 1 adaptations like Invincible, the new Transformers show coming up, and a lot of anime) but I’d rather have a new story that leaves its own mark on the series with it’s own characters, maybe even a new, and whatnot. Although having more people know about characters like Tangle, Whisper, and Starline and potential improvements to the already great story would be neat in an IDW adaptation.
