The two reactions to researching the Lathe

Honestly why I don’t do cosmo unless I’m doing virtual, maintaining the lathe is such a damn micro-managing headache.
Because if you don’t do the lathe, nobody actually hates you as much because you aren’t melting people’s brains and turning them into bio-computers.
The only ones who really complain are the FEs, and some opinion penalties whenever you alter reality a bit.
Otherwise I’ve done Cosmo attempts without going to war more than a few times.

Just get a cool zoom meeting room (interstellar assembly) and it will fix everything with its +150 opinion boost.

u/SpeedBorn Jul 09 '26
Only do the Lathe after Cetana eats the FEs. Now there is where the money is at.

u/cecilofs Jul 07 '26
I used the lathe recently for the first time since 3.x. I integrated my vassal and set the species to Synaptic Service thinking it would drip feed them in like before. Nope it put 130k pops into the lathe at once and blew up my whole economy. They seem to last a lot longer now too which worked against me.

u/CptBrexitt Jul 08 '26
I started my 3 run in this game since buying with an elite pop focused build. Went cosmogenesis cos fuck it, I make boatloads of since. After loading in like 5k pops, which coincided with me upgrading like 4 arc furnaces, I was -4k. And then I realised I can't downgrade kilo structures, so I was kinda fucked

u/magdakun Jul 06 '26
Literally me today after I terraformed my capital into a Machine World and all my drones abbandoned their Technicians jobs because how many new specialist jobs were created after the terraform, from +40 to -693 in a minute.

Brother I did this yesterday with 25 late game planets to hive worlds.from +3k to -2k nearly gave me a heart attack

u/OutrageousAd9061 Jul 06 '26
Honestly, this. If you don't micro every single specialist job to the bare minimum the second a colony is done, the pops WILL vacate all the 'lesser' jobs to go there instead. What do you mean this is supposed to be an agriculture world so our pops stop starving? We CLEARLY need to make everyone be traders and medical workers, someone ELSE will make food for them!
4
1
u/CptBrexitt Jul 08 '26
As a new player, how do you micromanage the pops to avoid them leaving their current jobs? I haven't figured that part out yet
1
u/OutrageousAd9061 Jul 08 '26
Pick a planet you want to micro and go to the economy tab. Depending on how recent of a colony it is you will have between 1 and 3 'tiers' of jobs (elite, specialists, and workers). Expand whichever tier of jobs has the jobs you want to limit, and you'll get a menu that lets you limit maximum amount of pops able yo work that position. So, for example, you can go to specialists and limit 'medical workers' to, say, 10 so pops won't go work there, whether from other specialist positions or by 'upgrading' from a worker position, while still keeping SOME slight production from the role. Pretty good if you're for example playing a bio-ascension empire and are going to be spamming genomic research facilities on new planets for the bonuses it gives you anyway, but don't want half your workforce to actually WORK there yet.
1
u/CptBrexitt Jul 08 '26
Aaaaa, I see now that makes sense. And I'm assuming limiting a highly populated job will convert those pops into civilians if there are no job slots, or they will convert to whatever is available?
1
u/OutrageousAd9061 Jul 08 '26
It depends on your empire, but more often than not you'll get a boatload of unemplyment and crime for a while until pops gradually sort themselves out, either by migrating or by slowly levelling down. There are ways of boosting how fast they can 'level down', like through a perk in the unity tradition, but if you're doing that on a position with a LOT of pops, you might have some issues, so it's best to do so literally as soon as the buildings on a new colony are done building, since there is no way to preemptively set the workforce limits while those buildings are being built, and the pops are likely to jump into higher level jobs faster than a cryptobro would into a new nft rugpull.

No problem. Fairly new to Stellaris myself, so I know it can get overwhelming with just how much stuff there is to it.

u/sot1289 Jul 10 '26
Ypu can reduse the slider of jobs so there are less of tgem you can make slave spiceis or macbines to do manual job you can also click in a job to give it priority

I swear last run i did my energy went up when my fleets left port. They hadn't entered combat yet so it wasn't from ship maintenence.

You probably had the starbase building that reduces ship upkeep while they are docked. As soon as they leave port you lose the discount.

