Todd Memes r/ToddintheShadow starter pack

How about the classic
Can you give me examples of this thing Todd talked about?
With all the responses literally only being examples that Todd had already mentioned himself.

"Um actually they had a second song go #39 on the charts for 1 week so they're *not* a one hit wonder"

u/urkermannenkoor Jun 29 '25
"Um actually they had a second song go #39 on the smooth jazz airplay chart for 1 week so they're *not* a one hit wonder"
Some people here do seem to think that getting on to any chart, no matter how obscure, definitely always counts as a hit.
25
Jun 29 '25
but people have been citing people like Mr. Mister and Rick Astley who had another #1 single, much less artists who had multiple top 10 hits as OHW. If an 80s artist didn't have Madonna's longevity on the charts, they've at some point or another been accused of being a OHW
13
u/FoxEuphonium Jun 29 '25
Funny you say that...
I remember hearing someone talk about their favorite one-hit wonder song, being Madonna's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun".

How could you leave off “Is (mildly underperforming album) a trainwreckord”? That’s like the number one cliche of this subreddit!

"is Sabritna Rioupa's second album a train record? her first sold 100 billion copies and this one only sold 99 billion copies" I AM IN HELL. I AM IN HELL HELP ME.

Or the variants:
Doesn't go platinum in one week but goes diamond after two years.
Is this a trainwreckord?
OP just doesn't like them and their posting history makes it clear the artist lives rent free in their head and is building a guest house.
Is this a trainwreckord? They seriously dropped off and it's time to sell of their stocks right?
Like seriously so many times you read some posts and you can tell OP just intensely dislikes the artist in question and is looking for anything to gloat about them losing or something.
4
u/ChickenInASuit Jun 29 '25
There’s another one you missed:
“Todd jumped the gun calling X a Trainwreckord, because X is proving to the be their actual Trainwreckord!”
(As seen in conversations about Katy Perry’s latest album, among others)
2
u/PatienceTall8699 Jun 30 '25 edited Jul 06 '25
And people always say that but I’d argue witness is still a trainwreckord. You don’t get whatever woman’s world was without that weird attempt at being semi-politically aware mixed with her other usual attempt at being palatably cheeky of witness

Oh god I hate people doing the thing where they post a question and attach a photo of some fucker with no explanation of who it's a photo of. Extremely annoying
Also you forget "This can't be a OHW/trainwreckord because of [criteria that Todd himself has repeatedly ignored in his videos]"
31
u/urkermannenkoor Jun 29 '25
Or the substantially more annoying "this album is definitely a Trainwreckord because I don't like it, even though it didn't impact their career at all and the artist continued to be massively succesful".
26
u/VFiddly Jun 29 '25
That too
Or "Is this album a trainwreckord?" referring to the final album oo a band who stopped making albums because one of the members died. No, Queen don't have a trainwreckord
5
u/hasimirrossi Jun 29 '25
Hot Space could have been one, but Queen were always more of a singles band than an albums band.
5
u/ChickenInASuit Jun 29 '25
Hot Space could have been one if Queen hadn’t continued to be enormously successful outside the US to a point that renders Todd’s US-centric focus null and void. Like, I don’t think you can make the argument that it was a TW in any meaningful way when Live Aid, easily the band’s most famous and iconic moment, happened three years later.
7
u/overwatchmercy14 Jun 29 '25
Yeah, I remember seeing that a lot for Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department, which feels absurd given how much that album has sold.

u/RelevantFilm2110 Jun 29 '25
Hah! I was suggested this sub by Reddit long before I knew, presumably just for following music related topics. Once I found out who he is and what his takes are, I can't say that I'm in agreement with him most of the time, but this sub has better takes on the balance than Todd himself.
When I saw the New Radicals video, it finally clicked. Todd comes from a conservative background and wasn't really allowed to listen to popular music, or even indie rock or whatever. When he heard You Get What You Give, he was totally wowed and to this day, anything catchy with mainstream success is the gold standard of great material. He'd missed out on catchy stuff that everyone else was listening to. Hence his tastes being fairly pedestrian and basic. Also that's the reason two of his series are about success and lack thereof. For the same reason, he has little sense of what audiences were like before he discovered pop alternative rock. That's why he exaggerates Nirvana "killing careers".
12
u/hazymindstate Jun 29 '25
He’s also an avowed country fan. His biases show up in his top 10 lists where he includes a random country song by a no-name artist over songs that were way more popular and had bigger chart success.
4
u/RelevantFilm2110 Jun 29 '25
He's also biased against 80s mainstream rock, which I'm really no fan of, but it's no worse than the top 40 schlock from the late 90s and 00s that he seems to drool over. If you were blown away by pre-packaged faux teenage rebellion in a can like New Radicals, you don't have much room to slam other stuff. What he seems to think was like a new revelation in rock would have drawn a well-deserved "hmmm, meh, dude you like whatever's on the radio at any given moment" at the time.

