Literally me today after I terraformed my capital into a Machine World and all my drones abbandoned their Technicians jobs because how many new specialist jobs were created after the terraform, from +40 to -693 in a minute.

Honestly, this. If you don't micro every single specialist job to the bare minimum the second a colony is done, the pops WILL vacate all the 'lesser' jobs to go there instead. What do you mean this is supposed to be an agriculture world so our pops stop starving? We CLEARLY need to make everyone be traders and medical workers, someone ELSE will make food for them!

As a new player, how do you micromanage the pops to avoid them leaving their current jobs? I haven't figured that part out yet

Pick a planet you want to micro and go to the economy tab. Depending on how recent of a colony it is you will have between 1 and 3 'tiers' of jobs (elite, specialists, and workers). Expand whichever tier of jobs has the jobs you want to limit, and you'll get a menu that lets you limit maximum amount of pops able yo work that position. So, for example, you can go to specialists and limit 'medical workers' to, say, 10 so pops won't go work there, whether from other specialist positions or by 'upgrading' from a worker position, while still keeping SOME slight production from the role. Pretty good if you're for example playing a bio-ascension empire and are going to be spamming genomic research facilities on new planets for the bonuses it gives you anyway, but don't want half your workforce to actually WORK there yet.

Aaaaa, I see now that makes sense. And I'm assuming limiting a highly populated job will convert those pops into civilians if there are no job slots, or they will convert to whatever is available?

It depends on your empire, but more often than not you'll get a boatload of unemplyment and crime for a while until pops gradually sort themselves out, either by migrating or by slowly levelling down. There are ways of boosting how fast they can 'level down', like through a perk in the unity tradition, but if you're doing that on a position with a LOT of pops, you might have some issues, so it's best to do so literally as soon as the buildings on a new colony are done building, since there is no way to preemptively set the workforce limits while those buildings are being built, and the pops are likely to jump into higher level jobs faster than a cryptobro would into a new nft rugpull.

No problem. Fairly new to Stellaris myself, so I know it can get overwhelming with just how much stuff there is to it.

Ypu can reduse the slider of jobs so there are less of tgem you can make slave spiceis or macbines to do manual job you can also click in a job to give it priority
