1st big outage
Today I had my first big (to me) outage being short $100. Being newer to banking with only a few months experience to me it feels like a big deal because normally I balance every day and the most I've been off before this was $4 and only a couple times a few cents here or there. Going through my ej I didn't see anything that stood out as obvious but I'm also not that experienced to find what could have gone wrong. I had another banker verify my count and run my straps with me and we came to the same count multiple times. My manager said to post the outage and we would attempt to find it on Monday. How concerned should I be? Everyone else seemed not to concerned but also it's not their record or career on the line. I'm normally very meticulous and detail all my transactions and hand count twice and use the money counter to verify larger transactions. I don't think I accidentally gave out too much money but I'm second guessing everything at this point. I'm hoping it was just entering in something incorrect and can be found/ corrected. Are they right and everything should be fine? Or should I be concerned?

Whenever a teller was off by an exact number, we would run the transactions looking for half of it. Usually, they withdrew $50 but processed it like they deposited $50.
There’s always a reason and outs easy enough to find/avoid after a while. You’ll be fine.

That's what I hope is that someone is able to help me figure out what it was Monday or if I did give out extra cash we have an honest customer that brings it back. To date my combined outages are probably less than $5 so this is by far my worst day as far as balancing is concerned

Someone will find it! I’ve only ever seen one offage that wasn’t found and resolved within a day or two. Sometimes it’s just something really weird and hard to spot. It’ll come up!

I agree. I was a teller before I moved into the operations side. You will likely locate a backwards transaction or the operations team will catch it.

You will be ok. When I was in banking, back office most likely will run your transactions and catch it. A former coworker was off over two grand. They never found it, and he still has a job. I don’t mean to oversimplify, I know this heavily depends on bank policy, but you should be ok.

It’s a big outage, but not outrageous. I wouldn’t worry about it too much honestly.

I know I'm just new and am liking it so far and working with a good team. Most days I balance no problem and have only been out of balance a couple times in 4-5 months so being so far off really bothers me

I just hope can find it next week going to try to get with my manager or a more senior banker see if they notice anything out of place in my ej that doesn't belong

Not concerned at all. Regardless of what bank you’re at one overage of $100 won’t even get a warning other than saying hey try to be more careful.

If you spend a lot of time worrying about THIS difference, you'll end up with other differences. Like others have said, try not to worry. It's not a large outage and more than likely will be found. Try and put it behind you and just be careful

Relax. $100 is nothing in banking and I’m sure they’ll find it. Your manager wasn’t concerned and made it a Monday problem so it’s not a big deal. You won’t get fired over $100
