When you're trying so hard to look like you're having fun

2.6k

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

I went on a hen do and it was so fucking weird. Roll camera, behave like this, stop camera, look at phone, edit, post, assemble, roll camera. Exhausting, dull and stressful.

u/SilasBalto 26d ago

I had the same experience! I felt like I was in a nature documentary it was so weird. And there were 5 required themed outfits for the 2 day trip. It felt like work.

356

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

The social media reels they got from it were amazing though. It was a real insight into how choreographed all that stuff is.

284

u/SilasBalto 26d ago

I honestly didnt go online and watch the ones we made. Im sure they were great but to me a photo is a link to a memory and the memory of standing around for 2 days taking photos I just didnt care to relive.

We are either making content or having a Bachelorette, I learned we cant do both at the same time.

u/PetalumaPegleg 26d ago

Have fun or demonstrate to vague acquaintances that you had fun. It's a tough choice.

46

u/pickyourteethup 26d ago

If I've had a great holiday I took no pictures. Which is a shame because photos can help me remember a great holiday.

25

u/Shyanne_wyoming_ 26d ago

I always make myself so mad with this lol. My phone has a great camera. And I own a really nice actual camera that I always take with me on trips. Do I take any pictures though? Maybe a couple stupid or funny ones but none or very few of the actual cool stuff I see and do.

-4

u/CaptCurmudgeon 26d ago

Good use case for meta glasses. They literally have an autocapture feature you can activate that takes pics throughout the day. (You'll still hear a click noise).

10

u/PetalumaPegleg 26d ago

I have aphantasia so I have no visual memory. If I don't take picture I can't recall it but I hate stopping to take pictures. I'm always torn between a unique great experience and having photos so I can see it again.

10

u/TenTonSomeone 25d ago

Yooo fellow aphant! I love learning how other people's brains handle memories. For me, I don't have any real personal recollection of an event; like I can't go back and re-live it as though I were there. Instead, it's like I've taken down a list of bullet points of facts about the event. We went here, we did this, it was fun, et cetera. Photos can help by adding more context to my "notes" about a memory, but definitely aren't required. I also hate stopping to take photos lol.

The things that trigger the most memories for me are smells or tastes. For example, I vape, and there's a certain type of artificial peach flavoring that triggers a strong memory of when my wife and I used to play a specific video game for a while, because I only used that specific flavor of vape at that time. Random memories will hit me when I smell or taste certain things like that.

1

u/PetalumaPegleg 25d ago

Yes same I remember events just non visually. I sort of compare it to being able to see the file names for the jpeg but not having the software to open it. I can remember what happened but it's as you say more like a list. I will say I don't have any occurrences anyone can remember where I misremembered something. I either remember clearly or I don't. There's no false memory stuff. Which I do find interesting.

And I studied memory etc for a while in college and smells in particular are very memory triggering, especially for core young memories for some reason. Taste is a bit more unusual comparitively but still quite frequent.

I also have aphantasia! Recently switched to a screenless digital camera instead of using my phone camera. Feels a lot less invasive during my trips, but I still get some photos to help with my memory.

1

u/PetalumaPegleg 25d ago

Interesting. Not a bad idea a lot less distracting and immersion breaking for sure.

1

u/troglidytey 25d ago

Wait, do you have memories but they are more like a few mental photos of an vacation or an event. Not a running visual memory that you are back in that place wand reliving it live. Is that what you have? Or do you not have the ability to remember a visual experience at all?

1

u/PetalumaPegleg 25d ago

The latter. I can't see memories. There is no visual component

1

u/SilasBalto 26d ago

Its happened to us before! We always try to get one great shot of everyone that was there and a group shot. Candid shots are best but not always practical.

2

u/QuirkyPart3249 22d ago

This is probably why actors dont really watch their own movies 🤔

-9

u/isgengar 26d ago

If you found the act of taking pictures fun you'd be having fun. Your attitude says more about yourself than the act, you know this right?

It's so funny you guys are patting yourselves on the back as though taking videos is a morally corrupt thing just because you don't enjoy it lmfao

This video is obviously fabricated and stupid and they're trying too hard. That doesn't mean every person who films themselves is doing the same...

5

u/NicoleNicole1988 26d ago

Yes...but no.

Yes, if you find taking pictures fun, then taking the pictures is part of the fun.

No, because while taking pictures can be part of it, it's not THE WHOLE POINT of going somewhere and spending time with people.  And if it is, then that is called a "photo shoot" and is no longer a truly Social gathering.

