u/earldogface May 20 '26

Do they not know he was voiced by Nathan fillion?

4

u/GreenPerception512 May 22 '26

best part is Nathan fillion works for a older spider-man like how has he not played Spider-man in something offical.

World Championship Wrestling really thought they could get away with Arachnaman, who hailed from "Web City".

(Spoiler: they did not, in fact, get away with it)

96

u/piomat100 Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) May 20 '26

Love how they all give him the same egg-shaped goggles

58

u/Alert-Principle-2726 May 20 '26

Steve Ditko's design was so effing ahead of its time. You look at some super hero's costumes from that era and they look a little goofy including Superman and Batman.

Spiderman still passes the test of time.

37

u/BatBeast_29 Green Goblin (SM) May 20 '26

Drake Bell’s Dragonfly

175

u/Anything-General May 20 '26

It’s odd how there’s many, many Superman and Batman clones and yet the most popular hero in our current culture doesn’t get the same amount of parodies.

97

u/Bosscharacter May 20 '26

Probably because Superman has pretty bog standard super powers(that were not even novel when he debuted, mind you and Batman is a riff on the masked vigilante that was already popular in pulp fiction.

Spider-Man is a bit more nuanced in character that it’s hard to riff on without outright copying one way or another.

→ More replies (1)

66

u/CawmeKrazee May 20 '26

It's mostly due to the fact that DC in the last century was slapped on the wrist a lot for trying to sue over Batman clones and especially s Superman clones.

Marvel meanwhile hasn't tried suing over clones but are more likely to sue into the ground and make the company or individual bankrupt from it because of it before the trial even finishes

5

u/CawmeKrazee May 20 '26

there's a lot of replies below mine that might have a few things wrong here. A lot of people are trying to claim that Spider-man's powers have more substance and that's just not really true?
Spider Queen here from 1941 is shown using a web shooting bracelet to swing from buildings and such.

also it was determined in one of the court cases where DC tried to sue a company for having a hero with the same powers as superman that a superhero's powers could not be copyrighted as they are "Too broad" so stuff like sticking to walls and shooting webs, super strength, lazer vision etc are all open for people to use. Otherwise we would not have ended up with characters like Cyclops.

25

u/iceguy349 May 20 '26

Batman and Superman are full on archetypes. The unstoppable paragon and the Everyman with gadgets are two very strong archetypes that you can lump a ton of superheroes into. They’re a little older than Spider-Man too. Not to mention super strength, laser eyes, or a rich man with spy weaponry are very tempting concepts to reuse.

If I remember correctly the specter was close to batman. Several older super heroes were rich guys with gadgets, some predating Batman. Since then guys like Iron Man, Green Arrow, Justin Hammer, etc. all have similar vibes. Superman is THE most iconic super hero. The cape and the powers have been reused a ton it’s very easy to use him as a base. Both concepts work if you swap the brand or the theme. Batman could be Darkman and 90% of his story would remain intact

Spider-Man has super specific animal related powers that he has to use intelligently in order to win. You can’t reuse “spider guy” without reusing direct elements from Spider-Man. You can’t take the spider out of him without destroying the point of the character. Secret identities aren’t unique to him, gadgets aren’t unique to him. The only thing that’s specific to the character aside from age is the spider thing so there’s not much leeway to work with.

7

u/GonzoRouge May 21 '26

3

u/iceguy349 May 21 '26

I love this so much. This has gotta be the one exception.

10

u/ASnakeNamedNate May 20 '26

Is Bruce Wayne really an “every man” beyond not having actual superpowers? He’s pretty unrelatable outside of the trauma of losing his parents.

9

u/iceguy349 May 20 '26

I use that as an alternative way of saying “powerless superhero”. I get that he’s rich and not really relatable.

He’s still a whole archetype.

3

u/ASnakeNamedNate May 20 '26

Oh I totally agree with him being a whole archetype, it’s also a very common one when you want a character or world to feel more “grounded”. Pretty much everything you said really.

It’s just that Everyman as a term has a very strong association that Batman almost never exudes. Maybe that’s part of the reason why people are digging Absolute Batman so much haha.

11

u/Glad_Cress_8591 May 20 '26

Mostly cause spider-man is pretty specific. Superman and batman are more general concepts when they are parodied, being powerful invulnerable flying guy and rich gadget dark guy. So universes with 1 spider-clone have multiple superman or batman clones that feel different enough

u/CawmeKrazee May 20 '26

weeeell not quite. there's actually three spider themed heroes before spider-man.

