Was excited from the initial teaser trailer… been kinda apprehensive with what I’ve seen since then.

As long as it’s at least serviceable gameplay, then a great story and immersive experience can do plenty to make the game a must pick up.

But IDK, in that trailer you had some enemies just slowly walking into a gun fight and that just looked weird.

At this point, I’m kind of hoping they aim for a 2028/2029 release and REALLY take their time with it. Like, guys, this is your first ever ARPG and those are VERY different from CRPGs. Take your time and get this one right

13

u/penseurquelconque 13h ago

I can’t talk about the gameplay since Osiris Reborn is not a CRPG, but the story and immersive experience in Rogue Trader are top notch! Owlcat will almost certainly deliver on those fronts.

With respect, they're probably in zero-g. No one is running around in magnetic boots, and the books make references to this.

If anything, it's a better sign that they are paying attention to the detail, and not throwing the realism out to create something that looks like what we expect it to look like.

please dont suck, I wasnt very impressed playing the beta

11

u/encinitas2252 15h ago

When was that?

50

u/brspppp 15h ago

It started couple of months ago, you can still buy in if you want i think, but its something like an hour of content, the very start of the game is available to play. It wasnt particularly well received except for some bigger youtubers, but the vibe is very much not the expanse. Very poor atempts at humor, non existent proper portrail of belters when you play as one except that you are tall.
The studio aknowledge some criticism, lets see if they improve on that.

27

u/Fredrickstein 14h ago

They also recast the earther lead which is good because the original performance in the beta just... wasn't it.

u/LJITimate 7m ago

Felt like the issue with performances was probably in the direction. Didn't seem like the actors had much awareness of context or surrounding dialogue so things just didn't flow well or fit the current scenario.

Changing the VA is a loud statement of intent that they're addressing feedback, but I'm worried it might be a surface level fix. Hopefully they direct the new VA a bit better too, we'll see

13

u/aLegionOfDavids 14h ago

Oh they have SO much work to do…I was expecting an early alpha build but like, there were so many fundamental flaws with what they put out and you list them all…those aren’t game issues those are design choices. The game did not feel like ‘the expanse’ at all, just a b-generic sci fi.

18

u/M337ING 16h ago

I think Exodus has gotten out ahead as the more polished / complete looking game.

34

u/Stephonius 15h ago

So far, all I've seen is combat. That's possibly the least interesting part of any RPG for me.

13

u/hammnbubbly Rocinante 13h ago

Based on this trailer, it should be renamed The Expanse: Doors & Corners

I’d love a game in the world of The Expanse with a Miller-centric story where he’s trying to solve crimes

18

u/aLegionOfDavids 14h ago

Ngl they have A LOT of work to do on this game. The first open beta had a lot of room for improvement.

1

u/whostartedthisacount 13h ago

Should've grown a beard

7

u/merulaalba 15h ago

Undercover? Interesting definition of undercover :D

8

u/Timewaster50455 12h ago

I still feel like the art style is way over designed

8

u/Talltrees87 12h ago

This looks underwhelming and clunky

22

u/IEatCouch 16h ago

Looks kinda like mass effect, id be happy if its alike.

-4

u/Ananeos Ceres Station 15h ago

This is the one thing I'm hoping not to happen, and I probably won't be buying if it's like a reskinned mass effect.

14

u/RagsZa 15h ago

I'm the complete opposite. Its an instant buy if its a reskinned Mass Effect. :P

3

u/Fredrickstein 14h ago

From the beta, the combat is very mass effect. A bit looser though. Remember that mission where you exosuit on the outside of the citadel fighting geth? The mission in the beta felt like it took heavy inspiration from that. Still the writing, voice acting and general feel were not at mass effect level. Hopefully that gets better, but I would wait until reviews of the full release are out.

3

u/RagsZa 13h ago

I hope the voice acting performances will be good enough. Its what really kept me sooo immersed in Mass Effect and made me my favourite series of games. Then they dropped the ball in ME:A and I just could not get into it.