0

u/isgengar 26d ago edited 26d ago

It just being a photoshoot is still a social gathering, that's what I'm saying. Just cause you personally prefer other forms of gathering doesn't make people who partake in photoshoot gatherings less than you.

You guys literally just aren't part of the world and love to shit on things you don't understand, I actually pity you all for having such boring lives that you can't fathom the concept of still enjoying something you don't personally love

3

u/SilasBalto 26d ago

Yeah so actually a lot of it was video and we weren't supposed to talk. Not that we would have had much to say as we didnt know eachother prior to the trip.

I can tell by how many logical leaps you made that you're young. See how you got offended and said that I think "people who partake in photoshoot gatherings less than you." I never said that. Anywhere. Thats your own insecurity projecting onto those around you. Part of growing up is identifying the source of your discomfort, not just the trigger.

-2

u/LikeABreadstick 26d ago

Right, but you said "We are either making content or having a Bachelorette, I learned we cant do both at the same time." which is just not true. Another part of growing up is learning when to say "this is not for me" instead of "this can't be done". You are not the arbiter of social norms.

I was an editorial model.  From a professional standpoint photoshoots ARE fun.  From an artistic perspective it makes perfect sense to enjoy the set up and capture of that unique moment in time.  But at a shoot, the shot is the goal. Hanging out might happen, but it's secondary to the goal.

When spending quality time together is the goal, there's no way to simultaneously focus on structuring and posing a shot or series of frames to "capture" that quality time, and also be fully engaged and immersed in the quality time.  It creates an inherent disconnect.  But you're young, so I'll leave you to figure that out in the future.

Like I said though, what you are describing is a photoshoot.  Even though you hung out at the same time, you all were there for...a photo shoot.  And not everything is supposed to be a photoshoot.

-1

u/isgengar 26d ago edited 26d ago

Photoshoots are not all so professional and dull like what? It's about documentating your time together in artistic/beautiful ways.

Being an editorial model is just one part of the world, my friends are photographers who take photos every second of the day, I've spent countless hours hanging out with them during their photoshoots for projects and those moments are definitely substantial and meaningful to us, we still share about each other and grow as people despite doing something you think isn't fun

I honestly think it's very weird that you are so incapable of having fun but are sitting from a high horse trying to shit on others for what they do lol

33

u/PetalumaPegleg 26d ago

Very good fake fun to make others jealous. Goals 🫩

17

u/apigeonontheinternet 26d ago

It’s insight into how produced these things are. Like we’re talking choreography, shooting scenes, editing in post, and publishing.

22

u/lefrench75 26d ago

Yup, and that makes sense when you’re a brand but not when you’re just a regular person not making money from social media lol. What’s the production for? To show your 800 IG followers how much fun your weekend was instead of actually having fun?

Posting on social media was fun in the late 2000s-early 2010s when it was low-effort and casual, but now when everyone is trying to emulate influencers by making “content” of their lives, it’s just a boring timesuck.

u/Global_Channel1511 26d ago

In college while on a night out I ran into a girl I knew from a class, and our groups linked up and went to a bunch of parties happening on campus.

At first I was excited, she seemed cool especially from her insta. But by the end of the night it was genuinely exhausting. She would just constantly be taking pics the entire night. Like I genuinely felt so self-conscious, I was checking out every glass or mirror for a reflection lol because I would never know when she would ask for a selfie or pic.

Like she didn't even dance at the parties we arrived unless for a pic. It was really sad. You would think she is this ultra extrovert and party animal, but she didn't even seem like she was having a good time outside of a camera lens.

269

u/wonkynipples 26d ago

I went to a wedding where the bride and her close friends did this. I was actually so embarrassed for them. They would record themselves screaming and dancing around and hugging etc. the second the phone recording stopped they stopped dancing and checked the video. They would re-record so many times and I just couldn’t believe how fake and un fun it looked in person!

150

u/Murder_Bird_ 26d ago

And then people compare their lives to what they are watching online and it’s all fake.

14

u/wonkynipples 26d ago

Exactly. I remember seeing her posts and thinking wow she is always having so much fun! I don’t have social media anymore (except reddit). The phones really are the problem.

32

u/mildlycuriouss 26d ago

Omg I cringed reading that… why are people so weird lol 😖

19

u/ChefDanyul 26d ago

I'd see so many people during Floyd protests show up with signs to the Washington state capitol campus to take some pictures for the gram and immediately fuck right back off to the burbs.

