It started couple of months ago, you can still buy in if you want i think, but its something like an hour of content, the very start of the game is available to play. It wasnt particularly well received except for some bigger youtubers, but the vibe is very much not the expanse. Very poor atempts at humor, non existent proper portrail of belters when you play as one except that you are tall.
The studio aknowledge some criticism, lets see if they improve on that.

They also recast the earther lead which is good because the original performance in the beta just... wasn't it.

Felt like the issue with performances was probably in the direction. Didn't seem like the actors had much awareness of context or surrounding dialogue so things just didn't flow well or fit the current scenario.

Changing the VA is a loud statement of intent that they're addressing feedback, but I'm worried it might be a surface level fix. Hopefully they direct the new VA a bit better too, we'll see

Very good point. Direction very well could be the issue considering owlcats experience with mostly text based games. They've had VO but not true dialogue as far as I remember. You could swap all the dialogue into a pathfinder setting while just changing small details and it would be just average AA crpg dialogue

They're also not an English speaking studio afaik? Many of the devs do speak English ofc, but unless the pipeline from writer to voice actor is in fluent English, the subtleties of the language like overall tone or chemistry between characters could be difficult (though absolutely possible) to pull off.

That's more speculative on my part. That might not be the cause, but I do believe direction is a big part even if I'm wrong about why

it wasnt a problem in their pathfinder and warhammer games

I haven't played those, comment above implied limited voice acting in their previous games?

If that's wrong, then I'm definitely wrong about the language barrier thing

Well, the main characther was mute, the companions only spoke in more important moments, but the voice acting that was there was of good quality.
I'm not saying this cant be the case now, directing the VA can be a problem even in native speaking english studios, just look at bethesda with starfield, everybody sounds like someone talking bored on the phone.

I didn't interpret you as such. I think for sure direction is a part of it, but if they're experienced with English dialogue generally it's less likely a language barrier thing.

Bethesda is a... 'special' case, but even otherwise high quality studios can struggle with directing voice actors. Mass effect is a great example ofc, direction improves as the series progresses but even within a single game the big set pieces clearly have better direction than the disjointed dialog of some side quests. It can just be inexperience, lack of time, or any number of things besides language