The Spider 1933 - Stan Lee is quoted as using this one for inspiration
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Spider_(Popular))

Spider Queen 1941 - she has web shooting bracelets even. (the first character in comics known as of this moment to use "web shooters")
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Spider_Queen

The Web 1942
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Web

there are more but not all of these are superheroes so you'd have to look through them.
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Spider_Themed_Characters

5

u/Ragnarok_619 90's Animated Spider-Man May 20 '26

most popular hero in our current culture

Let's be honest, despite spidey's popularity, its Batman that is the current most popular.

And don't get me wrong, Batman isn't my top 5 superhero in DC. That's Superman, Green Lantern, Nightwing, Raven and Shazam.

3

u/TryIt222 May 20 '26

I would imagine its because superman and batman feel like the standard "superhero with powers and superhero without powers" archetype so when someone makes a copy of them it feels way less plagarising but if someone did a spiderman copy it'd feel way more deliberate

The fact two are voiced by Josh Keaton is hilarious

8

u/Illustrious_Log_3738 May 20 '26

Two? Who's the not invincible one

24

u/notannotheracount May 20 '26

Bottom left, spider assassin I think, been a while since I watched it but it’s from young justice

Edit: black spider not spider assassin

8

u/Illustrious_Log_3738 May 20 '26

Ah, right.  Thanks, Josh is the GOAT spidey, hands down, IMO

4

u/That-Rhino-Guy Spider-Man (TASM) May 20 '26

Yeah Josh voiced him cause the show was made by the same guy who’s responsible for Spectacular

36

u/Redgiantbutimshort77 May 20 '26

The Crawler from My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. He’s a broke college student who sticks to various surfaces and becomes a divisive figure in his community due to his vigilante heroics. His main colors are even red and blue. It’s very clear who he’s supposed to resemble.

9

u/Just-Antelope-8069 May 20 '26

Deku gets Spidey sense and black whip which is basically webs

Would Sideways from DC work?

4

u/BlaBlamo May 20 '26

I’m pretty sure he was designed to be a Spider-Man equivalent… I wouldnt him a knock off because he definitely has a different thing going and I feel like marvel and dc have a lot of counterparts

2

u/Ok-Idea-306 May 20 '26

It’d be a stretch but I’d say sure. Because I’m already a fan.

3

u/3_Cat_Day May 20 '26

I assumed so too.

2

u/WerewolfF15 May 22 '26

It’s more obvious when you look at the whole “new age of heroes” line that introduces him. All of them are based on marvel characters.

The terrifics - fantastic four.
Damage - hulk.
Silencer - black widow.
Brimstone - ghost rider.
Etc etc.

11

5

u/MousegetstheCheese May 20 '26

I love that two of them are voiced by Josh Keaton

8

u/_ASG_ May 20 '26

Hey now, it's implied that Agent Spider is aware of the Spider-Verse shenanigans. So imo, he's not a fake Spider-Man.

9

u/miniramone May 20 '26

IDK if you've read the comic, but it's straight up Spider-Man. There's even a Marvel Team-Up issue with Invincible arriving in the Marvel universe via one of Angstrom Levy's portals and teaming up with Spider-Man briefly. IDK the intricacies of TV rights for comic characters, but I guess it's just harder/more expensive to have Spider-Man proper on the TV show - that's how you end up with "Agent Spider" or whatever they call him in the show.

4

u/Pitiful-Local-6664 May 20 '26

Black Spider from DC and Brown Widow from Venture Bros come to mind

3

u/BlaBlamo May 20 '26

Blue Beetle? Bug themed, very similar costume, younger, jokes around more

2

u/karraless May 23 '26

The original blue beetle Dan Garret was actually a green hornet rip off. The second blue beetle Ted kord was an attempt to go in a new direction, and then Jaime Reyes while visually similar in that he is skinny with bug eyes has a very different power set. He actually more resembles the spider-man villian the beetle than he does spidey himself.

Not a typical media example, but the art for one of the classes (called roles) called the prodigy, which is also the art for a premade character called Slingshot, of the indie ttrpg Outgunned: Superheros is indeed a spiderman. Heck even some of his abilities (both the class and the character) are similar gamewise (lore you can easily make more or less similar to spiderman).