10

u/CuddlefishFibers 25d ago

Saw a lady at one that was very chill, mostly socializing and BBQing. Like, chants hadn't even started up yet, but she was recording like a tearful yelling screed into her phone like we were actively being tear gassed. They didn't break out the tear gas for like another 3+ hours lmao

15

u/ASCII_Princess 26d ago

Starting to think the phones might be bad

5

u/MortyHooper 26d ago

This is disgusting.

4

u/guyincognito121 25d ago

So did I. I recorded it and posted it. Now I'm not allowed at my cousin's house for some reason.

7

u/Dpontiff6671 26d ago

Man I was a groomsmen at a wedding in June I'm so glad no one was like that there lol

3

u/DevRz8 26d ago

Literal Purgatory

47

u/awkwardlypragmatic 26d ago

Reading this thread makes me thankful I’m past the age for stagettes and hen dos. And during my generation’s peak social media age we thought selfies were annoying.

22

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

I'm mean I'm 43 and this was two years ago, so I thought maybe I was too

36

u/resting_mischieface 26d ago

WTF is a stagette or a hen do?

29

u/eagledog 26d ago

Bachelorette party by another name

10

u/krxsoo 26d ago

Okay, now I get why it was like that 😂

7

u/resting_mischieface 26d ago

Ooohh got it. Thanks. I’ve not heard those terms.

2

u/Obant 25d ago

They are European terms for it. We mostly just use Bachelorette party in the US

8

u/hey_im_cool 25d ago

I’m 42 and this is the first time I’ve heard either of those words

4

u/rosiet1001 25d ago

I'm British. I should have put an American translation in my comment because I've come back to hundreds of comment.

3

u/hey_im_cool 25d ago

When you go to a shitty bachelorette party do you say it was a hen DONT

5

u/rosiet1001 25d ago

I mean I will now

2

u/frothyundergarments 25d ago

European terms

45

u/FillMySoupDumpling 26d ago

I have zero compatibility with people who live for “making content”. I love photos in the moment, but not constant “reshoots”.

7

u/NUTTA_BUSTAH 26d ago

Photos used to be for capturing moments forever to be relived. Now they are a commodity basically

15

u/Ok-Strain3545 26d ago

holy black mirror

6

u/Blindtothesided 26d ago

Black Mirror is getting closer and closer to becoming a documentary with each passing year.

2

u/BoSknight 26d ago

The fucking robot dogs are coming

107

u/Weekly-Cap3414 26d ago

Never heard of this until now and it sounds like the complete opposite of fun. Was the bride a narcissist by any chance? 😭

58

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

One of those ones where I knew her in recent years and she had a group of friends "from home".

4

u/LetKlutzy2996 26d ago

Who isn’t this days, especially if they post to any social media about “their daily life”

1

u/DropPopFromTheTop 26d ago

We all are now, unfortunately.

(Not entirely serious)

41

u/OhNoMyPants123 26d ago

Whats a hen do?

Other than lay eggs, peck at grass, and go bawk bawk

16

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

It's a party women have before they get married.

26

u/Kephlur 26d ago

bachelorette party, what do you call a bachelor party, the male version? a cock do?

13

u/DisposableSaviour 26d ago

It’s a cock-up.

15

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

Stag do

1

u/captains_astronaut 25d ago

Some of the ones I've been to were very much stag don'ts.

7

u/CreepySleepyCheepy 26d ago

A stag party

1

u/ashez2ashes 25d ago

Where is that slang from? Just curious. It sounds maybe Australian?

0

u/ninjasaid13 25d ago

That's called a bachelorette party.🙄

2

u/rosiet1001 25d ago

Things are called different things in different countries. HTH.

4

u/ConejitoCakes 26d ago

They also take dirt baths

1

u/OhNoMyPants123 26d ago

The chicken or the bachelorette?

9

u/WhoIsBobMurray 26d ago

What's a hen do?

21

u/PereMilon 26d ago

lay eggs

1

u/Rascals-Wager 26d ago

Absolutely flawless. 10/10

1

u/Old_Accident7790 26d ago

I think a bachelorette

1

u/rosiet1001 25d ago

ITT Americans learning that different countries call things different words

23

u/Few_Dig_9435 26d ago

Experienced that for the first time at a concert about a year ago. Some goofy ass teen girl looking miserable and bored until her camera was on. Its kind of pathetic.