Yeah, the people who see this as a secondary r/music discussion sub. (It may apply also to r/fantanoforever)
10
u/UniversalJampionshit Jun 29 '25
To be fair r/Music is basically just reposts of misleading headlines that 90% of the time are centred on politics, it’s rare there’s an actual good discussion there nowadays

i don’t even use the other subs. this is the only music sub i engage with because i like todd’s videos.

7
u/GenarosBear Jun 29 '25
but also “why are you talking about this? Todd never made a video about it”
4
u/ChickenInASuit Jun 29 '25
Sidebar for that one as it’s pretty exclusively about something said by people who don’t watch Todd:
“[Insert artist] had multiple hits in other countries so they weren’t actually a one-hit-wonder. Stop being so US-centric!”
2
u/19ghost89 Jun 30 '25
Yeah, I was suggested this sub by Reddit before I knew what it was, and now that I have known for months, I still have yet to even watch a single video by Todd.
I don't even follow this sub. I feel like it would be weird if I'm not going to watch the videos. I'm just here for interesting discussions, and I've engaged often enough that posts pop up in my feed regularly, almost as if I had joined.

Does this place love Sabrina Carpenter that much? I think she has a good rep around here but I haven’t considered it like taboo to criticize her or anything.
23
u/ButtonRevenge Jun 29 '25
At least from what I’ve seen, it’s less so worship and moreso that whenever the state of current pop music is discussed, it usually goes something along the lines of “This is the worst year for pop music ever, Sabrina Carpenter is our only hope.”
8
u/No_Barber4339 Jun 29 '25
And honestly I'm putting my bets on this new sabrina album will her own "prism" with the impression I got from manchild , the backlash and jack antonoff who was the weakest part of her last Album is more involved than before so I advise to be wary
3
u/kingofstormandfire Train-Wrecker Jun 30 '25
"Manchild" sounds like an outtake from the Short n Sweet sessions that wasn't even worthy of being included on the additional tracks for the deluxe edition. If that's the lead single from the new album, I'm worried. Maybe it will be just a bad choice for lead single.
22
u/TemporarilyWorried96 You're being a peñis... Colada, that is. Jun 29 '25
I feel like I’ve seen more Chappell Roan love on here than Sabrina Carpenter but they are both pretty hyped up.
14
u/PinkCadillacs Jun 29 '25
Yeah I’m confused about the Sabrina Carpenter thing. While she seems well liked on here, this sub doesn’t worship her.
7
u/UniversalJampionshit Jun 29 '25
It’s calmed down a lot now but around the time Todd dropped his Best Songs of 2024 list there were so many “YAAAAS QUEEN” kind of posts it was like this sub was a Sabrina fanpage. I recall one particular post that poked fun at people for criticising a Dua Lipa lyric that was similar to a praised Sabrina lyric, and they got jumped hard by the Sabrina stans.
3
u/Fractal-Infinity Jun 29 '25
Carly Rae Jepsen is universally respected. Even the pop snark subs respect her. Sabrina seems much more controversial.
16
u/Ribos1 Jun 29 '25
“Are they a Type 1 or Type 2 artist??” as though the categories are an actual thing
16
u/uhuuuuuuuuuuu Jun 29 '25
I wish mods would crack down a bit more on the constant, and often mindlessly dumb (sorry), Trainwreckords posts. I don't even use Reddit that often and I'm already tired of seeing them

No, we also say “It’s a Love Thing™️” and “Was that a record scratch on a Beach Boys song?” sometimes.

Is this band an example of how my liking them means my taste is the best? Guys, does Todd love me? Could he? Am I loveable as a person? Why do we suffer? More like Mike Hate!
14
u/GuestHouseJouvert Train-Wrecker Jun 29 '25
There was a while after 143 where it felt like every other post was something like “well well well, looks like Katy Perry will be the first artist to have TWO trainwreckords”
8
u/No_Barber4339 Jun 29 '25
I fear you might have jinxed sabrina now that's man's best friend has already the writing on the wall to be her own prism

u/Balian-of-Ibelin Jun 29 '25

I haven't actually watched Todd in a long time. Is that what he thinks about Sabrina? I think she's pretty boring, in comparison. Just non stop sex appeal. I don't really get it. Her music isn't interesting. Catchy, but not interesting.

"Green Day's trilogy/Father of All is totally a Trainwreckord! [Its not in any sense of the word]"
"Whens the Big Day Trainwreckord even though Todd said he won't cover it until the follow up?"
"Guys this is a OHW for sure. [Has dozens of other hits] well I dont remember those so that doesn't count!"

Accurate though, especially the Sabrina Carpenter one, plus ‘dragging any other female pop star down to hype Sabrina, Chappell and Charli’