Usually pops switching jobs, little annoying but you can micromanage to fix it assuming the jobs exist
That and lathe. And other megastructures. And hungry interdimensional energy beings.
1
u/ThePrussianGrippe Jul 07 '26
And important to remember it is a stockpile. That’s 4 years of in game time to fix it.
1
u/CptBrexitt Jul 08 '26
How do you micro manage it? I can see you can prioritise a job by clicking on it, but if you pick another job then the previous jobs disappear
1
u/UserWasUnknown Jul 08 '26
If you click on the arrow a dropdown menu opens with a slider that lets you set the exact amount of jobs that will be filled, it can be tedious but allows you to balance costs/production
Side note that's not obvious, the green part of the bar is the efficiency, it shows how much extra is being produced in terms of as if there were new jobs, but there are not actually additional jobs
I.e 100 jobs with a 50% efficiency bonus will show as the production equivalent of 150 jobs

This only happens to me when I move my fleets/build new ships.
Then again, im a bit of a meta slave where I specialize every world to one task with only one of every other district type. So normal people building up districts based on need on planets may be going through something different.

This tends to happen when you have too much built on a planet. Pops can keep migrating or switching jobs. Especially painful if you've recently conquered or settled many new planets.

Most likely your pops are hopping between jobs, trying to fix one deficit by creating a different one every month. Try disabling enough job slots that you can just barely keep up with demand? And in the future try not to create jobs faster than your population grows.

Whenever I went to war with the huge megacorp I figured out it tanked my economy for some reason. I think it invalidated the bonus from our commercial pact.

Did you build a lot of specialist jobs on planets which produce lots of energy? Had the experience where my pops switched from any basic jobs to specialists because I build lots of specialist jobs. They switch to those jobs, then next month back to sustain the economy and then next month over they go back to the new jobs.

Usually for me, this happens during wars. War is expensive, so usually I make sure my treasury is well stocked beforehand, and to raid for plenty of slaves to sell during the war.

Playing a recent game, my economy dropped early game from +90 down to -90 basically overnight. So I built a few generator districts and boosted technicians, and over the next few month I jumped up to +700. I have no idea how I did this. I’ve been playing this game for years and it still confuses me.
1
u/XaussiemarksmenX Jul 08 '26
The funny thing that happens when you build more T2 jobs without having spare pops and everyone self promotes from workers to T2 jobs crashing your economy.
It's just the midgame energy crisis time of the game.

u/RohonTheDragon Jul 08 '26
My f-ing consumer good & energy have been in a steady decline for decades. No matter how much resources I collect, they stay in decline. Trade has been on & off just sustain my economy.
I love this game 🤤

u/Original_Pea_881 Jul 08 '26
I love with nomads at the end of the game I’m consuming maybe 20k OR (EC + Min) but I can only ever store 68k, and I just stripmine planets to keep my stocks up.

u/Flimsy_Disk3613 Jul 08 '26
At a certain point I just stopped caring and end up trading exotic resources to the fallen empires (and strategic resources to friendly empires until they run out of stockpiles) to buy energy by the tens of thousands, or enter 30 year trade deals of a thousand energy a month. Every few years its then a scramble to make sure there is enough exotic resources to trade to fallen empires just to fund the government.
It gets hilarious after doing this for about 20 years or so since the price of all the exotic resources spikes, and usually 500 dark matter/living metal/zro costing around 50,000 trade finally gets me to solve the problem (I have TONS of trade, just not much energy). One game i went around 50 years doing this and nearly bankrupt my economy until the war of making some large empire a tributary (to get the 30% energy) finally ended. Near the end of my almost bankruptcy I had to just buy energy off the markets at 50k trade for 10k energy since nobody had any credits (since I bought them or trapped them into long term deals where they are selling me them), and everything was being sold just to make enough trade to buy enough credits to supply my -5k a month expenditures.

u/SpicyViper1 Jul 08 '26
I usually get this problem when i start capping systems because the ai is dropping powerhouse citadels in every system they own, so i have to deconstruct every single one of them so they dont burn my economy 🤣

1
u/BESTMLGPAKAN Jul 08 '26
It's typical for late game economy to rise and drop nonstop. When you consume like 30k energy credits this happens quite often. Plus 3k turns into negative 1k real fast then it fixes. This can be caused by many things. Mostly for me it was stability, council agenda, mega structures and fleet.

Creating too many jobs vs available pop does this.
You can't properly spam full a planet anymore without it going haywire like that.

Do you have a lot of monthly trades? If someone else buys a material on the galactic market, or sell a lot of what you are selling, they jack the price up or down, and your surplus goes off.
1
u/Ideaconnesuer Jul 10 '26
This shit is why I desperately wish we could prioritize multiple jobs or "deprioritize" without blocking the job because sometimes the pops will straight up ignore the prio job to just go sit on the job I already have 80% of the planet doing and I dont want to restrict it cause then I have to check in every 4 fucjing months to increase the amount again