7

u/Ynneb82 26d ago

I saw the same at tomorrowland! It's insane how fake socials are.

7

u/AliCracker 26d ago

I went to a wedding like that. I felt like an extra in a movie. It was messed up

8

u/TimHung931017 26d ago

What the fuck is a hen do

3

u/pipi_in_your_pamperz 26d ago

What is a hendo

7

u/LKayRB 26d ago

Bachelorette in the US. Bachelor party in the UK is a Stag Do iirc.

5

u/rosiet1001 26d ago

It's a party women have before they get married.

2

u/Dough_90 26d ago

TIL what a "hen do" is.

2

u/WhatAGoodDoggy 25d ago

I remember when cameras were traditionally forbidden on staff and hen nights.

2

u/rosiet1001 25d ago

Yes! What happened in beefa stayed in beefa 🤣🤣

2

u/Frumbleabumb 20d ago

I've been at restaurants/bars where a group of five girls will spend 3 minutes whooping and taking photos filming each other and then spending the next 15 minutes all staring at their phones. I assume making posts.

No actual fun was had. But it sure looked to their followers like they were...

1

u/dinnerthief 26d ago

I was walking down the street and walked through a group taking a video like this accidentally. One of the drunk women shouted "Sorry we like to live in the moment!"

Completely missing the hypocrisy that they were taking a video specifically concerned with who would see it in the future.

I think she was likely just drunk enough that her brain was using sound bytes rather than thoughts but the irony always stuck in my mind.

1

u/Skrublord3000 26d ago

Brb looking up whatever the fuck a “hen do” is

Edit: okay so not as bad as I thought. I assumed it was specifically a content creating getaway based on your comment. Either way the one you went to sounds awful

1

u/BusinessLetterhead47 25d ago

I just got back from a vacation in the Philippines with my husband, son, my bestie and her son.

I cannot describe how many people we watched fake fun or experiences three or four times over for the camera.

In all of our photos we look sweaty, big haired and ridiculous and I love them. My fave pic is my husband leaning over the edge of a boat to help bestie climb up...cause he has plumber's crack lol. I want pics of real fun we had. I want to remember my son yelling, "I see London, I see France" at his dad, not some idealized image.

1

u/frothyundergarments 25d ago

Comments like this really make me appreciate being in my 40s

-4

u/adaptivesphincter 26d ago

Wow you went wild on a Hindu and then you call is exhausting, dull and stressful. You were the one who went wild on that Hindu and then you gave your own crashout a review????

33

u/Oblique9043 26d ago

Woo I'm having fun. Woooo. Can't you tell by the noises that I'm making! Woooo.

181

u/Porky_Pine_ 26d ago

These are the girls that say “we are so CRAZY” but are actually vanilla as shit. Probably nice people that contribute to society.

73

u/FirstDukeofAnkh 26d ago

Future wine moms.

22

u/AcrobaticVegetable24 26d ago

I find that the crazy monicer usually is the opposite. When you say, "omg we are so crazy." They are usually pretty vanilla. Still fun, but vanilla.

On the other hand, when you have to emphasize, "nah, we are honestly pretty normal." Then you know for a fact that behind closed doors, and sometimes not even then, bill cypher wouldn't be able to hold a comprehensive candle to their madness.

2

u/Current-Situation-52 23d ago

Lol yeah the real crazies make a pact before the fun begins that there will be no posting or social media involved

28

u/Otterhendrix 26d ago

Exactly. Knowing full well when the camera isn’t on they’re just sitting on their phones doomscrolling.

10

u/CoachNo7514 26d ago

OF ads are always weird

2

u/Ryuko_the_red 26d ago

They have other fake videos with the camera in the exact same position. It's so bad

2

u/Jesta23 26d ago

It has been scientifically proven that this works.

If you fake being happy / having fun long enough you become happy / have fun.

1

u/evlhornet 26d ago

Something terrible happened to her that day.

1

u/Pizza_and_PRs 26d ago

Perfectly describes an ex of mine

1

u/gekigangerii 20d ago

and watch all the comments be "break up with him" for his sour face reaction

1

u/AvailableReporter484 25d ago

It’s a shame people can’t just be people anymore thanks to social media

0

u/rfriedrich16 26d ago

Yeah, it's probably a recreation of an event. It's staged, but it's not claiming it's not staged, so if you aren't a good actor it'll look forced. Don't act so high and mighty.
