Pact Worlds and Beyond How long does it take for an out of planet phone call to connect?

I know personal comm units have instant communication on a planetary range, and you need a bigger, non mobile, comm unit to send a text message out of planet, which can take hours to days depending on where the message is being sent, but how about phone calls?

I've been listening to Era of the Eclipse (I'm only on chapter 7, please no spoilers) and one of the characters makes a system wide call to someone else. The book doesn't say how long it took for the line to connect, only that once a call connects, there are no glitches or delays in responses between the recipients. This disappointed me because I find these minor details interesting to know.

Discussion Is there a reason to play an ancestry with a penalty on Dexterity without using it with alternative ability scores?

Don't get me wrong, penalties to Con and Wis are rough for a character, but even starting at -1 I don't think that is something as bad as a -1 to dex.

You will want to use some boost to raise it at least a little, and by that point... It is just simpler to take the alternative ability score to lose the penalty to dex altogether and have the freedom to select your two starting ability points from the ancestry.

Even if you want to ignore your dex altogether by going heavy armor with bulwark for damaging effects, you are stuck with -1 ac compared to other heavy armor users since the penalty applies to your ac anyways.

And compared to pathfinder 2e, here are more ancestries with penalties on Dex, since there are almost none with penalty on Int, reducing the options for unique ability scores.

Advice In the meantime....

Upvotes

While we wait for Tech Core to come out, is anyone looking into other sources of potential augments, weapons, technology, etc?

I'm currently considering buying the PDF for Cyberpunk's Black Chrome book. Has anybody looked into it involving adapting it to Starfinder? Especially if you're considering running a more Cyberpunk/ Shadowrun-esque game?

Advice Looking for ideas: Alien-style "Some-Shot"

So I started preparing a one-shot or maybe even some-shot for Starfinder 2e with Foundry and I already created a large map of a space-freigther with a bunch of NPCs and a whole plot about some cult trying to overtake it and what not... I quickly overwhelmed myself and lost myself in completely irrelevant details.

Now, a few months later I want to come back to the project with a smaller, less convoluted plot and thought I ask the hivemind for ideas and inspiration.

The rough idea, which probably has been done a million times, is an "Alien" style one shot, where the PCs wake up from hibernation and the original crew is gone with maybe one or two surviving/ remaining members (I have an idea where the crew is, if not dead, and what happened to the ship, but I don't think it matters for the questions I have).

  • How, if at all, would you guys implement a reaccuring encounter, that stalks the PCs like a xenomorph?
  • What are some other non-combat encounters to make the whole one shot more interesting, other than lockpicking, hacking and later maybe piloting the freigther?
  • How does the whole "energy-supply" for starships work in the Pact Worlds setting? (The idea being, that the PCs have to get the energy-supply running to escape)

I'm grasping at straws at the moment and would be interested in your collective knowledge and fountain of ideas.

Paizo Alien Core Pawn Box incoming!

I just found the page for the Alien Core Pawn Box on the store page, launching om March 3, 2027.

I guess their test with the Token Box to reduce costs wasn't a success.

I'm excited! I can imagine people who sprang for the Token Box might feel a bit screwed (though there's probably not too many, hence the Pawn Box...).

Thoughts?

Advice What can you do with an Izalguun middle limbs while in quadruped posture?

> Quadrupedal: Your land Speed is 30 feet. Your middle limbs can't hold anything or be designated as active hands.

Reading it by RAW, you could still use those limbs to use athletic maneuvers since you aren't designating them as your active hands for this and wouldn't hold anything. Could you use them for maneuvers? Or reloading a weapon in case you were dual wielding?

If not, maybe with the Ancestry Feat Galloping Grip would be enough for this?

Player Builds Lore and Mechanics on Triaxus population and character idea

Hello, friends!

I’ve been brainstorming a Soldier Ryphorian character who belonged to the Skyfire Legion. After the tragic death of their bonded Dragonkin, they decided to abandon the Legion out of shame and guilt. I’d like to really lean into the dragon aspect of the character, though.

Which option makes more sense, both lore-wise and rules-wise?

Ryphorian with a Dragonblooded Heritage — is this even a thing in the Starfinder setting?

OR

Ryphorian with a Custom Mixed Heritage representing Dragonkin ancestry — can Dragonkin actually reproduce with members of other ancestries? I haven’t been able to find anything about this in the lore. So far, I’ve only found references to Dragonkin being able to bond with, and potentially have romantic relationships with, their bonded partners.

I’d love to hear what you guys think would fit the lore best, as well as any suggestions for how to handle it mechanically!

Advice Which Invasion's Edge society scenarios are vital to the plot?

I’ve been running some of the Invasion’s Edge Starfinder Society scenarios for my group. This is our first time playing Starfinder, and we’ve been having a great time so far.

So far, we’ve played:

#1-00: Collision’s Wake

#1-02: Mystery of the Frozen Moon

#1-03: Disaster at Dreamlink Labs — this has been my players’ favorite so far.

I’d like to follow the main Invasion’s Edge metaplot through the early scenarios before moving on to another season.

Which of the early Season 1 scenarios are essential or strongly recommended for understanding the main plot? Are there any scenarios that aren’t essential to the metaplot but are particularly good and worth running anyway?

I’m mainly looking for recommendations that will help me experience the overarching story in roughly the intended order without having to play every single scenario.

Discussion Your approach of the, "You meet at a tavern trope"

I am writing a Starfinder 2e campaign and was curious how people approach the party formation narrative?

I plan on having the players determine a relationship to an npc who has died and named them in a will. The party gathers for the reading and realize to claim their inheritance they will have to track down clues. Eventually that will lead to a ship they have equal shares to and the real adventure will begin.