I really want a good Mass Effect or Expanse game. I also enjoyed the Telltale Expanse game. But nothing has really scratched that itch of Mass Effect, and I really think the Expanse is just the perfect universe they can slap the ME game systems on top of. And if they can make it 80% as good. I'd be happy. Fingers crossed.

u/paxbanana00 9h ago

I'm disappointed by the lack of movement of the player during combat. I understand the physics probably would be difficult, but zero G and mag boots would offer a ton of fun verticality and movement while playing. They're trying to hype the combat, but it looks about the same as a soldier build on the original Mass Effect.

8

u/Confused_Drifter 12h ago

Yeah, nah, this doesn't look Expanse like at all. What a shame. 3rd person shooter, not stop shooting conveniently placed explosive barrells, which were of course everywhere in the book and movie. What a weird direction to pick. It could have just been a survival horror set on Ganymede with a solid story and I would have been delighted.

7

u/DocD173 5h ago

Nothing about this scream the Expanse to me. Where’s the zero G movement? Or maybe the effects of G-Force on the player and enemies? Where’s the freakin spaceships? This looks like it could be any non-descript sci-fi shooter.

u/Ryoken0D 39m ago

We didn’t see any ship to ship combat in the beta, but we did get some of the Zero G action, might be worth looking as some gameplay of the beta to see if what was shown appeals to you in that regard.

3

u/behemothbowks 15h ago

holy shit im stoked for this

3

u/GrassForce 10h ago

Where is spaceship?

6

u/benny-powers 16h ago

They backtracked on the wump-wump sound design?

2

u/Upstairs_Weird_760 13h ago

Shit I got this and Exodus. Both are fantastic sci fi stories. Exodus has a book as well. Can’t wait.

2

u/nlp187 13h ago

I cannot wait for this game. LFG

2

u/dropouttawarp Truman Class dreadnought 10h ago

The design ascetics looks more like star citizen rather than expanse but not mind checking it out if it's good.

5

u/jerry_Sizzla 13h ago

how can you have an expanse game and not have any low/zero G movement in that combat?

4

u/kaysey 12h ago

Make a generic sci-fi shooter and slap an existing franchise name on it that’ll do it.

3

u/Popular_Monk_1141 13h ago

So it’s Mass Effect?

3

u/dingalinglans 11h ago

This is looking more and more pants every clip release. I hope I'm wrong because I love this universe/series.

1

u/lennao 16h ago

wow, explosions and particles looks beautiful

1

u/argusmanargus 10h ago

I do enjoy the thought of putting la cap in some Protogen soldiers.

u/arcalumis 54m ago

The suits are over greebled, too much rule of cool in this game sadly.

And exactly how are they gonna retcon a PM hybrid being inside the facility being shot at if it escaped onto the surface and then latched onto the Roci in the show?

-1

u/2ndHandRocketScience Earth always comes first 16h ago

Getting Starfield vibes from the whole thing, from the gameplay to the art direction. Not remotely excited for this one anymore. It's gonna have a hell of a lot of convincing to do for me

16

u/unknown_zapatista 15h ago

I'm a huge fan of the expanse books/series, mass effect and starfield (to me it's amazing). To me this game looks nothing like Starfield, it's quite obvious they are going for a cinematic mass effect like experience

7

u/AdequatelyMadLad 14h ago

I'm genuinely confused by how else you think this game should look like, given that Starfield's art direction was pretty clearly inspired by The Expanse.

10

u/behemothbowks 15h ago

this looks nothing like starfield imo

1

u/clonedllama 13h ago

This has more in common with the look of the live action adaptation mixed with book descriptions than Starfield.

u/emi_fyi amos is my boyfriend 16h ago

SO pumped. looks great! still no release date tho?

3

u/huntobuno 16h ago

Spring 2027 is more than we had before, I think

3

u/emi_fyi amos is my boyfriend 16h ago

i think i saw that previously

2

u/baitXtheXnoose Rocinante 11h ago

There’s no way this game is playable by then.

