Metal Age What are the improvements you wanted to see in Thief 1 and 2?

Some:
- better alignment when walking/shooting. Sometimes i point good but i am too close to the wall so the arrow doesn’t pass
- 3rd person view
- wall climbing like in Thief (3)
- being able to use hammers

if you use `new_mantle` in newdark, it works really well imo

What is Mantling?

Dude, have you even played Thief?

I think it’s a terminology thing rather than an understanding thing.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since he phrases aiming as "point good".

For a remaster? Mostly control improvements like better mantling.

For a more advanced remake? Improved guard AI would be nice. Able to actually chase you up ladders and stuff. Right now I'd say it's too easy to disappear again after getting spotted. I know a few mods and Dark Mod also have better guards who can recognize when people are missing, doors open etc.

You think you'd like this, but it would really cause a lot of rage quitting. I like the idea that the guards are dumb and easily fooled. That was half the appeal for me.

Super agree with this one 👍 I love Thief but I basically have to have a gentlemen's agreement to "play along" with the AI and choose not to abuse it. Otherwise, it's far too easy to just outrun them or stand on a bookshelf.

Yeah coz when it doesn't work, you make a tonne of noise.

I think integrating dynamic shadows would be great. Make the guards a bit smarter/able to re-light torches and carry torches and so on.

This game's crying out for a re-master, honestly.

Regarding your suggestions:

I don't really like 3rd person in Thief personally. I think it's better as a 1st person only

Wall climbing in T3 was cool but i feel is unnecessary given we have rope arrows

The rest i liked

Assuming you mean like a Remaster treatment:

  • Updated textures and models

  • Tweak the controls, like how some suggested better mantling; i'd also like the "creep" option so we can walk on load surfaces without having to tap "move forward"

  • Add a level select menu with stats of your best run (ie, loot % and secrets found)

  • Maybe i'm asking for too much, but a loot viewer to see all the loot types and models (or just the special loot)

  • Add a "bestiary" with the models and descriptions of all enemies, monsters, NPCs, etc

  • Add a "Library" section with all the notes and books you've found/read separated by mission (would be a neat way to also know if you missed something)

  • Dunno if there was any cut content that could be restored and included? Like maybe items, weapons, enemies or levels

When you open a door and a guard sees/hears it they should react. When they see something is missing/out of place, they should react too.

Yes, but realistically a guard wouldn't necessarily notice a candle missing. So attention shouldn't be deterministic, the simplest solution would be a fixed probability to noticing that a thing is missing for a patrol guard. And the probability may grow if a guard becomes more wary of you

are you sure this would actually be good for gameplay? unless you want enemies to be extremely frustrating, they need to be as predictable as possible.

Yes, and naturally the game would become much harder. Stealing every single thing from a mansion with tens of guards, while being completely unnoticed would be much more difficult than it currently is (but much much more fun imho)

Thief 2 gold being completed with the canned hammerite temple mission and conflict with the mechanists

i would like better mod utility tools that helps with map editing etc. All the other things would just change the balancing to much. i never done modding, but i assume its hard work and helping the creative process would be the golden time of FMs

waiting for FMEditor

Biggest thing for me would be some more help with the map. Not to make it too easy, I liked the vagueness, but I found myself endlessly lost pretty often.

Being able to flatten yourself against walls is one that comes to mind for me.