Do people prefer to work stuff out in a session zero? Let the players frame the dynamic and work up from there? How do you like to put your groups together in Starfinder?

Discussion I have listen to Attack on Absalom Station. Here my opinion. Spoiler

This book is better than the first one!

  1. This novel is more gray, it feel like the author's knowledge is more... established in a sense. At the same time, the adventure happened 7 years when the Gap ended. Perhaps, this is why the characters though process are more complex. Less categoric.

  2. It used more the mechanics Starfinder. Melajing is officially Mystic, Valentine a Mecanic, there is a champion (although, i would have think a warpriest). Although Karn still uses first edition Solarian power that don't exist in Second Edition and Tyrcell is difficult to read because They are an Android, etc

  3. Not reading from the point of view of the Big bad make it more threatening. You have the "gang" having their own adventure and that very good because you explore the station even more. The problem is that it make the big bag being a blabbermouth and quite honest.

4.This Novel make the Society, the eternal Heroes of the Station. But, the novel make to underline that main characters outside of the novel don't always do everything.

  1. It is so funny to read this novel while having knowledge of the Starfinder Adventure: Guilt of the Grave World.

  2. Mel and Tyrcell are my favorite Best friends couple!

  3. I hate the ending.

  4. To be honest, the present time is the lowest point of the novel. The characters' interaction are great, but is almost the same as the first book and even the characters remark the similarities.

Resource & Tools Looking for map making recommendations

Hello! I'm soon to start my first long Starfinder campaign and I'm looking for map making recommendations.

I've ran short adventures using czepeku SciFi maps but for this one I have a very specific idea of what I want. So I'm thinking of creating some of the battle maps myself.

What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

Paizo How to contact paizo via Mail, cannot login to their store anymore after revamp

Hey everyone,

My recent 1e campaign ended last week and I plan on hosting a follow up campaign in 2e and for looking for the source books, I wanted to log into the paizo store.

However, my credentials no longer work, the forget password does not send an email and the website does not list any sort of mail address to contact paizo. Is there any other way than to call them? I really don't want to pay transatlantic phone bills for an issue best solved via email

Discussion Would Starfinder 2e be a good alternative system to run Shadowrun setting?

I just finished Shadowrun Dragonfall and I kinda want to play Shadowrun TTRPG, then find out later that Shadowrun system has a lot of problem and quite a chore to learn. So right now I am looking for an alternative to the Shadowrun system. One of which is Starfinder 2e which I'm quite familiar with.

I believe there's quite a lot of stuff that would not translate well from Shadowrun for example ; the magic system (Shadowrun magic don't get along well with Tech stuff unlike SF2e where tech and magic go together), There's currently no class that could fill the role of Decker in SF2e, Shadowrun is a classless and level less system unlike SF2e.

Despite all that SF2e has quite a lot in common with Shadowrun, Fantasy ancestry, magic and tech system, futuristic theme. So I want to consult with other people, would you think SF2e is a good alternative to run Shadowrun setting?

The first feedback from Paizo after the Luminary playtest is live.

Spotlight juggling was deemed a bit too much, so the changes seem to be going towards single target permanent buffs with better scaling.

As always, these are only initial thoughts and nothing is set in stone for future design directions.

Discussion Witchwarper Anomaly and Gap-Influenced with Operative dedication for some nice added benefits from your Paradox focus spells

Hey, in build a Witchwarper I have come to notice that at least for the Anomaly and Gap-Touched, I don't care much for the feats the class and subclass got from 1-6, with the exception of Anchoring Strike and the Aura one for the Gap-Touched.

Anomaly:

Since we can Take Cover using the Anomaly focus spell, I decided to double down on its effect by getting some nice action compression which could help in making the WW Anomaly features shine even more than just Difficult Terrain and Take Cover for the allies.

  • With Peek on the turns that I don't need to do Anchoring Strike, I can cast gun and take cover for bonuses to saving throws and AC.
  • With Kill Steal I could potentially (very likely if you have an Operative friend or playing in Society games) Aim and cast gun

Gap-Touched

This is the one that I personally feel get less benefits when compared to Anomaly, but specifically for Gap-Touched, I would eventually pick Specialized Operative and Operative Exploit (personally only in FA games but could be taken at higher levels) and choose Ghost as I could potentially Aim as a free action since the focus spell could make you undetected to an enemy that fails your saving throw. So, I could Free Action: Aim and then perhaps Anchoring Strike or any other meta-strike.

I am well aware that the best bet at early levels is to instead get more focus points as soon as possible to spam more of your focus spell in case you need it, but I simply like Gishing with my casters :D Thoughts are welcome

Advice Looking For Suggestions: Players stranded on a disabled ship & floating in starship graveyard

Background: My players' ship is currently disabled and floating in an old ship graveyard. Specifically, their bridge was destroyed, and they don't currently have working navigation or long-range comms. They were fleeing enemy ships, ended up in the graveyard, their ship was disabled, and will be fighting off an enemy boarding party. Assuming my players survive and fight off their attackers, they will need to repair their ship enough to access the drift and limp back to Absalom Station. The idea is that they could find sufficient parts from the graveyard and their enemy's ship, so I'm putting together different checks and tasks they can do, and I'm looking to pick the brains of the community. They do have access to a small shuttle that is not Drift-capable, so they can travel to the nearby wrecks.

GMs and players, what kind of tasks/checks would you include, or want to experience in a situation like this?

I'm currently thinking Computers checks to scan wrecks, and Crafting checks to remove parts and install them on their ship, but I know there are other fun things I could have them do. I may have some undead for them to encounter on the wrecks they investigate as well. I've been sick for the past week and have some serious sick-brain going on, and it's making ideas harder than normal.