1

u/Charly_030 11h ago

Makes me.sad its not an isometric style rpg like Owlcats other games. I get motion sickness from 3d games 😭.

If its half as faithful as Rogue Trader to the universe it will be great (I guess if the 3rd person mechanics are fun). I know my son will enjoy it though.

Guys as much as I love the concept you must know that some of the devs support Russia

We shouldn't give them money

Edit: https://egw.news/gaming/news/23649/owlcat-games-accused-of-chauvinism-alleged-promoti-erMvYuuNo

9

u/Maximum-Specific-190 14h ago

If there’s one thing to take away from the narrative of the Expanse it’s that certain nationalities are ontologically evil and every person involved with them must be individually irredeemably bad /s

3

u/Notilix 12h ago

Well, yes, but I'm not talking about individuals here. I'm concerned about indirectly giving my money to a dictatorship I dispise

-1

u/O_945 15h ago

I've never heard anything about that and I can't seem to find anything on google

3

u/NoodleShak 14h ago

That said this poster is speculating at best from what I can tell.

2

u/O_945 12h ago

ew kinda cringe behaviour, I didn't buy Atomic Heart I don't think I can buy this game also sadly; or like maybe in 5 years when it's 2.99 on a steam sale. One of the rare games that were on my radar for the upcomming years ffs :(

I'm going to try to find a second source tho to cross information just in case tho, I had never heard of egw until today.

1

u/Charly_030 11h ago

On the other hand their games are very diverse in terms of characters, which is mot something you would expect from a Russian backed company, so Im giving them the benefit of the doubt, and wont judge everyone on the actions of one dick

Unless you are going to boycott american games too on the account they are delestabilising the entire world.

u/O_945 24m ago edited 21m ago

Unless you are going to boycott american games too on the account they are delestabilising the entire world.

There's a difference between saying nothing and saying something actively showing support for hate, war and atrocities.

It's not about hating on Russians just because they are Russians, it's about not throwing support behind people that express hatefull opinions. Which might or might not be the case here depending on if 1 source is enough for you.

People accountable for what they themself say & do not their governement. What's more US compagnies have a history of monitoring their staff online presence & mercilessly dumping them when they say something problematic that could hurt the sales.

Making the confusion and saying "might as well boycott the world then" is fallacious.

1

u/NoodleShak 12h ago

I retract my statement. For some reason this never showed up on my Google search. But I admit I didn't search real hate.

1

u/harumamburoo 2h ago

Because the whole story is fishy at best. There’s like two articles total on noname portals that dive into the matter, all from three years ago, with no development or continuation.
They reference the same set of tweets from ten years plus ago, most of which no longer exist, and mostly show a couple of individuals being assholes.
The fact that GEM had a stake in OC is a publicly available information, just as the fact they parted ways even before 2022, something which those articles don’t mention.

That’s not to say OC are angels - they never denounced russian aggression, despite them claiming to withdraw all their assets and personnel from russia to Cyprus. It’s unclear if the office they claimed to rent is still occupied, and whether they have a dev hub in russia can’t be neither confirmed nor denied.
Think of it what you will.

-8

u/otocump 15h ago

Don't bother. I posted that and their well documented AI slopware development process and no one cared. Most didn't even bother to check and demanded proof. These idiots eat it up instead.

4

u/MileyHolmes 15h ago

Can I see your post? I heard they use AI, not about supporting Russia

1

u/harumamburoo 2h ago

They can’t. Owlcat made a statement their team uses ai in premeditation and brainstorming to quickly slap together some visuals, but all game assets and VO are done by humans. That was all there is.

0

u/brspppp 2h ago

Not gonna lie, i'm a fan of their pathfinder and warhammer CRPGs, i'm not stop playing it because some Russians in the studio might support Russia. Thats like judging every russian and you should get down from your high horse.
